Brewed by:
Heavy Seas Beer
Maryland, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial Pilsner

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Arguably our most well-balanced beer, Small Craft Warning seems at once hop-forward and malt-forward; our brewers debate over which flavor force prevails in the beer. Small Craft exemplifies a robust pilsner - it's crisp, well-carbonated, and slightly sweet. The beer is characterized by a firm malt backbone and a pronounced hop character. A fine aroma, from an array of hops, completes this quaffable beer.

Imperial Pilsners have always been an enigma to me. Isn't a pilsner supposed to represent all that is cool and refreshing in the beer world?

I had this on tap over at the Hard Times Cafe in Springfield.

A: Poured a mild, hazy, mandarin orange color with about a finger or so one finger frothy head.

S: I definitely got the pilsener malts upfront along, with a substantial citrus component. Overall, this was not that potent.

T: As with most Imperial pilsners, this wasn't crisp or refreshing in the slightest. I got quite a bit of pepper on the finish, along with a fruit sweetness, which was muted by either thyme or white pepper.

M: Sweet, but not too... thick as hell overall. Okay on the palate with its low carbonation and malt heaviness and the lacing was somewhat ridiculous.

O: This was passable, but I dig traditional pilsners much, much better.

I am biased when it comes to pilsners. This is one of my favorite beers here recently. Tried it with some friends over Thanksgiving with mixed reviews.

Appearance is a little golden with a light head.

Smell and taste basically coincide with each other. Sort of a sweet taste and smell which I prefer. Both of the guys who tried it liked it overall but thought it was a little too sweet.

The APV is a little more than what is offered in MS. Therefore this pils packs a small punch. But you would not necessarily know it unless you observe the small print on the label. Not being drenched in an alcohol taste is very appealing to me.

Does well with my Beer Geeks when they feel like something lighter than the IPAs, stouts and porters they can be given to drinking.

I prefer the lightness of "blonde" pilsners generally over the thicker more syrupy and spicy brews, so this fits my palette like a glove.

A: golden color with a small head that fades to lacing.

S: Mild aroma of fresh grain with a bit of sweet/spice.

T: Nice malty sweetness with a subtle bitterness and a clean finish.

F: Medium body, smooth with a nice balance. The 7.25% ABV is well hidden

O: An easy drinker to kick back with. A good pilsner with a bit of a kick.

A - Crystal clear copper hue with 2 fingers of creamy white head. Lots of rising carbonation.

S - Sweet smelling, slightly bready, with faint earthy hops.

T - Very sweet, unlike most pilsners. Citrus hops as well as general caramel malts balancing it out. No distinct flavors, just very sweet with a good hop balance. Not too bready compared to most pilsners.

M - Light body, slightly sticky. High carbonation as expected from the appearance. Finish is sweet with slight lemon aftertastes.

O - ABV doesn't come through at all, I might almost say this is more like a Pale Ale than Pilsner, but it's not hoppy enough for that, sort of a middle ground with higher ABV.
