750 ml bottle purchased at Trader Joe's (!) PDX, $5.99, shared with buddy 11.29.10.

3/4 finger white head, very quick dissipation, with fairly good lacing. Clear orangish-yellow body, multiple streams of carbonation. Nose has the typical tripel profile, big on the curacao orange peel but the coriander is a bit subsumed, a wee bit of floral hops on the back end. Taste mirrors the nose, this is on the sweet side for style. Mouthfeel is a bit on the heavy side of medium, but surprisingly the finish wasn't very dry. Drinkability is ok, but there are too many other good tripels out there, I'd rather pony up the overage and have a Westmalle.

Tripel enriched with gruit. 33 cl. bottle, bb 12 may 2012.

Dark golden colour, nice head.
Fresh fruity smell, and also a lot of the expected gardensmell, Foliage and floral too.
Taste doesn't deliver as well as the smell: the balance between bitterness and sweet is ok, but the real flavours are gone very quickly.

Overall it's a reasonable ale: balanced, with both hops and other spices it's interesting for sure.

Poured from a bottle into a Leffe chalice.

Pours a murky medium straw with a decent head that recedes and laces minimally.

Aroma is light grain, candy sugar and light citrus and tropical fruits. Yeast is fruity and slightly dusty or funky, but not prominent.

Flavor is pale malt sweetness with a bit of a pineapple rider. Candy sugar takes the front and is interrupted by phenolic alcohol. Finishes boozey and sweet.

Mouthfeel is medium with harsh bubbled carbonation. Finishes sticky on the lips. Carbonation is quite harsh and active.

Overall a decent tripel, but not something I would go out of my way for.

750 ml cage-corked bottle, poured into a glass chalice.

Pours golden with a thin white head that doesn't retain well, soon becoming a small slowly vanishing patch. Lacing doesn't stick. I was hoping that subsequent pours would produce a better head and some lacing, but to little avail.

The smell is herbal, somewhat dusty, with orange peel and some grainy aroma.

The taste is of sweet graininess. Orange peel and slight banana give some fruitiness, especially as it progresses. It began chilled, and warming to room temperature helped a bit, but still was hardly worth the wait, progressing only to mediocre, in my opinion. An herbal touch balances it enough to give a semi-sweet finish.

Light bodied with carbonation that is more sharp, even towards harsh, than effervescent. Alcohol is well-covered.

Not the greatest example of the style, by any means. It only hints at the style, and has a general blandness to it... That's not to say it's "bad", certainly not "offensive", but there are too many great brews of this style coming out of Belgium to have this one again (unless you really want something of the style and it's the only one you can find, I suppose). The grainy maltiness just dominates too much (and even that is mild-ish), and is just lacking in general compared to other examples.

Pours a clear dark honey color with a small white head. Minimal lacing is left on the glass.

Sweet honey and graham cracker are the main aromas.

Somewhat fruity, perhaps pear, and spicy tasting, with cloves in there as well. A sweet finish with only the slightest hint of alcohol.

Mouthfeel was a bit dry, with a slightly thin body. There was moderate carbonation.

Tripels are one of my favorite styles, yet this beer was only average at best in it's class. Nothing offensive about it, but there are far better examples out there.

750ml corked, caged, and foiled bottle. Brewed by Palm.

Pours a nice golden color, a bit deeper than a German pils with a large, billowing bright white head. No lacing.

Smell is average for a tripel, it is nice and fruity and yeasty but it seems a bit too filtered and nice. There are hints of the breadlike malts as well.

It again, tastes like an average tripel, nice spiciness, the hops are very noticeable and citrusy, and the malt is a nice backing, not bad. There is some nice bitterness here.

It is too carbonated though, the mouthfeel is sharp and biting.

It isn't too bad of a brew, sort of middle of the road for tripels.

(Beer review # 1000... whoo hoo!)

A - Clear bright orange-honey with a three finger white head that's not as tight as it could be, but is very pretty despite it's loose bubbles. Big sheets of lace wash down the side of the big globe snifter after a swirl, and head retention is pretty good.

