Heavy Seas Loose Cannon - American Hop3 AleHeavy Seas Loose Cannon - American Hop3 Ale

Brewed by:
Heavy Seas Beer
Maryland, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.25%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Burnished gold with a rich citrus hop aroma, it is wonderfully drinkable with a big hop flavor. We’ve knicknamed it Hop3 (hop cubed) ale to reflect the enormous amount of hops in this beer: over 3 pounds per barrel! It is hopped 3 ways: in the kettle, in the hop back, and dry hopped.

On tap at Green Turtle poured a beautiful light Amber with thick frothy head. Smell is fruity and pleasant. Taste is not as strong. Not that hoppy. Decent beer but not my favorite of this type.

12oz bottle poured into a Brew Gentlemen tulip glass:

Look: Pours a golden to amber/copper color with about an inch of head. Lacing is present with good retention.

Smell: Piney, floral, citrus, and some sweetness from the malt backbone coming thru.

Taste: Nice notes of citrus and pine! Some sweetness comes in from the malts. Also a bit of lingering bitterness.

Feel: Medium bodied.

Overall: Pretty solid IPA from Heavy Seas! Best beer I have had from them to date. I would revisit this one again!

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a frosty beer mug. The appearance is a pretty copper color with a medium sized white head. The aroma is nice with fruit, malt and hops. The taste is malt, fruit and some hops. This is a very smooth tasting beer with a very subtle kick. At 7.25% ABV....drink two of these and you will be feeling niiice.

Full disclosure to being biased to West Coast IPA's if not AZ IPA's. However, when in Maryland, try the local beer right? OK, not bad, but does this really have enough hops to be a third power? I don't see how unless they just reuse them from the prior batch. Easy to find a better IPA for less $. I'll drink the whole 6 pack over the few days I am here because I am cheap and it is OK, but a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale would be a better choice for less $.

12 oz. bottle poured into a nonic pint glass.

Poured a clear and bubbly amber with one plus finger of soft foamy nearly white head that lessened to the one quarter finger that remained for the duration of the pint. A moderate aroma of pine, floral and to a lesser extent, citrus hops. Crisp and bitter from front to back with tasty pine and citrus hoppy flavors coming in the middle, with a good balance of malted sweetness. Finishes slightly bitter and piney. Light in body but fuller than you would expect with medium to high carbonation. Dry and clean with a little bite from the carbonation.

To me this is a good representative IPA that I drink more than any other in part because it is very easy for me to get fresh. It is refreshing and goes down easy. The 7.25 ABV will sneak up on you.

12 ounce bottle poured into a tulip glass.
L--Clear, golden amber. Nice, thick, white head that lasted a while and left good lacing.
S--Sweet, hoppy, citrus scents.
T--Mmmmm....nice. A combination of tropical and citrus fruits.
F--Creamy. Heavier than I would have expected.
O--Very nice effort by those pirates at Heavy Seas. I'll definitely look for this one again.

Picked up a single from TW Arrowhead on 11-13-16 for $1.79. Bottled on 16214, best by 1-23-17. Brew stored in beer fridge since purchase.

Beer poured golden orange with a very nice white head.

Nose has hints of stone and citrus fruits, nice.

Taste is very well balanced between orange, grapefruit, and peach. Finish is mildly bitter.

Feel is medium bodied and refreshing.

Overall a very easy drinker that was pleasurable to have. Not a wow beer but enjoyable nonetheless.

Date on bottle states to enjoy before June 3, 2017. Poured into pint glass.

Pours nice copper, amber color with minimal white head. Head goes away pretty quickly leaving a ring.

Nose picks up floral notes and citrus fruits. Not much of anything else. Slightly sweet.

The taste is pretty light. First sip gives me little bitterness upfront with cracker in-between with some oranges and tropical fruit and finishes with bitterness at the end and lingers. Bitterness taste is more from a grapefruit. Flavors are really light and not pronounced. As it warmed up it became sweeter and you could start tasting pineapple and clementines. More of the sweeter fruits and still finishes bitter.

Light bodies with a really good level of carbonation. Finishes dry. Great body for this beer.

This tastes very similar to a session IPA but with an ABV of 7.3% that is nowhere to be tasted. It refreshes and you forget you're drinking a heavy beer so it can creep up on you. I won't be picking this up as a daily drinker but ok for the beach.

