TropiCannon Citrus IPATropiCannon Citrus IPA
Notes: Our brand new citrus IPA is exploding with bright citrus aroma and flavor. Creating an exciting new variation on our flagship Loose Cannon, TropiCannon clocks in at the same 7.25%ABV as its cousin, but packs a full blast of blood orange, grapefruit, mango and lemon flavor. We've downplayed some of Loose Cannon's piney-ness and amped up the citrus by swapping Centennial and Palisade hops for Amarillo and even more Simcoe. We've introduced dried grapefruit, orange and lemon peel in the brewing process and added mango, blood orange and more grapefruit post-fermentation.

Poured fresh from a growler. I would agree with the comment about the orange artificial smell. There definitely is an element of Sunny D right away upon first sniff but then you see it and it looks nothing like that. The taste is decent for a trop IPA and is not harsh; there is no translation from the Sunny D smell to the taste. It’s enjoyable on a summer day but not one I would get again. The smell reminds me of sweetened orange juice so much that I don’t think I can get away from that.

Poured with a huge cream colored head in an amber body. The orange juice sticks out immediately upon sipping, with hop characteristics in the background but malt shining through on the after taste. The malt and the citrus make it taste like Fruit Loops. There's a slightly bitter sudsy taste building in the background, but it's a solid beer.

Pours an orangy gold colour with a small but determined head. I get hops, peach and tangerine on the nose. The taste adds pink grapefruit to this fruity combo, making this somewhat of an unusual beer, highlighting the tangerine rather than the grapefruit. Enjoyable, but a bit high on the ABV

Anyone say artificial orange flavor? This beer has it by the butt load. Not a great flavor in my opinion. Hard pass for me going forward. No IFs ANDs or BUTs.

This beer was very unique. Nice orange color with an almost orange-tinted head that stayed for a good bit. The smell was strong orange citrus, very much like fresh-squeezed OJ. The taste was more along the lines of grapefruit, but very good if you like strong citrus as a beer. It was light on the mouthfeel and very refreshing. There's Pineapple and Mango in my sample pack and the Pineapple was the best out of the three.

TropiCannon Citrus from Heavy Seas Brewing. Purchased on 5 Aug 21 from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. $19.00 (Including tax) per 12-pack of 12 oz cans, in a variety pack with six Citrus, three Mango Lime, and three Pineapple ($0.133/oz). On room temperature shelf at store, stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 7/8/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Can marked on bottom “BEST BY 07/24/21”. Served at 44.4 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 52.3 degrees.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Pale Gold (SRM 4), slight haze.
Body – Pale Gold (SRM 4), hazily opaque. When rear-lite, translucent.
Head – Large (Maximum five cm, aggressive center pour), light yellow, medium density, good retention, diminishing to a seven to eight mm crown and a rocky partial cap. Second pour produces a 0.3 cm cap.
Lacing – Good! Thick partial bands of tight, near microscopic bubbles, with some tiny stalactites and connected to the next band by thin delicate columns.
Aroma – 3.5 – Strong orange soda, no malt, no yeast.
Flavor – 4.5 – Begins moderately bitter and slightly oily, with citrus flavors, reminiscent of TANG™. No malt. No yeast. No ethanol (7.25 % ABV, as marked on container) taste. No gastric warming initially, but it begins to build toward the end. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, slightly oily, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4 A bit oily but otherwise an easy drinking very citrusy IPA. I see a couple more 12-packs in my immediate future.

Tallboy can from the LCBO; dated Apr 21 2021, listed at 7.1% and served barely chilled. "Product of Canada" on the front label, "brewed for Heavy Seas Beer, Toronto ON" on the back.

Pours a foggy golden-orange colour, giving rise to nearly an inch of smooth, foamy white head that seeps off within five minutes or so. It leaves behind a full curtain of beautiful lacing, as well as a soapy, sudsy collar and a filmy cap - a fine-looking IPA, that's for certain. The aroma includes bright, juicy notes of tangerine and blood orange, as well as hints of grapefruit, lemon-lime soda, melon and berries.

This is one of those cases where it smells a lot better than it tastes - lots of tangerine flavour, with bready pale malts, lime and honeyed sweetness. Hints of grapefruit and blood orange come through by mid-sip, with flavours of passion fruit, orange peel and piney, earthy hops coming through at the finish. The aftertaste is bitter, a little astringent, and rather clingy, with just a touch of faintly boozy spiciness and some citrus oiliness. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation that gently prickles the palate; feels slick and slippery, coating the tongue with each sip. Between the 7+% and cloying citrus flavourings, it's not the most drinkable IPA I've ever had, but one serving was easy enough to put down.

