This is a very dark, black-ish beer, with a tan head. The coffee-like aroma is mixed with grain, distant smoke, and a bit of dark malt smells. For taste, this beer is drier than I expected, but still robust, with a firm bitterness and some grain and highly roasted malt flavors. It has a heavy body, with a very smooth, dense, and mouth-filling feel. All in all, this is a solid brew.

A - Nice full inch of mocha head beer is a deep dark black with mild carbonation bubbles
S - Light mocha and lactose in the nose. Smell is sweet.
T - Mild roast and milk sugar sweetness. Defiantly one of the better milk stouts I had.
M - Medium bodied good beer.

Overall one of the best beers I believe River Horse makes. If I ever order from Halftime Beverage again I will pick up a six pack. Great quality stout.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Duvel Belgian Tulip glass

Appearance: Dark brown, almost black in color. A semi-aggressive pour only yielded a small ¼’ tan head that quickly diminished to a thin ring. Syrupy style lacing, which was a combination of the thicker pour mixed with the few remaining bubbles in the head.

Smell: Sweet roasty malts grabbed my attention right away, followed by mild oats, coffee and chocolate. I really like the smell of this one, probably because it mixes two of my favorite style stouts in one, both oatmeal and milk stout. I don’t catch any booziness at all considering it’s a 6.7% ABV.

Taste: Wow, I think I found myself a new favorite, locally brewed, oatmeal milk stout. Roasted malts and oats shine through. The bittersweet chocolate and coffee bean flavors know how to keep in cadence with the malts and oats. The milk sugar sweetness does a balancing act with the mild bitterness present. I can’t wait until the next sip…

Mouthfeel: Creamy smoothness across the tongue combined with a medium body and moderate carbonation. Sweetness and mild bitterness battle it out at the finish. Great residual flavors are left behind on the palate.

Overall: A very well balanced oatmeal milk stout. I can easily see having a few in a sitting. Heck, I wish I had another one right now, but sadly I only bought a 6-pack and this was my last one. I hope I can make my way back to the local beer store to get one more six pack before this seasonal disappears until next year. River Horse clearly has a winner here. A perfectly done oatmeal milk stout brewed in NJ. What else can a beer lover ask for??

A pours very dark into the pint glass. The head is light brown and pretty big with lots of retention. No lacing is left above a ln opaque body. Looks like a nice stout.

S nice sweetness upfront with a light roast. Milk chocolate and dark malts takebcare of the majority of the scent.

T milk chocolate and light oat malts with a very subtle bitterness from the roast on the finish. Nice, easy to drink stout.

M very smooth with very little carhonation. The body feels slightly heavy and sticky.

O nice milk stout thats very easy to drink. Thanks Mat.

Poured into a nonic. Got a nice 2 finger dark tan head on a black body. Roasty malts and chocolate in the aroma. Tastes a bit like chocolate malt in beer form with a bit of tang. Nice bitter note in there, mixes nicely with the overall sweetness. Mouthfeel was medium with small amount of carbonation. Really enjoy this beer, and can't wait for my next glass.

A: Pours jet black with a finger high tan head. There is good head retention on the beer and moderate amounts of lacing on the glass.

S: Moderate aromas of dark roasted malts, oats, molasses, and chocolate.

T: Flavors of sweet oatmeal (like a cookie), chocolate, and cream. Nice complexity and balance to the flavor. Not as sweet as I expected and very little bitterness in the finish.

M: Medium bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Creamy and smooth.

O: Quite nice for an oatmeal & milk stout - a combination that I really enjoyed. Easy to drink and quite sessionable and a beer that was enjoyed by all of my guests at the Super Bowl party. Probably the best offering from this brewery that I have experienced.

great to see this style really taking off i saw two milk stouts in my area recently and just traded for one as well i am really intersted in this style so its good to be able to try many different samples

ok the aroma right off the bat is like molasses and burnt brown sugar then a little bit of roasted nuts int he end

taste was deep rich molasses almost like a soy sauce character in the very end but a real pleasant one! i actually drank this bottle super fast because it went down real smooth and was super enticing

my favorite element of all though was definitelyt he mouthfeel absolutely pure silk in there like a rich full bodied creaminess but at the same time a bit layered

the only thing holding it back was perhaps just a little bit too sweet almost savory like a dessert beer but maybe thats what it should be used for...

