12 oz. bottle poured into a tumbler style pint glass.

Look- One finger of dense, off white, lasting head above a murky amber body.
Smell- Not much going on, light yeast with a hint of floral hop aroma.
Taste- Slightly sweet bready malt with moderate hop bitterness and some faint citrus notes trying to come through. Finishes with a weak bitter aftertaste.
Feel- Moderate to high carbonation with a medium body that is a little creamy.
Overall- OK, not really my style but I'm not holding that against it.

Pretty poorly done IPL. I typically really enjoy this style. But this beer isnt on. It pours a grainy mid tone brown. Smells kind of hoppy and nice. The taste of hop is unpleasantly accompanied by malty grass chew flavor. Finishes with a weak wash. Not very good.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #89 (June 2014):

Clean, Hop-forward, Sessionable

Hazed out golden hue with two fingers of lasting head on top. Big floral, grassy, spicy, and light citric hop nose ... clean with a kiss of grain and alcohol as well. Semi-chewy medium body, bread crust, dried grass and a little biscuity. Citric tone throughout, spicy resin and blonde tobacco from the hops. Beers like this make us want to pick IPLs over IPAs ... splitting hairs perhaps but this beer was damn tasty.

12 oz. bottle poured into pilsener
(10/16/14 bottled on date)
courtesy of @TongoRad through NBS BIF

L: murky/cloudy orange with wisps of black residue floating throughout column; thick, lasting beige head of foam about 1.5 inches tall and super sticky at top; with a little bit of lacing and a chunky skin/collar, this thing would score at least a 4.25 to 5 by a craft-beer scale, but the cloudiness ranks it about a 2 by the purity-law German lager scale ... so I'm splitting a difference and going with my gut (4)

S: caramel/mango sweet at first, but a fantastic grassy note starts peeking through; OK, suddenly that caramel/mango-barleywinesque sweetness is gone completely, and I'm getting a full-on bready malt aroma with a pinch of grassy hops -- like a true Old World pils. crazy conversion, but there's no denying that pilsner mark, including the house paint smell that some super bready-malt pils can get. sour grain

T: very nice citrus/orange flavor mixed with a hint of grass; much more grass and bitter hop flavor than in the nose; almost has a lemony/grassy/dry sour grape bitterness like a Belgian IPA or super-hopped saison -- like a fruity-bitter thing ... very interesting; starting to taste the bready malt, and it's still very bitter but sweet from the malt

F: very nice all-around ... doesn't show a ton of carbonation left over after a pretty strong pour, but it's still good

O: interesting take on the lager, and a brew that really changes a bit as it warms up and your palate adjusts. at times it's like a well-hopped saison/Belgian IPA hybrid (like Prairie Hop), then suddenly it gets real German-pilsnery on you ... and while it starts off throwing out a very American DIPA/barleywine caramel sweet aroma, that disappears almost immediately and gets replaced by notes I much prefer -- grass, bread malt, citrus notes of orange and lemon and even a slight fruitiness that's almost strawberry/rasberry like, maybe grapes or sour grapes but so subtle it's hard to call. good brew -- and it's nice to get a little of that bread malt/grass mix, a tribute to the roots from which a beer like this one sprung.

big thanks to @TongoRad for this and all the Straub lagers I'll be getting to soon.
