A golden IPA with great clarity. Smell is absolutely amazing, mango, pineapple, tropical fruit and stone fruit, very strong and pleasent. Light and crisp, with juicy fruit flavors.

Mostly clear bronze with a thin, but lasting creamy white head. Leaves strong lacing.

Fruity aroma: mangos, peach. This carries to the taste, even sweeter, like a sweet and sour mix cocktail. Dull earthy, tea-like bitterness cuts through in the back end.

Medium bodied, slightly creamy, feel.

I like the strong fruit, but it comes off a little saccharin to me.

The eradication of The Bottle Backlog has created the possibility for many brewery horizontals, most notably New Belgium, but here comes one that is going to be a LOT of fun. I have known owner Hugh Sisson since he was the owner & brewer at Sisson's Brewpub in BAL before going on to open Heavy Seas. His head brewer is now Chris Leonard, former owner & brewer of the GEN Lafayette Brewpub in PHL & I once wrote a great Beer Pest piece about his (now ex-)wife, Kristen. As if all of that were not enough, I am a retired U.S. Navy sailor who spent a LOT of time aboard ships and underway, so nautically themed beers are right up my alley.

From the bottle: "Infused with grapefruit zest and natural mango and blood orange flavors. TropiCannon is a tropical twist on our Loose Cannon IPA."; "Clean Water Fund [-] A portion of the proceeds from each case of beer we sell goes to help CleanWater.org, a national organization dedicated to protecting the quality of the water we drink and the water we use to brew. Can't make great beer without clean water! Finds from the sale of this beer go back to the region where it was purchased."

The Cannons could be heard in the tropics today as I dedicate this review to my recently-deceased shipmate, CoyDog Coyer. He was one of the best Gunner's Mates with whom I had the pleasure to serve & his class on the modified, tactical Weaver stance remains a memory to which I will always refer.

The Pop! of the cap seemed particularly poignant today as my kitchen filled with onlookers. I was visited quite frequently by another buddy, Kenny, but with the recent deaths of Jimmy & Coy, they seem to have all connected with my late-Pops & now I rarely drink beer by myself. Once the cap was off, the place seemed to fill with a fruity freshness like air freshener! A gentle pour, followed by a vigorous in-glass swirl, raised two fingers of dense, foamy, tawny head that quickly retreated into wisps. Color was Amber to Deep Amber/Light Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13) with NE-quality clarity. The nose smelled like breakfast on the mess decks in the tropics! Oranges, grapefruits, lemons, mangoes, guavas & papayas all got jammed into this one. Carmen Miranda in a liquefied IPA form. I have recounted this one before, but I was given to public sex with a favorite B-girl in Olongapo City, P.I. in 1987, utilizing a hammock on the dance floor. One night, before I arrived, she & Mama-san fashioned an entire outfit out of fruit, some of which I ate, the rest crushed into a sticky, pungent paste. This was VERY evocative of that memory. Mouthfeel was medium, but silky, a velvet glove caressing my tongue. Am I allowed to fall in love with a beer? The taste was much like Loose Cannon in that it was not going to do the trick for an IBU-seeking hophead, but if you can appreciate the newer tropical fruit-like hops, you are totally going to dig this one! It was highly fruity and not as citrusy as the label had led me to expect. Instead, it lived up to its tropical fruit billing and was very pleasant to taste. There is a subtle tang to guava and papaya that is nearly impossible to describe, except in very raw terms, which may not be appropriate here. Think cunnilingus. I will leave it at that. Guava, especially. There you have it - a subtle, tangy earthiness, evocative of tropical fruits and human sexuality. I am reasonably sure that such is what Mssrs. Sisson & Leonard had in mind when crafting this one. Ha! Finish was still semi-dry, but that is okay, even by this self-described, self-avowed hophead. Hops need not beat you (me) about the head & shoulders each & every time. Just most of the time. Aside: Would yinz put this in CANs? I would LOVE this at the beach this summer!

Way to sweet. Very light color for an IPA. Fruit flavors way overwhelm any hops.

Surprised at the high Citrus aroma when first poured. Nice hops but the citrus flavor is strong. Like having a Screwdriver with beer! Nice change from other Citrus beers. Pours a small head. Goes down smoothly, not bitter.

Brewed with blood orange, grapefruit, mango and lemon flavor. "We've downplayed some of Loose Cannon's piney-ness and amped up the citrus by swapping Centennial and Palisade hops for Amarillo and even more Simcoe"
7.25% ABV.

Pours out to a brilliant dep golden, with peach highlights, forming a solid creamy off white head with beautiful retention and lacing. Oh man, the nose is wonderful. Smells like splitting open a fresh tangerine. Wonderful nose. the mouthfeel is smooth medium bodied, a little acidic from the fruit and hops, but smoother than most IPA's. Taste is quite nice. This is a well pulled off balancing act between the fruit and the hops. The ho0ps could easily become too bitter and drown out the fruit, but thye IBU's aren't overwhelming and the tropical fruit of the hops accentuates the fruit of the beer. Quite nice. No appreciable off flavors or aromas, just a bit green hop vegetal in the finish.

A surprisingly nice beer. Heavy seas does a bang up job on most of their beers and this is no exception. Well done. I would probably buy this again.
