Caveau Montpensier: I always translated the name of this beer as the Cave on Montpensier. It is built into the basement of the buildings across the street from the Palais Royale, not far from Comedie Francais. The owner/barkeep told me that the space had previously been used as a stable for the palace across the street. The place has low barrel vaulted ceilings, lots of British beer mirrors, and a nice selection of beers, including well poured Guinness and other ales from the UK and Ireland.

We noticed this place because of the Guinness sign, and walked in the late afternoon asking (in terrible French) whether they were open. The barkeep (and later we learned he is the owner) leaned over and said in a broad Boston accent: “Yeah, we’re open.” It turns out the owner is an ex-pat from Boston. We could stay only a short time that afternoon, and came back that evening. The place was packed with locals, a few Brits and a few Americans. The owner (of course) spoke excellent English, and everyone in this pub was extremely friendly. Late at night, my wife and I split a final pint. The owner came over, very concerned that we had run out of money, as Paris was “very expensive.” We told him that we were not broke, just drunk. He asked us to stay; we did, and had a great time. We went back almost every night, on almost every one of our trips to Paris.

Great place to stop for a pint in Paris. Highly recommended.
