River Horse Brewing Co. "Hippotizing IPA"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle without production codes or freshness dating
$1.83 @ Cherry Hill Liquor, Wine & Beer (Wegmans), Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Well it's got a nice head on it, I'll have to wait for it to settle, but it's also quite cloudy. It's a brownish amber and the head's off-white. It smells like a "real ale" with the yeast coming through amidst caramelish malt and citrusy hops. On to the flavor... similar as expected, but with much more hop flavor. I'm not sure why the hop aroma's so limited because the flavor's not. I'm finding notes of orange, berries, grapefruit, pine, earth, mango, and a little bit of lemon. They work well with the sweetish and grainy pale malt base, and a solid bitterness backs it, balancing the sweetness and bringing it to a mostly dry conclusion. Oddly the hops don't linger nearly as strong as you might expect given their contribution upfront. That's OK though, it's a unique ale. It's medium bodied and gently crisp. Worth trying.

10/20/16....pours rusty copper bronze. Citrussy malt nose. Light bodied, quick malt flavor that fades into a lemon tinged pepper bitter. Bright floral flavors. Subtle IPA.

-spiegelau ipa glass. bought and consumed release week.

A: Against lighting has that bright orange drink coloring and hue, with a heavy hand of unfilitered haziness. Dirty cream colored head of 0.5 inches is milky thick in consistency, and average on retention. Carbonation is light to moderate in density, and slow on rise. Multiple band lacing leaves a respectable coverage behind on the vessel.

S: Wet mangoes and fresh pineapple from the bottle, dried orange skin citrus that comes off much softer after the pour. Hoping for a bit more aromatic wise.

T: Tropical northeast style hopping with orange and pineapple glow, meets a west coast grassy-citrus semi-dry hopping on the finish for balance. Sharp citric-mango bite is forefront, has some mention of passion fruit and orange juice vibes thrown in. Very flavor forward with a deep toasted bready malt backing, that was dry with stalky grassy hops and lemony citrus. Citric-orange alcohol glow and warmth that lingers on quite a bit there-after.

M: Creamy malt, medium heavy body shows support with a low to mid range carbonation factor that gives this more of a heavy and relax feel on the tongue.

O: As advertised by the brewer, this is a hybrid of the recent juicy tropical northeast ipas with some traditional west coast flair. The mosaic hops bring a nice touch here but its the falconersflight blend that really brings the wealth of complexity and spectrum of hop flavors to this beer. Big blast of wet tropical fruit upfront is followed by a dry west coast citrus hop finish. Got this fresh on release week is very highly hopped with a favorable amount of alcohol that feels every bit its 7.5% which may hinder multiples, and is not as easy to drink as your more note-able Vermont northeast style ips, this one has bite and an attitude jersey style.

Typical Revved up IPA(Imperial maybe) look to it.

Smell to me is very nice and fruity. This is a local brewer for me technically and this is very fresh on the nose. I can smell some Tasmanian hops in the mix and I have recently acquired a taste for this hop flavor and try to seek it out when I see something with Southern Hemisphere strains of hops.

Taste pretty much like the nose and that kicks this beer up a notch or 2. I like what River Horse is doing right now and I think it's in the right direction for future success in brewing good beers.

Feels like I'm liking this one. Glad to hear this will be part of the regular offerings from this brewer.

No complaints at all on this new RH offering. I'm a big fan of their Hipp-O-Lantern Imperial Pumpkin Ale every fall for some time now. Because of the freshness factor advantage I would get on this beer I can see this becoming a new go-to IPA for me, that's pretty much 95% of what I prefer at any given time anyway. I like my IPA cheap and fresh. Giddy up!
