TropiCannon Citrus IPATropiCannon Citrus IPA
Notes: Our brand new citrus IPA is exploding with bright citrus aroma and flavor. Creating an exciting new variation on our flagship Loose Cannon, TropiCannon clocks in at the same 7.25%ABV as its cousin, but packs a full blast of blood orange, grapefruit, mango and lemon flavor. We've downplayed some of Loose Cannon's piney-ness and amped up the citrus by swapping Centennial and Palisade hops for Amarillo and even more Simcoe. We've introduced dried grapefruit, orange and lemon peel in the brewing process and added mango, blood orange and more grapefruit post-fermentation.

12 ounce bottle poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

L---Clear, golden orange color. White head faded quickly to a cap and leftok lacing.

S---Strong citrus as advertised. Orange is dominant, backed up by grapefruit and lemon.

T---Follows the nose. There was some additional tropical taste, perhaps mango or papaya.

F---Light to medium feel. Well carbonated. It's one that you could chug to quench a deep thirst.

O---A good beer from a good brewer. I'll keep an eye out for this one as summer gets warmer.

Excellent citrus IPA. Being new to the IPA beer industry, I find this beer to be packed with a fruity taste, similar to Hawaiian Punch taste. So far this is the best summertime ipa beer I've had with "citrus fruitiness" being the desired taste. Unfortunately they don't sell this in my state and I have to travel to get it.

Slightly hazy copper color with a nice head and lace. Strong but not overwhelming citrus scent. Taste is not overly hoppy, but is light and crisp. Great summertime boat beer.

Pours a clear, deep gold, with a small head but nice lacing

Smell: oranges with a slightly sweet, candy sent

Taste: it tastes like they added a bunch of orange rinds/peels to the fermenter. The orange bitter is overwhelming and barely any beer flavor came through. I wouldn't have been able to tell if this was an IPA or another type of beer because all I could taste was orange peel. If someone had told me this was an orange flavored hard soda, I might have believed them. Sorry for the harsh comment, but I was really dissapointed on this one.

Citrus IPAs typically get their citrus flavor from the hops, and sometimes an additional flavor is added, but this is just too much.

Do not recommend for someone looking for a true ipa.

Fairly clear and coppery with two inches of white head that is more fizzy than sudsy and leaves little to no lace. Nose is fairly strong and candy like featuring pear and grapefruit like aromas. Taste is much the same with a nice medium hop bitterness. Flavor is more blood orange but in an artificial plastic like flavor. Feel is medium in body and carbonation, nothing remarkable, finishing with a touch of astringency.
After having a few these over the last 5 or so years I can honestly say this one really isn’t bad but not my thing. Maybe a good first beer at the pool or tiki bar. I would also be curious to see how it pairs with a tropical themed burger or chicken sandwich.

Drinking this at my local tap house, Tapped in Greenville NC.
Poured from a Tap into a pint glass.
Appears hazy yellow orange, with a nice head that dropped quickly.
Smells citrusy orange sweet.
Taste follows the nose, very orange juice forward.
Mouth feel is medium light for the style.
Overall a very citrus nice IPA that I would definitely order again.

The beer pours a somewhat cloudy amber with a not long lasting head

Smell is superb, citrusy just like it should with the aroma of oranges

Taste is where this beer falls apart for me. The bitterness of the hops comes through but the strong taste of orange peel comes through. Wish it was the orange fruit itself, not the peel

Feel is okay but after the taste issue it doesn't really matter

Pours a translucent, yellowed amber. Like a glass full of orange topaz turned liquid. Sprouts a slender slice of white foam that retains reasonably and---surprisingly---laces on and on, no matter how deeply you drink.

Bitter orange rind, tart mandarins, and ruby-red grapefruit steal the headline while a transient, sweet scent (reminiscent of Fruity Pebbles) makes will-o-wisp appearances.

A barrage of baby bubbles crash across the tongue like waves upon a rock. As they dissipate, a juicy, light bodied ale splashes down while that flock of micro bubbles rise to the roof of the palate. Finishes clean and crisp.

Fresh-squeezed blood orange rimmed with puckering lemon zest, ripe mango, and lashings of pungent pine resin. Bright, citrus hops billow and snap like fresh linens in a sunny summer breeze.

Unfortunately, half the time you'll open one that's poorly balanced and all those citrus flavors are violently acidic while the sweet ones teeter at the eye-watering edge of artificial. Any more intense and it'd taste like a Glade plugin. Due to this upsetting inconsistency, the taste scores poorly.

Clear copper color with a nice fluffy white head. Great retention and lacing.

The aroma of fresh citrus fruit hit me as soon as I cracked the can. Upon sticking my nose to the glass, the scent of fresh grapefruit juice and zest and orange is overwhelming.

The taste is dominated by the blood orange and grapefruit juice, sweet and sour at the same time. Very zesty and bright. You get hints of the mango, pineapple, and a bit of biscuit malt. Finishes juicy but with a surprising smack of hop bitterness, citrusy and a touch piney but more pronounced than from the fruit rind. Clean and crisp.

A really good citrus IPA! Super refreshing.

Nice citrus notes, huge in fact, worked well with the bitterness of the hops! I would think this to be a perfect summer beer. Hope to find it in June/July instead of December!