Jet black, silky in appearence with a nice cocoa head. Aroma of cocoa and grain. Nice flavor of chocolate with a very nice sweetness. Lingering roasted flavor. Faint vanilla hints. Nice soft and somewhat silky mouthfeel. A nice beer all in-one of the better offerings I have had from River Horse.

Appearance: 1/3 inch head, opaque, dark brown in color, moderate carbonation

Smell: big oats, light roasted malt, chocolate

Taste: big sweet oat and chocolate start with cream

Mouthfeel: medium body, sweet and malty, medium carbonation

Overall: A very solid oatmeal stout. May be River Horse’s best. I could certainly sip on a six pack on a cold winter’s day.

S - chocolate, malty, a bit of oak

T - instant smokey taste, followed by a sweet chocolatey shock

M - very smooth flowing with a crisp dry finish

O - this is a great anytime beer and am hoping to see in bottles soon. was lucky enough to get a growler filled at joe canal's in woodbridge thanks to my brother.

I really like this stout! The aromas here are amazing, smells almost like a latte with roasted coffee and sweet mixed with some oatmeal.

The tastes follow the nose but with less sweetness. Roasted chocolate malts and coffee, a very small bit of hop bitterness, but creamy and smooth for sure. The mouthfeel is great here too, pretty creamy, sweet oat flavor is left on the tongue as a good after taste.

Overall the drinkability is excellent, pretty filling though and the roasty character might overpower the sweets after a while, another great brew from River Horse!

a: pours out a dark brown and settles in a pitch black.can see tiny bubbles rising up along the glass. half finger of mocha colored head settled to a spotty sea foam cap with patchy lacing.

s: roasted coffee, lactose, chocolate, toffee and oatmeal.

t: lactose at first, then turning to the roasted coffee and chocolate, very little oat on the backend.

m: med-heavy body, creamy and slick, bitter coffee finish.

o: not much oatmeal detectable in this one. still prettty good for a milk stout. would recommend to others.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle with no freshness date into a tulip.

A: Pitch black with a thin tan head that dissipates rather quickly.

S: Slight sweet cream smells with light milk and a, surprisingly, bitter coffee roast smell. This smells really inviting.

T: Very nice flavor here, really mellow but inviting. Sweet cream up front with a nice bitter coffee finish. I'm enjoying this very much!

M: The body is medium with some weight to it, like a light creamer. There's light carbonation, but enough to leave a little tingle.

O: I'm surprised I'm liking this as much as I am. There's not much going on, but there's a great balance of creamer sweetness with a coffee bitter finish. The value is great at $9 a 6 pack and it's very drinkable.

Poured into a pint glass from a 12oz. bottle.

A: Dark brown/black with tan head, only a cm or so with little bits of lacing.

S: dark roasted malts, with scents of sweet milk chocolate, lactose, oats, and the slightest hint of coffee.

T: The flavor starts smooth, sweet, and chocolatey. Hops start to kick in and add some bitterness to the flavors, giving it more of a dark chocolate taste. There is a lingering milk sugar sweetness from the lactose in the finish.

M/O: Wow, this is one smooth beer. Medium-full bodied with mild carbonation, and a full on silk mouthfeel. When you see those lame commercials about over-priced chocolate or yogurt or whatever and they keep saying "smooth, rich decadence" ooolala. Well.... River Horse Oatmeal Milk Stout is like that.

Pours a very murky brown with a coffee colored head. Pungent nose. Cream and chocolate on the nose. Definitely smells like sweet sweet dessert. Unfortunately there's also an underlying sourness, like someone poured milk in my beer, but I guess that's the point.

Chewy mouthfeel with lots of chocolate and lactose like flavors. Kind of like a carbonated chocolate milk with some charcoal notes. Roasts sweet malts up front with a very well balanced minty hop presence. The hops are subtle but do their job spectacularly.

Lacing is spectacular.

Very rich and creamy, not sure how many I could drink in succession but it is quite tasty.

