The Heavy Seas weizen doppelbock wheat beer "Hang Ten" just came in this week. I was told there wasn't a lot to go around, so it was something I had to try. I'm a big fan of wheat beers, doppelbocks, and of course Heavy Seas.
Upon pouring, the aromas are leaping from the glass at me. The pour reveals a very dark rusty colored beer, with a light fluffy head. The foam is a light beige tone, and not super thick, but very fluffy and pillowy.
A little bit a swirling creates a ton of foam with such tiny bubbles I'm mildly amazed. Its sticking to the glass a little bit, creating some subtle lacing.
With my nose in the glass the first thing I get is the alcohol. I'm not surprised, considering the label declares the "Hang Ten" at 10% abv. This might be three highest alcohol wheat beer I've ever had. After I get past the booze aromas, I'm getting some soft wheat aromas that reminds me of the Weihenstephan Hefeweis. I'm getting virtually no hops at all, with some heavy malty sweets. There's definitely a bit of spice, but its tough to pick out any distinct aromas underneath the sweet wheaty malts.
With my first sip, it tastes great, but I'm a little disappointed. It tastes much more like a good hefe than it does a doppelbock. There is some mild spice, but like the aromas, dominated by malty sweetness. The "Hang Ten" goes down super smooth, its as fluffy in the mouth as it was when I first poured. Seriously, it's weird, it feels like cotton candy!
Although I'm a little disappointed comparing this to other doppelbock brews, the "Hang Ten" quite enjoyable. I'm a huge fan of the "Vitus" from Weihenstephan, for its body, spice, and drinkability; but the Hang Ten is very tasty. Yes Chris, I used the word "tasty" in that sentence.
So, is the Hang Ten an incredible version of a doppelbock? Maybe not. But I'm quite happy with my beer tonight. Try a bottle and tell me what you think.

Poured into a weizen glass a hazed chesnut brown with a large clingy off white head,full aromas definent clove and smoke aromas with hints of green apple that become more pronounced on the palate.Flavors start out a bit over the top with a big green apple presence as well a firm toastiness lies underneath,the bold spicieness is a bit much after awhile the it really does a job on the taste buds.Its rough around the edges in my mind not as refined as the Eisenbahn Vigorosa I had earlier in the day to me its a case of almost to much going on

A 4pack from Tully's, with a drink by Mar08 on the label. Amber in color, with a small head and some nice carbonation. Not much in the nose, mild malt/grain aroma. The malt really came through in the taste, as well as a little bit of caramel. Nice depth, very filling and satisfying.

This pours a hazy chestnut brown body with a rather small beige head. Some minimal lacing is left on the glass. Aroma is spicy yeast, wheat, and fruity banana. Medium body and carbonation. Taste is malty dark fruits, wheat, clove, spicy yeast, caramel, and bitter earthy hops. Alcohol makes an appearance here but is generally subdued for the high abv. Nice example of the style and a pleasant winter sipper.

Appearance after a nice vigorous pour a thick beige head forms and as it dwindles it clings to the glass it floated above the glass held together quite nicely forms even lacing, the body is mahogany deep brown amber with a clouded haze going on from all of the yeast contents in the bottle.

Aroma spiced banana bread right off the bat in the forefront and all from the authentic yeast strain they used some tartness is evident as well some tart apple and raisin notes flow with a spicy herbal finish. There smells like spices have been added but I know it's just the yeast characteristics pretty wild, mildly funky with bready yeast notes a plenty.

Flavor a bit alcoholic is something I noted early on in the first few sips but the spicy yeast notes are still playing some ripened fruit notes tart apples and raisins with caramelized brown sugar and doughy banana bread elements nice altogether. Overall I feel the alcohol overrides some of those flavors that are trademark of the style it might overcome this and blend better with a bit of age, I'm always intrigued by the Heavy Seas line and once again they served up a good beer.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied slightly syrupy with a searing alcohol finish on the palate carbonation is alright not as fine and effervescent as it's German counterparts but a decent shot at it.

Drinkability is okay but really I would limit myself to one of these I think it would start to sit way too heavy on the palate after one of these, actually towards the end of this sample I'm starting to think wow I want something else. Not a good sign for drinkability but does it make you crave a better Weizen doppelbock, sure.

Appearance - Cloudy mahogany brown color. Thick beige head. Very little retention or lacing.

Smell - Banana, spices, yeast, apples, raisins, and caramel.

Taste - After an initial tart apple and banana flavor a caramel malt with raisins comes in. The spices and yeast are next. Alcohol is a bit overpowering.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied. A little syrupy. Not much carbonation but it's there.

