On-tap at Pacific Standard, Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is almost jet black in color. It poured with a thin tan head that died down and left a small ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: There are light to moderately strong aromas of chocolate in the nose along with some hints of cream.
T: The overall taste is quite chocolaty and these flavors somewhat resemble something you would put on an ice cream sundae (like Hershey’s syrup). No bitterness is perceptible and no other flavors (like roasted malts) are noticeable.
M: It feels a bit shy of medium-bodied and relatively smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very easy to drink, goes down easy and is quite sessionable. I would have no problem drinking a few of these in one sitting.

First had: on tap at Broad Axe Tavern, Ambler, PA

Damn tasty porter right here. Kind of reminiscent of last year's batch of Voodoo Cowbell. Dark brown-black pour into a chalice, moderate tan head that sank to a ringlet and left a bit of lacing on the glass. No ABV listed. Aroma of roasty malts, cocoa and chocolate...I pretty much knew this was going to be a good one from the scent alone. Taste of creamy chocolate milk, with moderate roastiness that is slightly dominated by sweetness; a bit of earthy hops in the finish. This was definitely served too cold, so I let it warm up a bit for the flavors and body to come out more. Smooth mouthfeel, not quite full-bodied--definitely a porter and not a stout--very solid and drinkable overall. Quite a surprise from River Horse, I must say. They should definitely continue making this one, and offer it on nitro.

On tap.

A - Dark brown pour with a layer of light tan creamy foam.

S - Chocolate fudge aroma dominates the nose with some cocoa and vanilla.

T - Roasty chocolate, fudge brownies, light chocolate char, vanilla, and ends with a lingering bittersweet chocolate fudge that errs more towards the sweet side.

M - Full body, velvety, sugary and sticky on the lips.

O - This is an exceptional Chocolate Porter with a lot of flavor. Recommended.

L: Deep black with red iridescence and a nice khaki head.
S: The smell on this one is awesome. Tons of fudge and dark chocolate; a tiny bit of vanilla.
T: Lots of chocolate, but a different type than in the nose...more of a baker's chocolate. Roasted malts. Bitter, but still somewhat sweet.
F: Medium body and carbonation. Meh.

O: The nose on this one is the star of the show. A little more viscosity would have made this one a standout, but I would happily purchase again.

5/2...pours dark black, very thin stretched layer of off-white/brown foam. Roasted coffee bitter nose. Subtle chocolate nose underneath. Chocolate filled flavor with a light grit and bitter back. Smooth, creamy, clean. Some milky taste mixed in. Mostly chocolate. Reminiscent of Sam Smith;s chocolate.

Was really surprised at how good this was. Smooth feel, light body, and plenty of chocolate taste. Could easily have a few of these. Will keep this on my radar.

12 oz bottle poured into a shaker pint.

Appearance
Mahongany with a 1/2 finger of tan head that dissipates quickly. Mucky looking yeast sediment is suspended throughout.

Nose
Semi-sweet chocolate, roasted barley, birch beer, licorice, and vanilla.

Taste
Roasted barley, cola, and birch beer. Lighter notes of black licorice and earthy hop flavors. Sprinkles of dusted cocoa.

Mouthfeel
Medium bodied, crisp, and silky with a light bitterness.

Overall
It's easy drinking with a fair amount of chocolate flavor, but overall the flavor profile is pretty restrained.

Had this on tap last night at the Cloverleaf up in Caldwell. Almost felt like a Stout because of how smooth it was, as the roasted, burnt notes really weren't able to be felt. This still had enough body to it that it didn't feel light and reminded me of Guinness with a bit more alcohol and sweetness to it. For this time of the year, this was a good precursor to Saint Patrick's Day!

Nice pour to this with a dark brown hue, tan head, and a good amount of lacing on the back of my pint glass after my first few sips. Bitter and burnt chocolate in the nose, which was reinforced with a somewhat burnt tone once I took a sip of this. Smooth and creamy (for a Porter), the vanilla came through in the taste and assisted in the relative easy and creaminess of the mouthfeel. Nice carbonation to this as none of the flavors lingered for long and everything was scrubbed away in a timely manner after each sip went down.

There was alcohol here but I didn't taste it and I could only feel a hint of it once I made my way through my pint. Even though I had this on tap, I would have loved to have this with a nitro pour. While certainly a Porter, this could have easily been mistaken for a Cream Stout, a Dry Irish Stout, or even chocolate milk with something else mixed in for good measure. Certainly one of the better offerings from River Horse and perfect for another night where the snow just won't stop falling...

A: dark brown, but with ruby highlights clearly visible; 2 finger medium tan head that receded to a thick cap; very nice, thick lacing;

S: like an old fashioned chocolate malt milk shake;

T: follows the nose, with the addition of roasted grains; low to moderate bitterness on the finish;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation;

O: exactly as advertised; I would have liked a little more bitterness;
