Went here on a trip to San Francisco. We ended our day long trek through the beautiful Golden Gate Park with a beer and dinner at the Beach Chalet.

The restaurant is upstairs, which provides a great view of the beach and surrounding area. At the time we went, the sun was streaking in the windows and the glare was bad, but we still enjoyed the view.

Our server was very nice and friendly. We asked her about the area to the north (Cliff House and the Sutro Bath ruins) and she recommended we check it out, which we did (pretty cool area and it's not a bad hike along the beach).

The beer and food were excellent, albeit a little pricey. But we were very hungry/thirsty from our day at the Park, so we didn't mind paying a little more for atmosphere and convenience, plus it's San Francisco - not sure that a cheap meal exists for wandering tourists.

Will definitely try to go back someday.

This review is for Park Chalet, the restaurant that faces the ocean and sits above Beach Chalet. Same beers on tap, and pretty much the same menu. You pay for the view, not necessarily the quality of food. Take that as you will.

We stopped in for lunch at Beach Chalet as a half-way point for our trip through Golden Gate Park. The restaurant is upstairs and has a great view of the Pacific Ocean.

The restaurant lunch crowd we saw was a mix of locals, families, and obvious tourists. To me, it seemed more came for the food or view, not the beer, but it was lunch time.

They do a flight of all their beers that are currently on tap (in this case, there was 8), but they also sell them by the pint. Most were average standard staples, a few surprises, but nothing crazy here.

The service was good, attentive, happy to answer questions about the beer or menu.

I would categorize the selection as upscale Lunch options. I wouldn't say it is limited, you can certainly find something, but it is not an expansive menu by any stretch. I had the Cobb Salad and it was a good Cobb Salad, but a bit pricey.

Overall, this is a cool stop in San Francisco and a nice way to tie together a visit to Golden Gate Park.

This is a pretty good place that gets the most points for the place and location itself. It's in an historic 1920s building at the western end of Golden Gate Park, with the front looking out at the ocean, with nice views form the windows all along the front, and the back, operated as a separate restaurant but part of the same business, facing the park. The building has beautiful frescos and other details from the period and has been nicely restored after having been derelict for some years. The main negative of the building is that the back part, the Park Chalet, although attractive in a conservatory-like setting, is hot and overly bright in sunny, warm weather. However, since this is San Francisco, and it's on Ocean Beach, warm, sunny days are not all that frequent. In the summer, especially, one can often bet on it being cool and foggy.

The beers are of a very limited range, not widely varied, and not imaginitive. However, the ones I've had at the place itself are very good, well-rounded, and enjoyable.

Food is pretty good, but not great, and rather pricey for what you get.

Service is adequate.

One of the last places I hit on my recent San Fran trip, this was more of a nostalgia trip than most. In 1998, an old ex and I sat in this restaurant, and with the waves rolling in dramatically behind her, she and I parted ways, never to see each other again. It was called something else back then and it had beer that was about average.

Service at this current incarnation was absolutely terrible. We hit the patio bar, and nobody behind it seemed familiar with the concept of multi-tasking. After about fifteen minutes we finally got our beers. I understand how things can get at a bar, but with this location, I can hardly believe that they hadn’t seen this size of a crowd before. I guess they’re relying on their location in this regard.

Due to ghosts and a gorgeous day, we refrained from staying inside and opted to drink out on the back lawn. A gorgeous, warm San Fran Saturday had people everywhere, drinking, eating, or playing with their kids/dogs. We leaned against the trees at the edge of the park woods, talked, and felt really happy about our decision to stop here, even with the unreasonable wait at the bar. I have to say that I really enjoyed the Fleishhacker Stout that I got, a fantastic, flavorful beer that I would have gotten again if we’d had the patience to deal with the wait at the bar. Next time I get here I’ll plan for the wait.

Beach Chalet is worth visiting for one reason alone, the location (across the street from Ocean Beach, and elevated for even better views) and the incredible views from the restaurant and to a lesser extent, the bar area. There is also a great outdoor seating area with a little lawn that adjoins Golden Gate Park. Fantastic location that is really tough to beat.

Unfortunately, the quality of the beer is a notch below good, and closer to average. A few beers can be tasty, but overall, not something to seek out for its high quality. The IPA is worth drinking and you could do a lot worse than sitting at the bar and turning your head to see an amazing view of the beach and the ocean while drinking a Beach Chalet Presidio IPA.

This place is unique in that the location, views, and ability to walk out the door and be on the beach kind of dominate the reasons to visit. The quality of the beer really does take a back seat when going here, and for once, in my visits to brewpubs over the years, the quality doesn't really matter when placed in this context.

Vibe is nice, tourists and locals, and people generally seem to be having a good time. Very much worth visiting for all the vibe/atmosphere reasons mentioned above. Definitely check out the Park Chalet, back patio area as well and certainly walk over to the beach and/or Golden Gate Park. One of the better brewpub locations I've been to in California, or anywhere for that matter. If they stepped up the quality of the beer a few notches, this place would truly be world class.

I went to this brewery and restaurant for lunch today with my family. The parking was horrible because everybody was parking everywhere probably because it was near the beach. The building is a very nice historic building from the 20's and the brewery and restaurant is upstairs. I tried a sampler of beers and they were all very good. I ordered an IPA as well and the chalet burger which was very good. The lemonade drinks that my sister, brother in law and dad got were very fancy looking which was cool. They give out frre cards which have their selection of beers on it and talk about the brewery process which was really cool. Very good food and good service. I will definitely go back.

Atmosphere: This was perfect, other than the fact it was a little upscale. its located on the upstairs of this building that has huge windows and over looks the beach. its simply beautiful. the inside is modeled to look very old world, i loved it.

Service: unless you're at the bar, you're likely to be waited on by a server. though they may not be completely knowledgeable about the beer, they still will know the small facts, and will also be very friendly.

Selection/Quality: obviously, the only beer there are the ones brewed on premises. they have a decent mix of your average beer styles, as well as one cask fed ale. the beers won't amaze you, but its always fun to drink something fresh from a brewery.

I'd recommend getting a lunch here while trying a few good beers.

Atmosphere - This is a nice place with a wall of windows that over look the ocean for a great view while eating. The restaurant is on the second floor as you get up the stairs the bar is to your right and the seating is to the left.

Quality/Selection - During my visit they had eight house beers on tap tat ranged from a Light Lager to a Stout and ran from average to good.

Service - During my visit the service was pretty average the waitress was friendly and brought us our food in a timely manner.

Food - The wife and I stopped by for dinner and I ordered the BBQ pork sandwich it was ok despite not having much BBQ flavor to it at all. The wife enjoyed her dinner as well.

Overall the this is a nice place to come to for some good food and a beer.

Beach Chalet is all about the location. You need to know that going in. On the second floor there are large windows that look out on Ocean Beach. It's a beautiful view. Beach Chalet is one of the only restaurants/bars in that area, so chances are if you're hungry or looking for a beer and you're at Ocean Beach, this is where you're going.
The beer is your average brewpub fare. Nothing special. Runs the gamut from generic to blah. The Riptide Red is probably their best beer. Food is decent, but kind of expensive. Stick to sandwiches and appetizers and you'll be okay.
Barstaff/waiters are friendly and helpful.
If you're a Bay Area beer completist, come in and try a sampler. Otherwise, you don't need to go out of your way.