S - Green apple skin, sliced mangos and peaches, honeycomb breakfast cereal, and dry champagne. White grape juice (like that non-alcoholic champagne or "sparkling grape juice" you can buy for kids to toast with on New Years Eve). Green and leafy with a big time green grape character, some more complex herbal and perfumed notes come out with additional sniffing. Awesome complexity. This is very lively and refreshing to my nose.

T - Sweeter and darker than the lively and "spritzy" nose would suggest, this has an almond, honey, molasses, and sweet butter base with overlying hints of exotic flowers (Hawaiian Islands come to mind), bitter herbs and greens, and something in the background that almost reminds me of Capri Sun in the little foil pouch. This one has more than a hint of FUNK to it... might there be a little brettanomyces in the mix? The lingering aftertaste is super-stinky-cheese-funky and keeps me coming back for another sip.

M - Medium bodied ad firm. This is a wiry and taught brew that isn't so much muscular as it is ripped (less Arnold Schwarzeneger and more Bruce Lee). Finishes with an astringent "bitter greens" note that is very much like bitter arugula in a nice salad.

D - This is a very, very unique and interesting brew and I'm glad that I saved something odd and special for my 1000th review, but I can't help feel that this one would have been damn near perfect if they used hops instead of the ancient Gruut / herbal stuff they used in this one. I like the historical and educational "taste back in time" but as far as beer goes, there is a reason that hops have replaced other herbs as a preservative/bittering agent... they just plain taste better. All in all, this one is definitely something worth seeking out for the experience, but I've had more drinkable and more well-rounded tripels.

Tasted at a local Belgian beer tasting, 3 oz pour into a wine glass from the corked bottle.

Pours a light golden yellow color with modest white foam. Strong classic belgian smell. Taste is quite malty, but sweeter - can definitely draw out the candi sugar used in these types of brews. There's a nice alcohol heat that comes at the finish.

Overall a strong Tripel. Tasty, and easy to drink and enjoy. look forward to trying more than a few ounces.

This wasn't the big spice bomb that I usually associate with the tripel style, which made it unique and a touch novel. This beer is far maltier than any other tripels, and still has enough spice to keep things interesting. A little different than my previous experiences with tripels, but still good.

Appearance was a golden color with a pretty minor amount of head for a tripel. Aroma was very faintly spicey - clove and all-spice. Flavor was a bit puckery and full of fruity overtones, with a sweet spice finish. Booze is evident in the flavor, but not unpleasant. Mouthfeel was dry and clean. Pretty good, and recommendable.

I had this on-tap at the BXL Belgian cafe in midtown Manhattan.

Out of a 750ml corked, caged, and foiled bottle. Pours a golden orange color with a rather small white head that dissipated into an uneven ring. The aroma is sweet and fruity. Floral scents mix with honey and clove/pepper spice. Some light tropical fruit as well. The taste is a bit different from the aroma, has a much earthy aroma, which is most likely from the gruut. The flavor is of a pale malt, hint of lemon, with a herbal bitterness and floral/honey sweetness. Doesn't quite taste like your traditional tripel though it is pleasant. The feel is light to moderate with fizzy carbonation; finishes both sweet and bitter. A unique tripel, sweet yet bitter, herbal and floral. The sweetness seems out of place every once in a while. Definitely worth a try. Some of the flavors might get cloying.

Appearance: Pours a clear light orange color with a medium sized white head. Lots of carbonation can be seen cominf from the bottom of the glass.

Smell: Smell is light with apples, apricots, and cloves. I also get a bit of wheat and malt in there too. Very slight alcohol smell.

Taste: Nice and sweet. Apples, honey, oranges, and grain Peppery with a slight hop bitterness. You can taste the hops more in the after taste.

Mouthfeel/drinkability: Highly carbonated and light bodied. Very good taste. It opens up a bit more as it warms.

Got this at the bottle shop down the road.

From a bottle into a chalice.

APPEARANCE: Big medium-thin rocky white head with good retention. Carrot orange color with lower end carbonation. Head fades to a good film cap. A good film remains but leaves minimal lacing.

SMELL: Grainy toasted malt and a touch of wheat as well. Sweet apples and maybe some apricot. Some coriander and clove spices, with a touch of mango in there too. Decent strength as well.