Pours a billowy mocha head and a very dark body both brown & black. Has a small amount of lacing sticking to the sides of the glass.

Very strong hop aromas mix with a touch of roasted malts. Lactose sugary sweetness, light cocoa notes, and a touch of coffee.

The hops are adding a huge amount of bitterness. The bitterness fades away but hints of it linger from the middle into the aftertaste. Bitter dark chocolate and powdered cocoa flavors mix well with the way the oatmeal smooths out this beer. A bit thin in the finish, could use a bit more body.

RH Oatmeal Milk Stout does many things well, but also misses on quite a few others. The big hop aroma/flavor are quite nice, but don't actually lend much to the taste but bitterness. Not a whole lot of flavor and finishes thin, but the mouthfeel is actually quite enjoyable.

This brew was labeled as a brewer's reserve when I had it back in 2010. The beer poured out as a nice deep black color with a nice tan/brown colored head on it. The smell of the beer was roasted, even a little chocolaty. The taste of the beer had a pretty good sweetness to it. The roasted malts were nice and left a sweet aftertaste. The mouthfeel of the beer was a little on the thin side to me, I wasn't too impressed there. Overall this beer was decent, I don't see why it was a "brewer's reserve" but if they want to say that I guess they can.

A - Poured into a pint glass, this is poured black with a creme colored foam that is thick at first and settles to a thin line. Impressive lacing.

S - Scent of cocoa is noticeable early. Has a significant malt smell.

T - Sweet and chocolatey. The chocolate flavor is impressive. Finish has a sweet candy taste.

M - Very drinkable, feels ligther than it is. Consistency isn't watery.

O - Surprised how much I liked this. Would have this again, at least on tap.

Poured a 12oz bottle into a Delirium Tremens snifter. Couldn't find a date on the bottle.

Pours a jet black, with a half-finger, chocolate colored head. The head floats for a good while on top of the beer and leaves great lacing on the sides of the glass. Wow....what a great looking beer. Smells of sweet chocolate, a small hint of coffee, and roasted malts. Tastes of dark chocolate with a mild hop profile. Very good carbonation, but the beer seems a bit thin. Overall a very good beer. Glad I had a chance to try it.

The pour was decent, dark brown in color with a small, very quick head of light tan that left no lacing and hardly anything on top. This was worrisome for me at first as I was afraid it may have been a bit flat, but it was just the look that appeared a bit off. Aroma of deep roasted malts, light smoke and nice chocolate notes start to come through right away. Smooth, even and as it warm relatively unchanged. Light vanilla in here now as I take the first sip. A bit slick, I was expecting a bit fuller feel to it, but the taste still came across nicely. Smokey with nice notes of peat and burnt sugar mixing with a light chocolate and creamy lactose flavor. Nicely done. Each sip seem to get more and more smokey, which was a nice touch and the finish was just dry enough and left just enough sweetness on the tongue to leave me very pleased.

A: Pours a near pitch black with a creamy mocha colored head. The head dissipates most of the way leaving a thin mocha ring and coating that hangs around for the duration.

S: The smell is not overwhelming, but consists primarily of chocolate, a hint of coffee, and grains.

T: Dark, bitter chocolate dominates at first balanced by a smooth sweetness. Soon most of the sweet feel dissipates leaving dark chocolate and eventually a bitter finish where the hops become noticeable.

M: This beer is low in carbonation making for a very smooth and creamy medium bodied feel.

D: To me this is about as drinkable as they come. The flavors do not get old and the lack of carbonation makes it easy to drink. My favorite River Horse beer and one of my favorites all around.

A: The beer is nearly jet black in color (only some traces of amber were noticeable at the bottom of the glass when it is held up to the light. It poured into a pint glass with a thin creamy tan head that faded away but left wispy patterns of bubbles floating on the surface.
S: The smell is slightly sweet and has aromas of chocolate and coffee with hints of roasted malts.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and also has some flavors of milk chocolate. There are some hints of bitterness in the finish.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied, somewhat smooth and slightly creamy on the palate with a light to moderate amount of carbonation.
D: I had no problem drinking this and could have easily have a few of these in one night.
