The color is copper but has a cloudy hazy that obscures the body. The head is just off white with a thick stickiness.

The aroma is nice with grapefruit, tangerine, rose petal, caramel malt and some pine sap but it's a touch subdued.

The flavor is obviously oakey, barrel and wood, with pine hops, resin, barley graininess, some honey sweetness and even a touch of vanilla.

The feel is quite astringent at the finish with a lot of alcohol warmth. What's interesting is the velvet smoothness that starts.

This is an interesting and worthwhile take on a DIPA.

Great double IPA! I absolutely love how this beer looks in my glass. It has a deep amber color with a tan frothy head. It smells fantastic too! Like a fresh IPA should but with an ever so slight mellow oaky spice. The taste is strong at first with a citrus pine bite which smoothens out with a light undertone of spice. I'm not sure how long they age this beer in the oak barrels but my guess is not very long due to the fact that you ideally want a fresh IPA and that means drinking it as soon as possible. For an aged double IPA, I absolutely think Heavy Seas nailed it!

A: Darker shade of copper in color. Clear. Forms a moderate sized, creamy, yellowish-beige colored head. Decent retention as the head slowly reduces to a thick surface coating. Spotty lacing.

S: Aroma is a blend of wood, earth, and pine. Hints of oak and vanilla. Maybe some caramel malts.

T: Taste starts clean. Smooth caramel malts, light oak and more than a touch of vanilla. There is a slight sweetness from the vanilla. Becomes more wooden: pine wood and oak wood. Caramel malts. Light pine resin. Alcohol.

M: On the heavier side of medium in body. Moderate bitterness. Lower carbonation. Velvety smooth on the front end. Prickly alcohol on the back end.

O: Wood aged IPAs are a tricky bunch. Sometimes when you age something on wood, the beer becomes something it's not supposed to be. And often with IPAs (or DIPAs) that something is making a DIPA taste like a hopped up barleywine which is exactly what happened in this instance. In the end, this isn't a bad beer. Tasty and quite drinkable for the ABV. Just not sure it's still a DIPA.
