Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
With a lightning strike of exotic hops, the Alpha Effect is a hazy and dank IPA thundering with juicy hop aroma and flavor. With a hefty 7%, the Alpha Effect has enough malt to balance the ridiculous amount of hops we used to create this category 5 monster. Hazy, but never muddy, this is an expertly brewed IPA. Take cover, the Alpha Effect is in effect!

Pours a hazy golden orange color with a tight, white head that leaves little bits of lacing.

Smells of floral and citrus hops.

Tastes of the bright hops upfront layered over a solid malt base. Hops lead off with notes of orange, tangerine, pine, and tropical fruits. This gives way to some sweet, caramel malts and toasted bread. Floral and minty hops add towards the end. Finishes with a bit of hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a solid IPA.

The eradication of The Bottle Backlog has created the possibility for many brewery horizontals, most notably New Belgium, but here comes one that is going to be a LOT of fun. I have known owner Hugh Sisson since he was the owner & brewer at Sisson's Brewpub in BAL before going on to open Heavy Seas. His head brewer is now Chris Leonard, former owner & brewer of the GEN Lafayette Brewpub in PHL & I once wrote a great Beer Pest piece about his (now ex-)wife, Kristen. As if all of that were not enough, I am a retired U.S. Navy sailor who spent a LOT of time aboard ships and underway, so nautically themed beers are right up my alley.

From the bottle: "With a lightning strike of exotic hops, the Alpha Effect is a hazy and dank IPA thundering with juicy hop aroma and flavor. Take cover!"; "Clean Water Fund [-] A portion of the proceeds from each case of beer we sell goes to help CleanWater.org, a national organization dedicated to protecting the quality of the water we drink and the water we use to brew. Can't make great beer without clean water! Finds from the sale of this beer go back to the region where it was purchased."

Note the prevalence of the word "hazy" with this one. I noticed the buildup/presence of some lees on the punt of my bottle, so I happily agitated the bottle & its contents before Pop!ping the cap. I don't do it as much as I used to, but a heavy-handed aggro pour can be fun & rewarding in its own way. This one decided to puff up like a fish, but I was not frightened away. Instead, I watched as it billowed into two-plus fingers of dense, rocky, tawny head with great retention that left equally dense, sticky lacing in its wake as it fell. The Deck Apes will be busy chipping that off with needle guns at our next liberty port! Color was solidly Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) and not only was it hazy, but I would say downright cloudy with evident floaties & a strong chance of showers in the afternoon. Wow! I am not a fan of this burgeoning style, but that is just me, plus clarity can be overrated as filtration strips away flavor. Onward! Nose smelled of mint - peppermint, wintergreen, spearmint, mint, baby, plus a nice base of caramel. Wow! Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but big, especially for the style. The taste was minty, resinous, sticky, slightly sweet with caramel and really, really yummy. That said, you had best like hops if you hope for a like experience. It was not bitter, or at least not overly bitter, but it was definitely hop-driven. I got a kind of powdery sensation in my mouth, suggesting that it was on the bitter (pun slightly intended) edge of saturation, especially concerning dry-hopping. Finish was dry, but more minty and slightly spicy than bitter. I still kept getting a powdery feel in my mouth and throat, though. Maybe a little less dry-hopping or a little bit of filtration may be in order, IMHO. YMMV.

This beer is blatantly labeled a "hazy ipa", obviously trying to cash in on the trend. It does pour hazy, but not the opaque orange juice look of some popular NE ipas. Light shines through pretty easily and I can see the bottom of my snifter as I get half way through it.

In terms of taste and aroma, it's a solid ipa. I wouldn't call it "juicy". There's definitely a grapefruit element to it but this beer leans more into the dank/grassy realm. It has a little of the yeasty bite that I sometimes get in turbid ipas, too. It is smooth and easy to drink with a crisp medium body.

Some people may buy this hoping for a mass produced new England style hazy juice bomb and will be disappointed, but this is a pretty decent ipa worth trying.

