Very Good
TropiCannon Citrus IPATropiCannon Citrus IPA
Notes: Our brand new citrus IPA is exploding with bright citrus aroma and flavor. Creating an exciting new variation on our flagship Loose Cannon, TropiCannon clocks in at the same 7.25%ABV as its cousin, but packs a full blast of blood orange, grapefruit, mango and lemon flavor. We've downplayed some of Loose Cannon's piney-ness and amped up the citrus by swapping Centennial and Palisade hops for Amarillo and even more Simcoe. We've introduced dried grapefruit, orange and lemon peel in the brewing process and added mango, blood orange and more grapefruit post-fermentation.

The beer pours a somewhat cloudy amber with a not long lasting head

Smell is superb, citrusy just like it should with the aroma of oranges

Taste is where this beer falls apart for me. The bitterness of the hops comes through but the strong taste of orange peel comes through. Wish it was the orange fruit itself, not the peel

Feel is okay but after the taste issue it doesn't really matter

Drain pour for me. The fruit flavor is way over the top. Seems artificial. Reminded me of the strong fruity scent in some public bathrooms. Thought I was drinking a urinal cake or something. Not good.

Transparent amber copper with a fizzy, moderate head.

I'm getting some not so subtle whiffs of, let me see here, Sunkist, Orange-Crush/Fanta/Faygo, Hi-C, and SunnyD, followed by an ever so delicate anvil to the skull of PEZ candy.

Tastes like an intentionally bittered Tang--just weird as hell.

Tons of carbonation easily supporting the head throughout. Aside from some minor bitterness, it's quite tangy, sweet and tart, obviously.

TropiCannon seems absolutely, 100% artificial. Unless they were seriously trying to make SpaceDrink.2, this is just ridiculous. I seriously doubt there are any real world food ingredients used to create these flavor and aroma profiles. Craft beer should pride itself in using real food as flavoring components. This is a disturbing trend.

Smells like oranges, oranges, and a little bit of orange. A little bit of a fermented/tangy note too.

Guess what it tastes like? In addition to the orange, there is a bit of spicey mango and red grapefruit. There is a siginificant malt base. Overall it is too sweet. A little more bitterness would do wonders for this one.

Is it possible Heavy Seas pushed the tropical thing a little too far? It smells very similar to Hi C, and taste is likewise similar to a carbonated tropical fruit punch. I'm not getting much of the ipa qualities (hops) shining through, and it feels very much like drinking some kind of tropical wine cooler. I guess this could be refreshing on a hot day, but i'm not digging it too much. I almost bought a six pack, and i'm sure I could have finished it, but i'm glad I bought a single because one is probably enough for me.

Not my cup of tea - reminds me of a orange crush cooler or something. Way too much in-your-face citrus, which buries anything more subtle and interesting that might be going on underneath.

Growler into a nonic pint glass.

Clean clear and bright copper colored brew with smooth moving bubbles. Modest white cap, no retention, spot lacing.

Smells of an overload of blood orange with a hint of grapefruit. No malt or alcohol is evident yet the aroma is sugary.

There's still too much blood orange but the flavor bounces back some thanks to the malt, grapefruit and other hop nuances.

The body is there but it's still too much like piece of fruit than an IPA.

For me, it could benefit from a bit less blood orange.

Poured from tap...Sweet tropical fruity smell that also came through in the taste. Small head with a little lacing. Nice golden color.
Well balanced level of hops. One of the better fruit flavored ipas I have had. Will definitely get again

Look: Slightly hazy. Orange-amber. Medium-sized, off-white head. Good lacing.
Smell: A powerful, sweet, orange-candy aroma leaps out of the glass. Melon and grapefruit aromas.
Taste: The taste is less sweet than the aroma -- more like bitter blood orange or grapefruit. The citrus bitterness leads into a hop bitterness that lingers for a while. Along with the hop bitterness at the end is a hint of sweet malt finish with orange and lemon. A bit of herbal hop spiciness can be detected in the aftertaste. I could detect mango as well, but only after it was pointed out. The bitterness and sweetness in this beer is very nicely balanced.
Feel: Medium-bodied and medium carbonation, bringing to mind a slightly pulpy grapefruit or orange juice.
Overall: This thing is a real citrus bomb, and although I recommend giving it a try, you may not like it unless you're looking for something with a ton of fruit/citrus. It's got a bit of a sweet/fruity mixed drink quality.

That said, I think this beer succeeds as an attempt to showcase tasty, complex, interesting, balanced fruit flavors and aromas in an IPA. I'm looking forward to picking up more of this one.

UPDATE: Had this again recently. It's a bit drier/less sweet than I remember, and still very good.

This is one of my go-to beers. I've recently gotten into the New England style IPA these past few months and this is what I compare all other beers of that style to. Yes the fruity taste is what hits you first and foremost. Some complain about that, but that's the point! You're not drinking this for a sour note or a bitter note, you want something that's a little bit sweet while not being overpowering, the super sweet and thick body of a stout, or the lack of body from "some fruity apple-type lady beer". No man, this is easy to drink, tasty, with the APV that will get you where you're going. It's one of my all-time favorite beers