My first beer from Heavy Seas and I am impressed. Nothing special about the look, smell or feel. But this is certainly a tasty IPA. Think it is a mix of bitter and floral. Really good job

pours nice Amber orange with creamy head. I get some light cracker malt with faint grapefruit in the nose. taste is up front light cracker with noticeable grapefruit and light stone fruit layered by floral nuances. finishes very clean with no lingering off flavors. mouthfeel is very complimentary and coats the mouth with minimal carb. ive been wanting review this for a while because this was one of my first gateway beers into the ipa realm. I used to drink this stuff by the sixer and couldn't get enough. although my palate has been blasted by all the top new england ipa's this is a better than average easy drinker. it is well worth the price and although not top tier is a very solid offering.

12 oz. can

Pours slightly hazy deep amber orange with a creamy frothy white foam head. Smells like banana, pepper, clove-like spice, toasted malt, orange citrus, grapefruit, with earthy herbal grass and floral pine. Tastes like sweet toasted malt, tangerine, orange citrus, grapefruit, some peppery clove spice, banana, with bitter earthy herbal grass and floral pine. Feels medium-light bodied, slick and creamy with moderate carbonation. Overall an interesting IPA.

Clear copper color. Nice off white head. The nose is not as hoppy as I thought , but very well balanced. The taste is thick with hops, but again well balanced. Nice citrus.

This beer tastes how the bottle looks. A trippy take on a brew hopped 3 times. Best straight out of the bottle but if you must then pour it in a tulip. A nice bubbly white head that soon turns into a misty ring and misty puddle in the center that leaves a couple smeared lines parallel on the glass. Color is a golden amber. Taste is of citrus, centennial, and pine hops. Perfect beer when you plan on letting loose. A quick drink, not a sipper.

Poured into a pint glass. Slightly hazy medium golden color with a modest white head. Nice lacing though. Somewhat muted orange rind aroma and faint bready malt. Moderately bitter with a somewhat muddled taste. Not clearly citrus or piney. Definite earthy quality dry clean finish with a nice malt backbone.

From a bottle, pours a harvest gold with a thin head. Aroma is full of hops, citrus, and slight spiciness. Hops forward, with some nutty and grapefruit tartness. Surprisingly nice mouth feel (for an IPA) that is almost creamy. Interesting and I could drink this all night.

Look and smell nothing special. Flavor attacks the mouth - heavy hop and citrusy... Powerful flavor makes you go slow, savor it, and probably stop at one. Had on tap at BWI.

Heavy Seas Beer - Loose Cannon). 7.25% ABV. 3oz sample pour in mini mug.

Look: Golden body, with a nice creamy head.

Smell: Light citrus, resin, and hops.

Feel: Good light body, mild carbonation. Crisp and refreshing.

Taste: Identical to smell; light citrus backing a bold pine flavor with subtle hop bitterness.

Overall: Had at the Firkin Fest 2016 in Ashland, KY. I had never heard of this beer or the brewery, so I had to try it. Not disappointing at all, very refreshing with good flavor.

On tap at the hotel bar with dinner, pre-gaming before the BNA Party last week. Mostly clear light golden color with a decent bubbly white head. Earthy citrus and pine hop aroma and flavor with a solid bready light caramel maltiness to counter. Decent but old school feeling ipa.

Hop cubes is a good way to put in this copper-gold APA. Decent head. Citrus notes make this an enjoyable summer beverage. Smooth with nice bitterness in the finish. Medium-full bodied. Have to love hop flavor to enjoy this overhopped beer.

Bronzy-golden color, cream head. Nose dominated by oily hops. Nice flavor arc also dominated by hops, resinous and floral, but with malt backbone. Also well balanced. Could be bolder, but certainly good as it is.

tap pour, English IPA, malt profile is pleasant and tame hops are an appropriate foil. Aroma matches flavor, muted, but clean. Full-bodied finish. Good for the style.

Looks orange and amber, hearty and deep with 1/2" white head. Aroma was devoid of hops. Really? After all that hullaballoo on the label bragging on it?

Taste was that old school east coast tons of caramel and lightly hopped looking for balance kind of malty ipa. I felt ripped off after getting hyped by all the hop language and whatnot. Just was malty for the most part.

From a bottle, this is a nice-looking beer: moderately hazy orange with a finger of dense and creamy off-white foam. Plenty of lacing. Fine bubbles continue to rise up throughout the glass.

Smell is on the simple side: pine and sweet malt. Taste follows, with some citrus notes as well. Nicely balanced between bitter hops and malt, though the hops win out. Feel is a solid medium, hefty and almost chewable.

Overall this is a really good IPA. Just challenging enough to keep it interesting.
