Notes from the 2002 Kerstbierfestival, Essen, Belgium.

Apparently one of the more popular Christmas beers in Belgium. Brewed since 1947.

Dark orange-y / amber. No head. Flat. Warm urine aroma. Touch of herbal. Dry, light-bodied, with a very weak malt character and sweetness. Very tea-like with yeast and herbal notes. Grainy and full of tannins in the finish.

Not impressed.

Poured amber with a very nice head, and smelled of roasty caramel and hops. Flavor was not unlike it's brother Palm, with a good amount of malt to accompany the hops. This "double" version however had a thicker mouthfeel but kept the same amount of drinkability. There's an "average" quality to the flavor, with the pils quality that is the backbone of so many all-nighter beers of this area of the world. I'd say this is a very good beer to drink at a Christmas party that won't floor you like some other Sinterclaus biers will do. Zwarte Pete would enjoy it. So did I.

Palm dobbel, probably best qualified as a dark ale, but nevermind:

it's dark copper, brown colour, creamcoloured head, thin, but decent carbonation.
Smell and taste are of sweet malt and caramel, some dark dried fruits too. Grassy hops as well.
Aftertaste has a bite to it.
The whole brew is ok: it's warming as a winterbeer should be, it's 6% abv is easy going down. Not very complex or exciting , but it will surely do on a Xmas party where tasting and sampling is not the the point.

Poured from a 300 ml bottle.
The colour is light amber, transparent, with a one finger head which quickly dissolves leaving light lacing on the glass.
Light fruity and caramel aroma.
Taste is lightly bitter.
Quite thick on the body, a bit oily too and medium carbonation.

A clear, brown beer with a small head and a small ring of foam sticking to the glass.

Smell is malty with caramel and some woody suggestion.

Taste is malty and caramellic, with a small alcohol burn. More than the normal Palm has. This beer is pretty clean and somewhat boring. There are simply not enough exciting tastes present. There is some maltbitterness and aftertaste is dry and bitter, which is nice. This is not an improvement compared to the normal Palm, the extra alcohol should be more complementing, but is more distracting from the nice malt and caramel profile the normal Palm has.

Copper colored beer, slightly darker then Palm Speciale. Good head, leaving a ring. A sweet malty sense, some bittersweet taste with some hop.
Normal carbonated driest body, little hop/ spice in the aftertaste.

A nice beer for a Belgian pale ale, but I prefer Palm Speciale.

300 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 6.0%. Nice amber / redddish brown colour, decent off-white head. Pleasant aroma of lightly roasted malts with some caramel, fruits and spices. Rounded and lovely flavour, again lightly roasted malts with a subtle touch of fruits and spices, hints of yeast. Moderate bitterness. Easy drinking, impossible to dislike. However, you might want MORE of the pleasant aroma and flavour elements.

The Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody has really belched forth one from the past this time! My late Pops, who died on 28 July 2001, was an avid bicyclist & requested that some of his ashes be scattered at the foot of both The Arc de Triomphe & The Eiffel Tower so that he could be present for the finish of The Tour de France every year. It fell to me as the estate executor to carry out his wishes & since it was post-9/11, air fares were dirt cheap. I flew into DeGaulle, scattered the ashes, visited the Normandy beachhead again & went on to Brussels for a few day before flying home out of Schiephol in Amsterdam. This bottle, as well as a massive assortment, came home with me & have been in The Beerfrigerator ever since. I figure that as I approach the 16th anniversary of Pops' passing that I will delve into that stash.

From the bottle: "For more than 5 years, the Palm Brewery has been brewing not only its Speciale Palm, but also for the festive season, its Dobbel Palm. This high fermentation amber beer with its own special aroma and taste brings warmth into your glass. Enjoy the festive season and ... cheers!"

I Pop!ped the cap & began an incredibly gentle pour into an awaiting chalice. Once sufficiently decanted, an in-glass swirl raised a brief finger of light-tan head that quickly reverted to wisps. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was quite sweet, clearly malt-driven, with notes of both bread and caramel, almost like rising dough. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was very bready with hints of caramel and dried Mediterranean fruits, like dates and figs. It was kind of like a liquefied fig newton. Finish was semi-sweet with the yeast having continued to help the beer ferment in the bottle & drying it out from what was probably originally a sugary malt bomb. There was still a good deal of sweetness to it.

Nice amber color with a shade of red. Medium carbonation, very small yellowish head, modest lace.

Smell is malty-fruity with a hint of apricot, pear and blackberry.

Start is malty, fresh, a bit acidic. Body full, rounded. Taste very rich, malts and fruit beautifully mixed. Hops in the finish, completing the picture. Mouthfeel sticky somehow, but OK. Aftertaste long, reminiscent of good complex wine.

Nice beer. When you see it, try it.

BB08-10-05. Hardly any foam comes out of this brew, poored in vertically and still hardly any head that has a yeloww color. Brew is amber and clear. Nose is oxidised, sweet and muffy. Litle alcoholic but no freshness at all. taste is like water, hardly any taste only litle (bad)maltyness and musty with litle alcohol and sugar. This one has nothing in it and mouthfeel is like sparkling water. How can anybody drink this. As bad as the regular( and dunno what the differance is).

25 ml dark bottle with christmas stars
Red copper coloured beer served in a tulip sized glass with white head
taste: caramel, little malt and fruit with bitter aftertaste
Like a palm special It was to muffy

To conclude: better than a regular palm but i'm still not a great fan

330ml bottle poured into Leffe chalice. One finger head, dark mahogany colour, dense but clear. Had a slight citrus aroma, I could't detect anything else. Fairly similar taste to Palm Special, had a bit more malt and a more bitter finish. Despite this I'd say it had a weaker taste with less flavour. The mouthful was slightly heavy but nice, average carbonation.
