Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown, nearly black color with a two finger head of tan colored foam. The head has a decent level of retention, fading to leave only a trace of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the brew is rather strong of an oatmeal and roasted malt smell, mixed with some vanilla and sweet crème sweetness. There are some other aromas of chocolate and a little bit of a burnt smell, leaving one with a nice roasty and sweet smell overall.

Taste – The taste begins with a rather sweet and roasty flavor with a whole lot of vanilla and caramel sweetness matched by some light chocolate and a whole lot of roast. Right from the start there is also a very hearty oatmeal flavor which creates a fantastic base taste for the brew. As the taste advances a more chocolate and some crème come to the tongue, with these, in the end, leaving one with a nice oaty and slightly roasty and sweet flavor to linger on the on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thicker and chewier side with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. For the style and the nice sweet oatmeal and roasty tastes of the beer, the feel is fantastic, creating one nice and thick mouth coating feel that baths the tongue in all the great flavors of the brew.

Overall- This is a quite nice oatmeal stout. Sweet, but not overly sweet. Dark, but not overly dark or roasty like. Mixed with a whole lot of sweet oatmeal, it makes for one delicious brew.

A: Pours a foggy, creamy looking deep brown. In the glass it's a dark brown, like melted tootsie rolls. No rea retainable head. Just a thin khaki ring.

S: Mild sweetness. Chocolate. Nothing particularly unique, but smells very inviting. Straight foreward, with no surprises.

T: Chocolate. an almost cocoa powder like character. Picking up some roastiness. Faintly bitter to finish. Not an aggressively flavored beer, but definitely delivers more than anticipated based on the nose.

F: Medium. Smooth. The oats could have added more.

O: An enjoyable enough milk stout to be happy to try. River Horse didn't do the style wrong. Pick it up if available in your locale.

12 oz bottle.
This is not your traditional milk stout.
It's not very sweet, it has a relatively rich flavor, and there's more chocolate and coffee.
Drinks like a higher gravity beer.

One of my favorite oatmeal stouts. Smooth, creamy, and just enough toasted malt goodness...

Poured into a pint glass.

Look: Very dark brown, near black, with around a finger of brown head. Tidbits of floaty yeast.

Smell: LOTS of toasted malt and some chocolate. Probably my favorite thing about the beer.

Flavor: Malty, somewhat astringent aftertaste, and bit chocolatey. Spots of warming alcohol. Not bad.

Feel: A bit on the light side for this type of beer, though still a little chewy. So-so.

I really love the smell of this beer... reminds me of toasted nuts... though the flavor leaves a little something to be desired. Still something I'd buy again.