Final Grade: 3.65, a B grade. Heavy Seas TropiCannon is not the best citrus-infused/flavoured IPA I've ever had, but I wouldn't call it one of the worst, either. I can't precisely say why this one rubbed me the wrong way - I suppose the bright, fruity, juicy-sweet 'citrus flavouring' of the forefront and the bitter, earthy tail end are such a huge contrast from one another that the overall experience is just disjointed and not wholly satisfying. The lingering citrus peel oiliness in the aftertaste is also mildly off-putting. Worth a try if you really love orange-flavoured IPAs, but it'll be a one and done for me, I think.

For me, the orange/fruitiness is way too cloying in this one. It’s like they brewed it with orangeade.

I love Loose Cannon, so I thought I'd try this. Too citrusy for my taste, but what the heck, that's what they say it is, and some will find it refreshing on a hot day. Orange zest flavor predominates taste and aroma, nice golden color, head lasts about 5 seconds, but nice lacing, moderate carbonation. I'm finishing it as I write this, and liking it a little more as I get to the bottom of the glass. A respectable try.

I give this beer 5 on all accounts real refreshing on a hot day. The citrus may be over the top for some, but for me it’s a real unique beer. The taste to me is really similar to sunny d or hi-c which is weird yes. But honestly I love getting buzzed of this sunny d beer lol

Poured cold from 12-ounce can into a straight-sided glass mug. Hazy, yellowish-orange body beneath a thick white head. Good retention and lacing. The aroma bowls you over as soon as the beer hits the glass. Huge aromas of orange, grapefruit, mango, and pineapple greet the nose. These are present on the palate as well, along with lots of citrus-zest bitterness. The finish is on the sweet side, with a tart and bitter note of citrus zest lingering on the palate. Overall, this is a quite tasty and fruity IPA and an excellent breakfast beer to boot.

The pour was a very transparent orange and gold color. The smell is something to behold if you like tangerines. Other than actual juice, I have never had aroma like that hit upon pour. The feel was medium/thin with tiny carbonation. The taste is bitter orange and grapefruit. albeit a bit harsh

Overall, this beer isn't for everyone, but if you want to try something that has aroma like no other, you should try this one. I think the aroma and taste are very different, so you are expecting something completely different than what you get. I would buy it again, but this is drink one and only one beer. It is also one that I would not hand out to friends unless I really knew they like it.

Poured clear golden color. Aroma hits you immediately. Strong citrus, an almost candy Aroma. Thankfully more bitter than expected as it smells sweet. Creamy head dissipates rather quickly, nice lacing. Got this with beer of the month club, definitely more of a summer beer. Very good though.

Cloudy amber haze appearance with a tight white head. Citrus, not tropical fruit, explode in the nose: orange, grapefruit, lemon, and I guess some mango too, hops are very mild. Taste is much the same, some lime zest is in there now, maybe pineapple, no nuance, hops are so light and not bitter on the finish, herbal even. Feel is medium bodied, bright, smooth, and juicy, but a little watery. Standard fruited ipa but without hops to elevate beyond average

Absolutely undrinkable! I have never reviewed a beer on this site and I was so disgusted by this IPA that I logged in to hopefully save someone from spending money on this garbage.
The fake, candy orange flavor ruins what would have been a mediocre IPA. The flavor reminds me of tang, or orange tootsie pops (without the chocolate).

Poured from 12oz can into snifter. 1 finger head, quickly dissipates. The smell hit me immediately. Intense mango, and I mean INTENSE! Rather delightful. It's hazy gold in appearance. Upon taste, I find the lime just slightly too prevalent. I think maybe just a hint of lime would be better but overall it's pretty good. Semi bitter suite, goes down smooth.

*edit The taste really lingers

Poured into a tall clear pint glass. Appearance has a clear golden orange color and a white head that dissipates rather quickly. Lacing is decent.

Aroma is very citrusy and also smells like candy. Notes of oranges, blood oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, pineapple, passion fruit, and "Fruity Pebbles". Also citrus rinds.

Taste is more bitter than the aroma could suggest to someone. I mainly taste strong citrus zest, along with some notes of lemon rind and lemon juice. The beer is partly sweet, tasting fruity notes of the aforementioned cereal and sweeter citrus. Body is medium-light.
