Pours a two finger light tan head that fades quickly to a ring, leaving some lace. Black color, no highlights. Roasted coffee nose. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Flavor is roasted to almost burnt coffee. Nice stout. Pricey at $7.00 for a 330ml bottle from Tully's Beer & Wine Wells, Me.

Nils Oscar Rwanda Gatsinga Coffee Stout, brewed and bottled by Nils Oscar Bryggeri, Nykoping, Sweden. Stout brewed with fair trade coffee. 11.2 oz.

Deep black color, rich, roasted espresso-like ring of foam, small and soon-gone.

Aroma: cocoa hits first, rich and luxurious, sweet, so sweet that I never notice the coffee. Figs, date, chocolate-covered carob. Molasses, maple, motor oil. Deep and ridiculously rich. Wow. Nice.

Tasting: smoothness takes on complexity. Roasted malts over all, fairly clean flavor, not giving off the complexity felt in the aroma. Excellent balance, beautiful, lush malt, tasty, with a light finish. Rolls easily off the palate. Does it's bit and exits.

I could ask for more, more, more, but there's nothing wrong with just giving you enough.

Poured from a 11.2oz bottle into a pint glass. Notch on back label but no way to tell what date it means. Was black in color. No visible carb and no lacing. Had an average sized tan head that quickly settled to a collar that eventually disappeared.

The aroma was heavy on the coffee from the Rwanda Gatsinga espresso. Not much else in the nose. Didn't get the chocolate or roasted malts that others mentioned. It needs something else besides the coffee. Taste followed the aroma and was coffee heavy and needing something to balance it. The coffee tasted watered down to me which hurt the mouthfeel.

Normally I love coffee beers but this one is a huge miss for me. And at $6.29 for a 11.2 oz bottle it is a major disappointment. Only positive is that I knocked Sweden off the list. At this price, don't recommend and one and done for me.

Bottle: Poured a black color stout with a medium light dirty brown color head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of dry coffee notes with a proper amount of roasted malt notes makes this quiet enjoyable. Taste is also a well balance mix between some dry coffee notes with some roasted malt with a light bitter finish. Body is lighter then average with good carbonation. Well done with great drinkability factor and the right amount of coffee; a fuller body would have provided more enjoyment thought.

Pros: Has some complexity to it. Fully flavored from start to finish. Unique expression of malt. I really think Nils can work magic with malt.

Cons: Thinly bodied. Not a great appearance. Sparse aroma. Only slightly above average for the style. Kinda disappointing.

Almost-but-not-quite-opaque mahogany that becomes dusky garnet red when backlit with weak morning sunshine. A huge chunk of pale caramel colored foam was created during a somewhat spirited pour. The crown looks very nice and is beginning to lay down equally attractive sheets of lace.

The aroma is straightforward and appealing. Roasted coffee beans combine with roasted malt in near equal measure. Hops weren't expected and aren't appreciated. NOCS smells like it will be pretty good beer on the buds.

Keeping ABV firmly in mind, Coffee Stout is a good effort. It isn't big and bold and brash, but then it wasn't brewed to be. It's a well-crafted, well-balanced stout that could easily be sessioned... if you feel like plunking down $5.99 per 330 cl bottle. Man, those import taxes must be killer.

Calling what happens at the start of each mouthful a 'jolt of joe' is probably overstating the case. Flavors of cold coffee, bittersweet chocolate and dark fruit combine seamlessly. Sweet (favored early) and bitter (favored late) are pretty much equivalent as well. This beer really has no weaknesses.

The mouthfeel score could just as easily have been one notch lower. It does just enough to be considered good, mostly by not losing too much heft and volume as the backstretch of each mouthful approaches. Gentle carbonation is a positive.

If you're in the mood for an incredibly delicious, world-class coffee stout, swim across the Strait of Kattegatt from Denmark to Sweden and pick up a bottle (or a case) of Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast. Nils Oscar's version is solid, but the price tag means that a second bottle isn't in the cards.

Purchased from Belmont Station, 11.2 fl oz..Poured into Douchesse De Bourgogne wine glass.

Dark brown body, maroon hue...airy head tiny head, aggressive pour

Strong coffee aroma, espresso like...bittersweet chocolate, hint of oak

Huge punch of roasted coffee initially...dark chocolate, slight maltiness.

