a delightful old world smoked porter here, these nils oscar beers are awesome, and all seem to hold up well with some age on them. this has a great tan sudsy head on top of an eggshell black base, viscous and dense looking. the aroma is plenty of campfire smoke, definitely a rauch type intensity and woodiness to it, with a favorful grain base that may well include some rye and oats. a little spice with the roast up front in the taste gives more credence to the rye theory, notes of coffee and dark chocolate before the smoke sets in, at which point almost all grain subtlety is taken over by the smoke, billowing and big, burning still, active, intense butnot acrid or bitter beyond what would be reasonable. i like how much flavor they have packed into such a low alcohol beer, and i like all the bod it has. very hearty and late fall early winter appropriate. the slight oxidation here from its extended time on the shelf actually flatters it i think, gives it a softness and an integrating element. overall an awesome smoked porter, intensely flavored with the smoke but for the lovers of the style, its outstanding.

Nice smoky porter that does what it should without impressing excessively. But it tastes well, nevertheless.

Bottled and possibly bottle conditioned
Very dark brown-black with a tan head. Smoky, sausage, chocolate and smoked keifli snack aroma, smoky, a little bitter, and roasty taste, followed by onion. Full body, long, roasty and smoky finish.

500ml bottle from The Cave, Glasgow:
Black with a pinky sized, foamy head that is a light brown colour and holds reasonably well before eventually settling as a thin lacing.

Smoked wood with dark, rich malts to begin with. There is a strong smell from the beer that also includes hints of chocolate and coffee as well as a hint of bacon in the background.

Dark malts and a rich chocolate flavour that is backed up by some roasted malts and hints of coffee. There is some smoked flavours as well and then more milk chocolate.

Light than I was expecting from the smell but not really thin bodied. It is rich and creamy with moderate carbonation and a dry, mild bitter yet quite meaty finish.

Miles better than the last couple from the style that I have tried, definitely a smoked beer but luckily it doesn't stink of ham or worse and can be drank with ease. The balance is good in this one and bar the hints of bacon right at the end of the aroma.

Kicked myself a little for not grabbing this a few months ago. But props for my friend from Colorado for dropping one off for me on his trip through the midwest.

Perfect porter appearance, very low carbonation it appears, very small gritty khaki bubbles that linger around the edges is small threads. Dark and beautiful beauty of a porter with near ruby edges in the deep.

Smells wonderful. Dry coffee and very noticeable smokiness which really boosts the dry dark chocolate and coffee. A bit of a bitter scent. Like bitter charcoal smell. Very woody. A bit of sweetness, a touch of honey. This makes me smile. I can tell by the smoke scent this is going to be great.

Tastes awesome, a lot like it smells. A great robust smokiness, lots of smooth delicate coffee with an assertive dryness. There is a wonderful full on dark, DARK, chocolate character going on. A perfect woodiness. There is also a hint of caramel in the malt, which leads into the only down part of the beer. The more you drink the more you begin to realize there is this sort of sticky Baltic porter character happening with the alcohol. It's had to explain but if you have ever had Zywiec Porter, you know. It's that sweetness and the booze pair. It's not enough in this beer to make it hard to get through. But it is noticeable to a small degree which is a bit annoying but not luckily out of place per say.

There is a good piney hop bitterness to this to really accentuate the smoke and coffee.

Mouthfeel is pretty spot on. Very drinkable. Very dry, but I love dryness and this is the right amount through and through. There is a tackiness to it on the end though. The carbonation is also surprisingly low but I am on the fence on whether this is fine or if this could be better. It is sitting on the teetering point though. If it were any lower it would be bad. But it does help the drinkability.

Overall... Amazing. This is a really great beer with only a few pondering wonders. But it is good that the wonders and questions are pretty minor and I guess a little nit picky. This is a beer I will definitely be buying again. Great quality. Comparable to Schlenkerla and just as fine and wonderful. I keep at least one Schlenkerla in my stash at anytime, this would be another great smoke beer to do the exact same with and hopefully I will have the chance again in the future to do just that.

Poured a pitch black colour with a nice head of tan-coffee head, which recedes but leaves quite a good lacing.

Smell has a sticky barbecue smokiness. Lemon citrus oiliness, warming roasty hearty malts, coffee, really interesting, it retains a herbal freshness over the smoky malts. Apple, butter, maybe a bit of dark chocolate. Amazing.

T- a slightly creamy smokiness, soft with some malty and chocolate sweetness, dry cocoa, leather, with a mild smoke lingering on. A mild bitterness, earthy with a bit of clove spice. Finish is drying smoke, crisp malt. Delicious. I'm quite impressed by the balance here, smoke is quite muted and allows the malt and hops to come through.

M - really smooth, creamy carbonation, mild malty coating body, crisp smoky finish. Really tasty and easy to drink. it is on the mild side, but quite nice.

Really tasty. I like what they were going for here. The smell and subtely smoky taste profile hold a really respectable complexity. And the smoked malt is incorporated so as to give a permeating character but not overly dominate the beer, making it still a tasty quaffable porter. Balance is great, one of the better smoked beers I've tried, this is worth the effort, really well-executed.

The beer pours black with a thin tan head that dissipates quickly. Not much lacing is left on the side of the glass during consumption. The beer smells of dark malt, chocolate, and some mild smokiness. The beer doesn't have as much smokiness as I would want in a smoked beer, but the flavors are of dark malt and chocolate as well as smoke. Unfortunately, this bottle yields an "old beer" flavor, so I can't get a full impression of what might have been a smokier beer. The body is medium with moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy and the beer is still pretty drinkable despite being old. This is a good beer.

A very pleasant surprise! More like a very well-ballanced porter than a rauch bier.
Lots of chocolate and sweet liquirice. Fresh and fruity. Light body. Perfect winter porter. The ideal porter would have been a couple of percent stronger and even richer and with a longer finish. But this beer is only 6%. I could drink it all night! And I have...

Pours a solid black, with a finger of light brown coloured head. Leaves a bit of lace and svelt retention.

The aroma isn't extreme with the smoke, but it's nice, with some meatiness, chocolate, licorice and toffee.

Taste is a bit more meaty and smoky, tinges of dark chocolate, coffee, and high roast.

The feel has a nice nearly full and creamy body, nice carbonation, clean and smooth.

Strikes a nice balance with the sweetness and meaty character, overall quite a nice smoked porter.