Clear gold with white head, excellent retention, rings of lace
Lots of citrus in the aroma: ruby-red grapefruit, blood orange, some pineapple and passion fruit, other assorted citrus
Flavor reflects aroma, slight caramel malt background. Citrus pith finish is a little too bitter when paired with the hops, but is refreshing.
Pretty light for the style, appropriate carbonation
Not my favorite by any means, but I can see why folks like it

From a 12oz bottle (best by 3/1/20) into a pint glass. Pours a translucent orangish copper color with two fingers of off-white head. Moderate retention and lacing. Smell is dominated by grapefruit and oranges-very strong smelling. Taste is mostly grapefruit/orange but with noticeable alcohol. Citrus is too dominant IMHO. Feels thin in the mouth with a bitter alcohol aftertaste. I'll be the first to admit that this type of beer isn't my thing, but that being said this one also doesn't seem to be all that well put together.

From an aluminum can, this brew pours a completely clear, medium-gold color with a thick white, foamy head. The aroma is intensely fruity. smells like a fruit punch. I get grapefruit, mango, lemon, orange peel, and more. Intense. The taste follows suit. Grapefruit dominates the flavor, though. More fruit than beer flavor. Wow.

Leans more traditional IPA than Hazy/NEIPA upon appearance. Smells like Fruity Pebbles strongly. The fruit punch mixture of mango, grapefruit, and guava/pineapple dominates with a very mild hop/IPA backend. If you like IPAs and want the fruit experience of a Hazy with a traditional mouthfeel this is a great hybrid.

On tap. Poured a clear, golden orange color with a small, off-white head of foam. It smelled of orange, pine and toasted caramel. So much orange taste. Really strong with some toasted caramel and toffee.

There is a best by date on the bottom of the can. The pour is a dark orange that's almost leading to amber in color. The aroma is of bold citrus & the taste is the same. Wow! I have not had a beer that was this bold of citrus in quite a while. They were not playing when they mentioned that they put grapefruit zest & blood oranges in here cause they certainly are in here. The aroma is great but the taste is a bit harsh. I now have learned that I have a limit when it comes to how much citrus can be put into my beer. Yes, I agree the blood orange is too dominant, I prefer to be more subtle & relaxed. Cheers! C

A brewery founded in the 1990s and this is my first. It is very hard to know how many of those there actually are from that era that I have not tried. But, it is always a thrill to find a new one. So, I went on their website and they truly are "Fearless, Bold, Independent" as advertised. Their packaging is consistent and good (albeit not always in good taste.) And their story is well told. I found Heavy Seas in Wisconsin and wonder why it is not elsewhere. Anyway, glad I found them. Big OA Hugs.

As for TropiCannon, there are things to like also. While Looks are only slightly above average (lace would be nice), the citrus Smells are other-worldly for the AIPA world and are particularly welcome for a malt-head like me. Tastes are largely the same, refreshing and interesting and hard to describe... but salivating. Feel is a draw: thin, but not too bubbly.

Will I repeat this AIPA ? Well... I repeat very, very few... but TropiCannon has a shot.

We got this in a growler at State Line Liquots, Elkton. It is refreshing for one beer, but then it gets very tiresome. The orange flavor is too dominant; would not get this again.

This came as part of a mix 12 pack. Pours a nice pale color. Smells, tastes and finishes like an orange soda. I will try to pawn off the remaining 2 cans on a friend looking to try something new.

Pours an almost clear orange color with medium head and good carbonation. Smell is really fruity and citrus. Taste is of irange, mango but is not as sweet as the taste, kinda like butter citrus and some hops. Light mouthfeel a nd a sweet and bitter aftertaste. An excellent brew, just a shade short of outstanding.

This is one of the worst "Trop" beers I've ever had.. EVER.
Aroma is the only respectable thing I sensed.. and then I took a drink.
Taste was too .. artificial.
MF was as the same going in as going out. Carbonated.
Overall.. a drain pour X2.

Really not sure why this beer has such a low rating! The aroma is extremely fruity in such a wonderful way! It’s an easy beer to drink. It’s not overly hoppy which is surprising for an IPA. It has a fruitier profile than most IPAs I’ve tried and it’s incredibly unique.

Look: Slightly hazy. Orange-amber. Medium-sized, off-white head. Good lacing.
Smell: A powerful, sweet, orange-candy aroma leaps out of the glass. Melon and grapefruit aromas.
Taste: The taste is less sweet than the aroma -- more like bitter blood orange or grapefruit. The citrus bitterness leads into a hop bitterness that lingers for a while. Along with the hop bitterness at the end is a hint of sweet malt finish with orange and lemon. A bit of herbal hop spiciness can be detected in the aftertaste. I could detect mango as well, but only after it was pointed out. The bitterness and sweetness in this beer is very nicely balanced.
Feel: Medium-bodied and medium carbonation, bringing to mind a slightly pulpy grapefruit or orange juice.
Overall: This thing is a real citrus bomb, and although I recommend giving it a try, you may not like it unless you're looking for something with a ton of fruit/citrus. It's got a bit of a sweet/fruity mixed drink quality.

That said, I think this beer succeeds as an attempt to showcase tasty, complex, interesting, balanced fruit flavors and aromas in an IPA. I'm looking forward to picking up more of this one.

UPDATE: Had this again recently. It's a bit drier/less sweet than I remember, and still very good.