Too thin for my liking, mild carbonation.

The taste is nice and smooth, and the coffee to chocolate balance is nice.

The colour is pinch black; the three finger head is warm pale brown. It sinks slowly to a finger thick head with a massive crater. Very little lacing occurs.

The smell is dry and sour-bitter. Dry and elegant notes of strong coffee, lots of heavily roasted malt. Did I find notes of rye? Hints of crackers and dark chocolate.

The taste is fresh and a little bitter. Then, a perfect taste of somewhat citric espresso coffee emerges. Sweet creamy notes of cocoa, newly grinded coffee, some beef stock and a flowery touch. Full bodied. The aftertaste brings a mild warming flavour of alcohol, fine notes of coffee and Brie cheese, lemon peels and balancing mild background bitterness. The finish adds some more beef stock.

The carbonation is medium to mild, the bubbles small. The liquid is creamy, very creamy for a 6% beer.

I have tried this beer from keg, and I must say that the coffee flavours were even more present than the bottled version.

Got this bottle a couple of months ago at Sams' in Chicago. Should have kept it in the fridge. Poured with a soap bubble head that quickly subsided; no lace. Color is an opaque brown. Flavor is a wet cardboard dry coffee stout. Flat. Thin. Slight boozy finish. Something went wrong with this one. *sigh*

Appearance: Pours a foreseeable black body with a full finger of beige froth.

Smell: Aroma of robust, roasted grains, baker's chocolate, meager dried fruit hints, all interwoven with modest cold extraction coffee accents.

Taste: Roasty, dark maltiness coupled with a guzzle of cold, black coffee and smoothed out with a subtle sweetness. A few chunks of unsweetened chocolate. Eventually, a slight charry quality enters the picture. Touch of dark fruitiness. Moderate amount of roasty bitterness midway. Tiny blip of acidity. Then, it's a return to the general coffee flavor until you reach the drying, roasty finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.

Drinkability: Above average! A generally likable coffee stout, it's not nearly as bold or overwhelming as some, but it still hits the spot.

11.2oz bottle shared thanks to axilla.

Poured a dark brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of coffee grinds, roasty, and dark chocolate. Tastes of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and espresso. I want coffee in my coffee beer, and this one had it.

Pours out looking syrupy. Sediment free bottle.

Hard to get foam on this one with a moderate aggressive pour.

Good smell, coffee. Not really fresh roasted.
More of a malt-coffee smell.

Taste hasn't let me down. Good bitter coffee.
Moderately dark chocolate. Dry, chalky.

Bit watery for stout.

Tasty. Consume with dessert.

11.2 oz bottle poured into a pub glass. Dark hazel head is a little thin, with a few specks on the glass. Color is a dense black/brown with spots of mahogany highlights around the edges.

Smell and taste is not just coffee, it's really, really good quality coffee. Nothing burnt, but perfectly dark roasted. Thin hint of baker's chocolate in the nose. Taste finishes with dark chocolate.

Mouthfeel is a mild cream texture. Smooth, but leaves a fine grit of espresso grounds. Excellent beer to finish the night.

A Is a very dark chocolate brown with a short tan head falling to a covering.
S Is certainly coffee, a strong coffee smell.
T Is more coffee, a liitle overly toasted coffee and at the end some roasted malt and a little dark chocolate.
M Is medium with light carbonation.
D Lowish ABV and good taste might point to excellent drinkability which it has but... it's just not the type of beer I'd want to drink more than one of at a time.

I wouldn't mind having one on a somewhat regular basis. Like other Nils Oscar beers I've had, they are a bit pricy.

11.2 ounce bottle. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. This definitely is a coffee stout, I mostly smell coffee but there's also some roasted malt and dark chocolate noticable in the aroma. The taste is similar to the aroma, coffee is strongest in the taste but there's also roasted malt, dark chocolate, and also a little bit of citrusy hops in the finish. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's creamy and a bit oily with average carbonation. Drinkability is very good, it's smooth and goes down pretty easy. I have to say this is a good beer, I'd definitely pick this up again. It's a good, enjoyable brew.

A: Black as coal with a nice beige lace.

S: Malts, Roasted coffebeans, Dark chocolate, Licorice.