TASTE: Grainy again. Toasted barley malt along side some wheat malt too. Sweet apples and pears with touches of pure honey. Spicy near the finish, coriander and clove, as well as some spicy alcohol. Stronger and lingering aftertaste is sweet, spicy and alcoholic, with enough bitterness to balance everything out. Quite enjoyable indeed.

PALATE: Medium body and lighter on the palate. Higher carbonation and slightly airy. Goes down smooth but bites at the end reminding you of the ABV. Finishes crisp on the palate.

OVERALL: Very solid tripel. Though the palate is a little too average, this one is enjoyable and drinkable as well. I'd definitely have several of these if I were in the mood for a few triples. This one is pretty readily available around here, which is either a good or bad thing. A bit of an unsung hero perhaps. This one blows their dubbel out of the water.

A solid pour into my 25cl tulip glass produces a three finger thick, light tan colored head that leaves a nice amount of lace on the sides of the glass. The beer is a rich gold hue that has a touch of copper to it. When held up to the light the beer shows an absolutely brilliantly clear, bright, rich gold color. The aroma is quite fruit focused with notes of ripe pear, Macintosh apple and perhaps some fruit white grape notes. A touch of grassy grain character comes through after things settle down, but this remains a fairly straight forward smelling Tripel.

The beer is sweet tasting, though not cloying as there is some peppery carbonation, a touch of hop bitterness and some higher alcohol spiciness that helps to balance the sweetness. This flavor has a solid fruit contribution, and though it is not at the same level as the nose I still taste notes of ripe melon, a touch of kiwi fruit, aromatic pear and some sweet apple notes. There is a touch of earthy spiciness in the finish as well as a spicy clove note that tends to linger a bit on the palate along with some warming alcohol notes. This is light and drinkable for a beer of this strength, though it could perhaps use a touch lighter body.

This is the best of the Steenbrugge beers I have had so far. This still isn't a great example of the style though, it could use more spiciness and some more fermentation character & nice malt backbone (appropriate for the style of course) would be nice as well, but it is serviceable.

Pours a hazy orange gold with a nice frothy crème head. Nose is inky dough with minor spices on there as well. Flavor is good. Nicely meshed sweet tones work with a barely noticed alcohol presence that goes away as the beer warms. Feel is smooth on liquid and the carbonation is about right, though slightly biting. Overall, this is a pretty nice tripel. I can't really say there are a load of complexities here, but I certainly enjoy drinking it.

330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 8.7%. Golden colour, slightly hazy, pours very fizzy with a huge to moderate head. Strong and pleasant aroma of spices, Belgian yeast and fruit (cider apples, oranges). Fizzy mouthfeel. The flavour is fairly sweet with notes of spices, white candi sugar, yeast and some fruit, noticeable hops in the finish.

I tasted this bottle on 5th Oct 2008, best by date 03/07/11. This is the rebirth of the former Brugge Tripel, brewed by PALM at De Gouden Boom, Bruges (now an apartment development!). The former brew was 8.2% but this one (as already posted) is upped to 8.7% ABV. Purchased as a box of 24 bottles from realbeers.ie.

Poured into a Straffe Hendrick glass a clear amber body with an (at first) generous whitish head thinning down to a thin head. Bubbles rising. Modest lacing on glass.
Smell was subdued pilsner type hops with some caramel-like sweetish maltiness.

The first taste was a bit strange; not too sweet with an unidentified aftertaste. As it warmed and aired it revealed itself to be a solid enough
tripel, without the spicy complexity of a Westmalle tripel but the alcohol is disguised making it an easy-to-drink brew. Smooth syrupy (but not cloying) mouthfeel. Nice beer!

A bright yellow, golden beer with a fine-bubbled head.

Smell is phenolic with fruity and spicy notes of ripe bananas, cloves and mango. A sweet maltiness with biscuity and bready notes.

Taste is fruity and mainly yeast driven. Hints of banana and exotic fruit layered with clove and a little cinnamon. Body is just great for a tripel, drinkability is good with just enough body. Bitterness is very low and hops are absent. Malt is subtle and has some biscuit and yeasty dough. The alcohol is very hard to taste.
