Appearance: Cloudy; orangish; poured with small head; quickly dissipates

Aroma: Normal Bavarian wheat smell, but faint; spicy, malty, cloves

Taste: Tastes like a watered down wheat; fizzy like a carbonated fruit drink; not bad, but not impressed

Remarks: Did not score A, T, S, M at that time; disregard those scores

Poured from a brown 16.9 oz. bottle. Has a dark brown color with a 1 inch head. Smells of banana's and spices. Taste is rather mild, some cloves and banana's, very subdued compared to other dunkels. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and has average drinkability. Overall this is a fairly good brew.

Found in a Moscow grocery, the bottle is standard German brown half liter with a black, gold and white label with an image of a baroque church and a history lesson about Kempten. Purity law applies. Best before 8/11/06, I opened it on 2/23/06 - to celebrate "Protectors of the Mother Land" day here in Russia.

Pours a quite hazy dark orange under a firm 1.5 finger off-white head that settle slowly, leaving only a bit of lace - should have been more. The nose is strong with wheat and yeast, yet lacking in spice. Still pleasant, though. The mouth is very prickly and quite chewy, thick like fresh squeezed orange juice, but not sticky. There's nots of yeast in the taste, but not much else. Definitely no hops, and not even much in the way of wheat or other malt. Yeast, yeast and more yeast. The experience is enjoyable, despite the one dimensional nature of the brew.

This beer would go well with a filet mignon medium rare. Lightly carbonated, heavy toffee flavors. Only 5.0% abv, which is weak for a dunkelweizen. I paid 2.59 at hollingshead. Little to no head, quickly goes down to nothing. Not a chugging beer, "quaffable." If someone has a weak nose, this may not be the best beer, you need to get a couple sips in first. Aftertaste clings to the roof of the mouth.

Dark oranged color, beige foam, weizen-like, abundant. Quite compact.
The smell is essentially wheat, slightly citric, cloves, and a hint of pepper. Yeast.
Wheat in the taste too, with light banana. Less various, and tending to sweet and "warm" taste, not refreshning. Some citric.
Light body, and the aftertaste too, it slips away fastly, and doesn't left almost anything, just some citric again.

Presentation: Finally, the last of the myriad of Allgäuer Brauhaus beers that I collected during a beer raid last week. The Allgäuer Alt Kemptener Weisse has a metallic gold edged black colored main and V-shaped neck label with the words ‘Dunkles Hefeweizen’ in a small thin red band on both labels. Painted white crown cap completes the presentation. Just as the BA Database picture my sample arrived in a 1 Pint 0.9 fluid ounce standard tall looking brown glass bottle. The US added reverse label states that the strength is 5.0% ABV, no freshness date though. Lots of German on the main label which I can’t be arsed to translate.

Appearance: Cloudy dark brown body that has a dark woody appearance with a sludge like character. Big fluffy voluminous off-white head from the outset and it hangs around looking for complements it seems. The head is pillowy and very uneven but it leaves some nice lacing. Minimal carbonation.

Nose: Cloves and Banana’s but they are subdued in strength and character. Meanwhile, the malts seem to break though with some toffee and caramel. Mild yeast and earthy aromas have a sweet aspect.

Taste: Average levels of Banana, Cloves, Toffee, Malts and Yeast….some sweetness but not much. Finishes with a black skinned Banana feel, mushy off-flavors rescued by a mild spicy feel. As with the nose, the tastes are rather befuddled and not entirely sure of what they should be doing or how they should interact, if at all…..it’s a motley crew collection of individuals rather than a team effort here. Seems to be very unsure of itself.

Mouthfeel: Probably a redeeming feature here, whilst the nose and taste profile is confusing at best, the mouthfeel, as with all the other Allgäuer Brauhaus beers, is dependable, smooth, creamy and a nice feature of this brew, but it is not enough to be a savior though.

Drinkability: Pretty average, awkward finish makes for a difficult drink towards the finish, the funky over-ripe Banana feel increases as the beer warms.

Overall: Not that impressed to be honest. I think the silver labeled ‘Kristallweizen’ is by far the best of the Allgäuer Brauhaus bunch here, this ‘Alt Kemptener Weisse’ is a bit of a mess to be honest. Hope I can get rid of the mushy old black skinned over-ripe Banana taste before my next and last brew tonight…..not worth $1.99, if you have a choice, get the ‘Kristallweizen’ instead.

.5L bottle served chilled in a tall pilsener glass.

Appearance: Cloudy tealike brown topped by a light beige head (about 3/4" high). A small, but dense, layer of foam was left all the way down to the bottom of the glass. No lacing.

Smell: Sweet caramel malts with hints of banana, clove, and nutmeg. Some maple syrup whiffs, too. The esters were not strong enough.

Taste: Strong caramel sweetness, akin to a Sugar Daddy or a Tootsie Roll, but not cloying. Cloves and bananas are faint. Kind of bready.

Mouthfeel: Medium in body. Taste overstays it's welcome a bit.

Drinkability: This seems like pretty much an average rendition of the style in my experience.

I discovered this dunkleweissbier while scoping out a couple new (for me) locations. Having one dunkleweizen in my personal top three (Weihenstephan's), I thought I'd give Allgäuer's offering a try.
Poured from a 16.9oz bottle, it had a murky dark brown color and a monstrous fluffy beige head that slowly dwindled down to a ¼" bit of froth with spidery lace.
The smell was mainly of sweet caramel malt with some light bready notes and only small suggestions of banana and cloves. Definitely not packing the strong aromas found in other dunkleweizens. The taste was sweet and full of caramel flavor and a nice malty backbone. A light yeasty flavor came out but not the banana and clove characteristics. If anything, those flavors were even more muted than in the smell. The finish had a mild crispness and a lurking green banana flavored bitterness that was less than appealing. The feel was light, crisp, and clean.
This was a decent dunkleweizen; not in the same league as Weihenstephan's but still easily drinkable. I would have liked a more pronounced banana and clove taste and smell but this was still pretty good.

I found this obscure (to me) brew at a local natural foods grocery. It pours like many other dunkles hefes, but the aroma is just outstanding - super pungent with clove and banana esthers, everything I like about German hefeweizens.

The flavor is there to back all those great aromas, as well. It has the typical characteristics of most dunkles hefeweizens, but it isn't over-carbonated like some (i.e. Franziskaner), nor is it watery and thin like others (i.e. Erdinger). The clove and banana notes carry through in abundance, with a solid yeasty presence that really fills the palate. I would say this rates respectable and delicious second, behind the Weihenstephaner version, among the dunkles hefeweizens I've tried. Enjoy it if you can find it.