T: Espresso, Hard bread (swedish style), Grain, Chocolate.

M: Quite thin with a nice touch of espresso and grain and a decent bitterness. Medium carbonation.

A very good coffestout from Nils Oscar. I'll definitely come back to this beer again. Recommended.

Poured from an 11.2oz bottle into a Val-Dieu goblet.

A: Pours a dark, cola-black with some faint lightening at the edges. One-finger, khaki-colored head recedes quickly to a thick, bubbly ring that leaves some pretty lace behind.

S: Rich aroma of dark roast coffee, with hints of milk chocolate, fudge, dark chocolate, and some citrus-y hops lurking in the background, for effect.

T: Tangy and bitter espresso roast coffee with a dusting of cocoa, plus fudge, milk chocolate, blackened malt, and some lemon-y hops. Cherry and toast in the finish.

M: Slightly on the thin side, sort of like a porter. Chocolate and coffee run the gamut from bitter to sweet to dry to roasty.

D: This beer went so fast! I think the slightly thin mouthfeel contributes greatly to what makes this so damn drinkable. Very refreshing coffee stout treat that isn't a 13% booze bomb.

Presentation: Thanks to DoctorDog for this little gem. Poured from an 11.2 oz brown bottle into a Duvel chalice. Bottle has a distinctive shape with very little truncation on the shoulders, like many Belgian bottles. Label is orange and brown on a silver background. A picture of a man in profile is upfront and center. Description of both the beer and the brewery on the back.

Appearance: Pours with 1 1/2 fingers of tan head. This settles slowly, eventually leaving behind a ring around the glass, a small island of foam above the nucleation site, and a thin coating every where else. A small of amount of lacing clings to the glass. The beer itself is black and completely opaque. No hints of light, even around the edges. No sediment in the bottle.

Smell: Strong aroma of milk chocolate and creamy sweetness with a slight hint of coffee bitterness.

Taste: Sweet chocolate upfront blends seamlessly into a mild coffee flavor. Some roasted barley bitterness in the finish, but overall very mild.

Mouthfeel: Lower than average carbonation level allows the creaminess of this beer to come through.

Drinkability: A solid, drinkable coffee stout in a beer world that seems dominated by over the top RIS. I could definitely see this one gracing the refrigerator again.

Served this 11.2 oz. brown bottle in a Chouffe tulip. No date. The body was a solid brown with a light tan head. The foam faded to nothing rather quickly.

The smell was chocolate malts. Molasses and a slight ashiness.

The taste was of dark chocolate bitterness and coffee. Smooth.

The mouthfeel was thinner than expected. Easy to drink.

Appearance: It pours a dark chocolate brown color. There's a little light getting through giving it garnet highlights. The head is mocha brown and reaches roughly a finger deep. It didn't waste any time fleeing the scene and left very little lacing behind.

Smell: The nose has a very heavy coffee/espresso scent kicking it off. It's the predominant aroma and permeates throughout. At the secondary level, there's some chocolate and roasted malts that give it some variety. Overall, it's very malty, though it doesn't have a very sweet aroma. It's not very deep, but does have a nice overall smell.

Taste: The flavor profile tracks the nose almost entirely. It's obviously features a very strong coffee/espresso flavor. I like that aspect of it quite a bit, as a coffee fan. Roasted and chocolate malts complement the coffee flavor nicely. Roasted malts come through stronger in flavor. It's slightly bitter due to what appears to be light hopping. Perhaps somewhat acidic. Alcohol is blended well and is not apparent. It finishes a little dry leaving a nice coffee aftertaste.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: It has a body that's on the lighter side of medium. Carbonation is notably high and doesn't help to smooth it out. Frankly, it needs a bit more body. It's just too thin to really satisfy. Drinkability is good. I like the flavor, but it just lacks that special something to really draw you back for more.

Coffee Stout is a pretty solid release from Nils Oscar. I haven't exactly heard great things about their beer, but this one's better than I expected. You really have to be a coffee lover to appreciate this beer. Coffee plays a very dominant role here. If you don't like coffee, you won't like this beer. I wouldn't characterize it as a "special" beer. It needs a little something extra to get there. Maybe more hop pizzazz would do the trick. It could also use a thicker body. But, it's a good beer as it is. A couple of tweaks would go far.
