Notes: This imperialized version of their seasonal Chocolate Porter weighs in at 9% to the original's ~6.5%, and has some extra additions of Madagascar vanilla beans and oats. A pound of chocolate goes into every barrel, and there's also a bit of lactose added to fully develop that milk-chocolate character.

Part of the Rare Beer Club selection.
750 mL waxed cap bottle, poured into a tulip style glass.
Very dark brown color and off white head on the beer.
Sweet chocolate, vanilla, and lactose flavors.
I had it with my wife's birthday cake, great dessert beer.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into snifter.
A: Pours a fairly dark cola brown with a nice 2-3 inch dark tan/light mocha head with very good retention. Small amount of thick, creamy lacing. Very little light emerges at the edges with backlighting.
S: Dry sweet chocolate, caramel malt, vanilla, and cream (a la lactose). Hint of grain too...oats? And a whiff of fruit.
T: Wow...the smooth dark chocolate and vanilla beans leap to the forefront here. A nicely balanced combo. This is followed by caramel, dark dried fruit (raisin and fig), cream, toasted grains, and a hint of charred wood.
M: Velvety smooth and oh so sweet. Creamy feel (really enjoyed the lactose and oats impact). Alcohol is nearly imperceptible...extremely well hidden. Nicely lingers and matures on the palate too. Just a tinge of roasted malt porter notes...this seems to sit on the fence between stout and porter. The mouthfeel is definitely the highlight of this already solid brew.
D: This beer certainly delivers on what it promises. Wonderful chocolate and vanilla notes. The mouthfeel is phenomenal and I don't think I've had a beer that has hid 9% ABV as well. I'm nitpicking now, but I wish there was a bit more complexity on the secondary and tertiary levels. Still, a wonderfully crafted brew!
