12 ounce can from Ralphs supermarket in Manhattan village

Six pack was only four dollars on sale

Pours a veyr golden color into frosted mug with no head

No real smell apparent, but a little stale

Taste is practically nothing, very watered down and goes away fast

Could drink a lot of these because it is more like water than beer

I don't bash macros like a douche. This is just bad.

Pours out a typical macro gold with no head or lacing or anything. Smell is grains, corn and some weird hobo wine smell. Kind of like a white wine in the same field as Thunderbird (ESQ). Taste is a gagging mix of butter and cheap-ass white wine. Mouthfeel is flat and syrupy and only reminds me of the horrible taste. I don't want to drink this, but I paid for it, so I guess I'll have to.

This is what happens when those Kroger motherfuckers don't keep their Schlitz stocked.

poured into a pilsner glass it forms a loose, fizzy white head that maintains some structure for a couple minutes due to a high carbonation support system. Chill haze is evident, pale yellow body.

Corn husk is expected and it is indeed the main factor, light, sweet grain middle and finishes lemony and gross. Can states " Cold filtered for a full rich flavor"....Ummmm Ok its neither "Full" "Rich" or introducing any significant flavor. Its your typcial macro'ish type taste to it. I will add that this is worse than most macro's because in its attempt to be different it begins to be offensive. Cheap taste is worse than no taste at all. Give me a bud anyday over this.

Notes: As it warmed it got sugary and syrupy. Complete Crap.

Bland. Boring. Drinkable? Yeah... Pours out to a light gold color with a small head of white foam that quickly fizzled away. Medium level of carbonation. Next to no smell, with only traces of hops (?), corn and grain. Taste is weak and light; hints of maltiness try to make their way through, but get trampled by the lack of ingredients and over saturation of water. Hops are lost between the two. Mouthfeel could be refreshing if I were exhausted on a 100+ degree day. Drinkability is average. What this beer is lacking is depth and flavor. It's not offensive, but it's not good either.

HOLY DAMNATION!!! Josef, buddy, we need to talk...

Ok... let me preface this review with the fact that this is done in context of what this beer is, and what it is trying to accomplish. That being said, it is by far the single most hideous tasting beer I have yet to encounter. Now, mind you, I am in the habit of seeking out obscure, crappy American macro lagers just to give them a whirl and be able to claim "oh yea, I've tried the almighty Josef Hoffbauer Lager Private Reserve, and I survived..."

The color and head is as expected, pale yellow and weak head with no lacing. The aroma was putrid with vegetable mash and had absolutely no redeeming qualities. The taste is corn and vegetable and altogether not pleasing in the slightest.

To put this beer in it's proper place I had the opportunity this evening to down a couple of Black Labels ( a beer considered in the same class if not below Sir Josef Hoffbauer) and then I moved into a few of Hoffbauer's Private Reserves (I had purchased a 12 pack a week or so ago and thought this could not be nearly as bad as my first imressions so I thought I would try and compare it to somthing similar later once the 'distinctive' taste had been washed clean from my mouth)...eegads, if this is the private reserve I'd hate to see what he's shipping out to the public. I would take a Black Label, an Olympia, a Schlitz, a Hamms, some Schmidt, hell I'd even down a couple Red Dogs before I'd have any more of Josef Hoffbauer Lager. Unbelievable....even at 5.99 a half rack, there's better options out there people, c'mon.

Josef Hoffebauer?!?! seriously, are you kidding me? Josef?

Egads! Yet another Gluek product under one of the multitude of contract brew names they crank out. At this point, anything brewed in Cold Springs is immediately suspect. Of their sub-par products, however, this comes closest to being marginally palatable. Highly carbonated and light-bodied. Corn adjunct flavors notable, with some non-descript hop bitterning at the finish. Very little distinguishing flavors emerge, although there was an odd, chocolate note high in the malt - not chocolate malt, but rather a faint chocolate extract note. No one else noted it but me, so perhaps I was having a taste hallucination.

It is BBQ night at my house tonight. With BBQ like to have cheap beer that can be consumed in quantity.
This was on sale in Fred Meyer for $4.99.a 12 so what the goes.
The appearance is average macro..not as bad looking as somelight corn yellow colour..small frothy white head, abundant carbonation visible.
Not impressed by the aroma, some sweet sharp smell dominates, strange.
Taste while not good is Ok for its purpose..its light and fizzy and the malt taste isnt totally offensive..slight bitterness at the end..may be the hops.
Its light and moderatly refreshing on the palte.
An average beer..ok for what it American lager.

Know one should impressed with this type of lager. Its light and made to consume in quantites. In the same class of (bud, miller, coors and all the other clones) this beer is actualy better than most. The absence of any offensive flavors are not there!
just a mild old style corn flavor.

Smoking deal at 4.99 per 12 pack.

Jesus. Never before have I had a beer so awful, so foul. I had two sips and poured the rest down the sink. My roommate, trooper that he is, finished the 12-pack over the course of the next few weeks, mainly as his last beer or two of a long session. Really, truly horrible macrobrewed, adjunct-laced swill. Bitter (not in any sort of good way) yet also light, with no body, just lots of carbonation. Stay away!

This is brew that is sold as a store brand at Kroger's owned stores. It is a fairly straightforward pale lager that has no strong distinguishing characteristics nor attributes. Much like any typical macro beer the look, smell and taste are basically below average on the beer spectrum, but better than some majors on body and aroma. Pale gold body, white head that is adequate, but diminishing, and some light lacing.