Came in a standard pint glass...well a hazed auburn infused lighter golden with a half finger bone white head atop.Very citric in the nose like of tangerine and orange juice with slight grassiness as well,a sweetish dough malt base underneath.Like the aromas the flavors are very citrusy with only light bittering, again a sweet dough maltiness underneath. It's good not real complex with it's hop flavors,it does drink well though for the size of it.

12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Pours a mildly hazed dull golden hued brew, great looking lacing all the way down. I decanted all but the last ounce, figured if it had settled out then there was no need to mix it back in. Juicy, piney, minty, floral hop nose and flavor. Ample bitterness with a long lingering taste. Hint of esters from the alcohol, just enough malt to hold this brew up. I much prefer their other IPAs, this was too bad though.

12 oz bottle from NC consumed near BB date.
Pours with a hazy amber body that has floating sediment and that's topped with a creamy, durable off-white head.
Bright fruity aroma and very fruity flavor. In fact, this is so fruity, juicy and fresh tasting that one might think it was made with added fruit juice.
Medium body and carbonation; semi-dry. Partly hidden alcohol.

Clipper City Brewing Co. "Heavy Seas The Alpha Effect"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BEST BY AUG0917" and sampled on MAY1617
$2 @ Weis Market #231, Conshohocken, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness (because it's easier): So is this Clipper City's stab at a NEIPA? It's just labeled a "HAZY IPA" but I think this is their jump onto the bandwagon. Good for them! It's definitely hazy - it's downright cloudy! But not like a "milkshake" beer, although there is a fair amount of visible sediment dropping out. Golden orange in color beneath a bright white head. Seemingly good head retention, and there's some lace formed already. Aroma... the aroma is at least half the battle here... bigger and brighter than I expected. Resinous and tropical. On the label they've called it "dank". I don't think that's the proper word to use given its definition, but everyone else uses it and I know what they mean, so I'll agree with what they're thinking it means. As it's sat it's lost some of that "dankness" and the tropical fruit has come out more: mango, peach, apricot, passion fruit, lychee, berry, melon - typical Citra and Mosiac notes, fortunately two of my favorite hops right now, at least for this style. Hmm, I wonder, can you really do a NEIPA without at least one of them? A little bit piney as well. Anyway, moving on... the flavor is just as good. Very juicy, but balanced and held in check by the malt beneath it. It's also a bit floral. I'm not finding the alcohol except for a little bit of spiciness in the finish. Of course it's only 7% so that's as it should be. Solidly bitter, clocking in around 70 IBUs which is right on for an IPA like this; and that probably adds to the spiciness in the finish as well. If there's anything I'd ask it'd be that the flavor was a little wider, but then it wouldn't be as drinkable, and it probably wouldn't appear as juicy, and then it'd also be heading towards double IPA territory so I should probably just take that back. What else? Medium bodied and crisp then smooth. Nicely balanced. Overall it's pretty damned good, it just lacks that magic that some beers have. And in the end I certainly wouldn't call it a NEIPA... "HAZY IPA" fits it just fine.

I tried this at Kickbacks in JAX. The beer poured a slightly hazy golden with white head that left a spotty lace. The scent was had hints of juicy fruit. The taste not evenly balanced and not overly easy to drink. The mouthfeel was lighter in body good carbonation. Overall it was a so so beer.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is a murky golden-yellow color with medium sized white head. The aroma is full of citrus and some hops. The taste is a nice blend of citrus and hops. An outstanding beer.

Very basic hopped up ipa. Thicker I think do to the hops? I like Heavy Seas clean water fund. Cool idea

Pours a cloudy golden-yellow color with average head and hop particles floating throughout. Aroma is citrusy, especially with fresh squeezed oranges and a bit of lemon. Taste is tingly, has a good amount of citrus and citrus peel with a big amount of hop bitterness. Finish is good with the hop bitterness and citrus peel lingering the longest

So I guess they missed the point that for a heavy dry hop you don't need more of a malt bill. Unbalanced, oniony, too malty, definitely not enjoyed or recommended
