Was quickly struck by the top-fermented Palm Hop Select as the Belgian beer some of us were awaiting ... a richly-flavoured beer that goes well with food, quite unlike the typical Belgian premium beer - very often an ale, or other type more exotic - that tends to have idiosyncratic, non-food-compatible flavourings & a high alcohol content. The balance here in the Palm Hop Select is 'just right' ... 6 % alcohol, nice look & aroma, a rich hoppy taste that is straightforward & full, & the ability to complement almost any meal or snack, even a spicy one. Offered in the ideal-size one-third-litre bottle. Has become my main beer to keep in supply at home & for guests.

Palm introduces a new beer. And though the Royal isn't very special, this Hop Select is a nice complement in Palm's stable.

L: almost perfect; the top could last a bit longer;
S: also almost perfect; nice grasses, nice tartness and the well known flowers of the Palm yeast; every time you smell, the smell discloses other elements;
T: round, grassy, a tiny lemon, but maybe a bit siruppy;
M: there's something lacking in the middle, the alcohol is a bit too low; the drinkability is great for a hop beer;
O: good stuff, a lot potential to become a commercial sale wonder.

33cl bottle into its own Palm Hop Select Glass

A- Amber Golden, cloudier than expected with inviting creamy head which lasts very well.

S - The hops permeates everything. 2 feet away, I can still smell it, and not much else when I close up.

T - Given the strong smell, was surprised the taste offered much more. Tangerine in particular came through and it also bore some resemblance to the regular palm, which is no bad thing. Lost a tiny few marks with a metallic hint which I would have preferred without.

M - Served cold and it sure was refreshing. Retained good carbonation throughout, little bit of creamy aftertaste which was also a nice surprise.

O - More than pleasantly surprised. This is a damn good offering, and I hope it stays around. Perfect for lighter drinking, with food, in Summertime... more than pleasing.

Palm is a resepctable beer when you can get it fresh, but the words "hop select" on a beer label makes me do that Tex Avery wolf howling thing. Going 330 ml out of the bottle into its own glass at Cafe Botteltje, on to the beer:

A lovely amber orange color in the glass, topped with a 1½ inch rocky head with good retention and attractive bubbles running throuhg its body. The aroma of fresh grassy and herbal notes hit the hop thing we. Complimenting those aromas are gentle fruit notes and a little tangerine.

Whether your palate is Belgian or American, the hop flavor is strong. There's a big bite of spicy grass first, followed by soft esters and toast. There's a spicier kick towards the end, which leaves a pleasant mark. The two sides work well together. It's medium bodied, spicy, with a buzzy sensation.

Pleasing "fresh hop" beer by Palm. I think it wil be a matter of when, not if, it hits the US market.

Didn't really know what to expect, but this is surprisingly good. Smells like fresh grass, subtle hop flavors and a malty aftertaste. This is a nice refreshing beer, similar to a maibock. I would recommend ordering this on a cafe terrace in springtime.

A: golden, with bit hazy that seem to come from yeast sediment that was poured in. thick foam.
S: metallic/rusty, fruity hops
T: zesty citrus/lemon peel hops, caramel malt, followed by hop bitterness. some alcohol notes.
M: bit sticky from caramel, but good representation of west-coast IPA. well balanced with hop flavor and bitterness.
O: i think this is a very nice homage to an american IPA (west coast) by a big Belgian brewery. I am very happy to find this beer in the local super market, where hoppy beers (in general) are hard to come by (in the Netherlands). i hope they keep on making this year round.
