12 oz can, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a pretty, cloudy, golden color with two fingers of white-colored head that quickly dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that completely covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Strong aromas of wheat, maybe some rye, bready and a touch dank. There are also aromas of banana, clove, orange, black pepper, coriander and maybe a touch of ginger.

Taste: While this beer has a strong, inviting aroma, it however, comes up pretty short on flavor. There is some notes of wheat and the aforementioned spices of black pepper and coriander, a touch of caramel-like sweetness, but there isn’t much else of very little of that. Disappointing, actually.

Mouthfeel: Thin and a touch watery. With an ABV of 4.5%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: Though this beer has a great aroma, it has a disappointing, faint flavor. I’m used to Heavy Seas beers having strong, bold flavor, and this beer comes up woefully short. Not of one of Heavy Seas’ better offerings, and not worth a repeat visit. Not at all recommended.

Clipper City Brewing Co. "Heavy Seas Smooth Sail"
12 fl. oz. can, "BESTBY 092616" and sampled on 081216
$1.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

"American wheat ale with orange and lemon peel added" - you can hardly go wrong with that! Both the orange and lemon are clear, as is the wheat, and if there's any flaw to that it's that the peel gives it a touch of chalkiness (or perhaps it's the yeast itself). Personally I don't mind it, it seems to fit right in with the wheat. It's medium-bodied and flavorful. I'd feared it might be light and watery but there's a good amount of malt to it; it's a proper wheat beer to start with, and the citrus peel just adds to that. It's mildly bitter, and the citrus notes help to dry the finish. It's bright, lively, and refreshing. Nicely done!

Poured from the can into a pint glass. Listed as best before 10/01/15

LOOK: Cloudy yellow with a finger of white head that leaves rings of lacing.

SMELL: Wheat, lemongrass, banana, and distant coriander and orange peel.

TASTE: Nicely balanced between traditional hefeweizen flavors of banana, clove, and bubblegum, and orange peel, lemon peel, grass, and cracker malt sweetness. Lightly juicy. Very pleasant.

FEEL: Light carbonation, slightly creamy, extremely drinkable.

OVERALL: I liked this way better than most previous reviewers seemed to. This is one of the better sessionable wheat ales I've had. Goes down like water on a hot summer day.

Smooth Sail Summer Ale brewed by Heavy Seas Beer, with an ABV of 4.50% This American Pale Wheat Ale pours out a nice golden amber color with a nice white head. There is a slight cloudiness to the look of this brew. There is also a decent amount of lacing to this brew, it sticks to the glass nicely. The smell of Smooth Sail Summer Ale is rich with sweet flavors, like fruits and citrus. There is also a good amount of grains and malts in the smell of this wheat ale. You do pick up on some mild hops in the smell of this brew. Now for the taste, it is bold with flavors, you first pick up on the citrus sweetness , then the grains and malts. There is a lot going on in Smooth Sail Summer Ale. This wheat ale has a real super nice balance to it, there is nothing overpowering about this brew. I can't get over how smooth this brew goes down. This brew would go down nice on a hot summer day. The mouth feel of Smooth Sail Summer Ale , Sweet, Citrus, Clean Smooth and Refreshing. Nothing bad about this brew, going to look this one up again in the summer. Overall I'm giving this brew a 4.25 out of 5. I will buy this brew again. Heavy Seas Beer,d I'd a real nice job with this one.

I think you have to take this beer for what it is.....a very light summer ale with a tremendous drinkability. The flavor is so very light but it holds an obvious wheat malt and an almost Pilsner style. This is made to drink by the pool and it succeeds.

Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a rich golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, some wheat, hints of lemon. Taste is wheat, bready, a bit of lemon, refreshing, but a bit on the bland side. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall a decent beer, but nothing special.

Smooth Sail Summer Ale | Heavy Seas Beer. Poured from the can into a pint glass, the head on this brew is two fingers thick ,with lateral lacing, and a slightly opaque golden body.

I smell the addition of citrus peel doing a great job complimenting the traditional wheat components.

Tastes like a tad bit of apple juice with the other notes from the smell. Smooth, clean, and refreshing.

Medium-light mouthfeel with fair carbonation.

Overall, I'll choose to give Smooth Sail Summer Ale | Heavy Seas Beer a 4.25