Drinkability - Decent beer, but it is a bit syrupy and I would imagine drinking more than one at a time would be difficult.

12oz brown bottle with "Best Before" date notched into label. The bottle has a bit of yeast sludge at the bottom so pour carefully or eat it up, whatever your preference.

A: Pours a muted brown bordering on amber with a smallish white cream colored head. The haze can be attributed to the bottle advertised "Unfiltered Wheat Beer".

S: Caramel malts, bananas, a bit of spice, a smattering of alcohol, and, wait a second, I know I'm forgetting something, what is it, right, wheat! It's more of an earthy wheat rather than grassy. Also, this does not come off as a 10 percenter, but you know your in for something special.

T: More of the nose, although the order is a bit different. The front of the palate starts with spices and wheat followed by the caramel malts then the alcohol dominates leaving a dark rum banana aftertaste. Quite nice.

M: Body is moderate and silky smooth. Light on the carbonation but it does not hurt this beer.

D: A slow drinker, I'd be good for 2 in a session. Pair it with a chocolate dessert.

Ten percent ABV is a stumbling block to taste... we shall "sea"...pours a thick brown, unfiltered with a short head in a weizenbock glass...chips of sediment apparent in the lower glass...a bit of carbonation with consistent lacing....malt and bready yeast aromas--more bock than weizen...when chewed, burrows into the lower back of the tongue--a bit of alcoholic burn too, aggressive at the top of tongue...a nice mixture of heavy malt sweetness and yeast...provides a punch and a thirst-quenching cool at the same time...the alcohol may be a slight turn-off..okay, it is...the beer challenges a neophyte beer rater--the style itself is unique...I find this batch of C.C. brew reviews in general to hit on the theme of malt and alcohol...another beer I would drink again, if not recommend for a discussion starter

Definitely not a summer wheat beer, don't let the "weizen" confuse you. This one packs a wallop, and is probably better saved for early fall. Fairly clear (for unfiltered) amber red color, with a finger of head on top, lacing pretty nicely.
Definite banana aroma (there's my wife calling me crazy again), some caramel malt too. Chewy flavor, reminded me of homebrewing, and popping the occasional grain into my mouth. So, mostly malt flavor with some banana, and plenty of alcoholic esters giving an extra bite.
Pretty solid, I'll revisit when it's not 100 degrees outside.

Ken's bottle. Cloudy grapefruit with big bubbly head. Above verage mouthfeel. A story in bannana, and I get the yeast. Looking for more interesting in the style than a sweet bannana sundae, but still enjoyable, and I am allergic to bannanas and not a fan of their smell. Also do we need the abv s high? Good for what it is.

12oz bottle is labelled best if purchased before February 2008. Served cold and poured into a large Harpoon UFO Hefeweizen glass. No citrus on this one, thanks. Beer is dark muddy amber with a moderate dark tan head. Smells malty and slightly wheaty, like a bock bier. Unlike the other offerings from Clipper City / Heavy Seas I've had so far, this one actually does appear to have a fair amount of particulate matter suspended in the beer (deliberately by me as I poured it), in agreement with the warning label on the neck of the bottle.

Aventinus doppelbock ale is one of my favorite beers, so this beer has a lot to measure up against. The beer is very strong. On a hot day like today, while I'm indoors enjoying my AC, it's a little bit perplexing to have a wheat beer which is also strong. There are some big flavors of grain, although not necessarily a typical malty sweetness. The main thing I notice is the slight sourness of the wheat -- rather than asking for a complementary slice of lemon, this beer seems to provide its own. That's a good thing.

The neck label calls this a class German-style weizen bock, while the main label reads, vertically, Wiezen Doppelbock. I would say the latter is more accurate: this is strong, especially if the rated 10% ABV is to be believed. This is not a classic German style, it's definitely American. That said, while there may be some hops in there, but if so they're entirely in the background; and the carbonation is quite moderate. The richness and spice could even belong to a barley wine, but I wouldn't want to give the impression that this resembles one. Those flavors wouldn't belong here, but the richness works pretty well here. I don't pick up on much banana, which is good, because I am NOT a fan.

On the whole this is one of my more preferred beers from my trip to Clipper City, Maryland so far. A decent beer if you can find it and want to try something different, but only if you're a fan of strong ales and wheat beers. Not so much for less experienced or adventurous beer drinkers (why doesn't everyone like hefeweiss? it seems so accessible to me...)

This is my favorite beer of the Heavy Seas line-up, not that it's the best, but it's just my preference.

The nose is so rich and complex, with notes of peppery spice greeting you, followed by clove, perhaps something along the lines of nutmeg (although I know there's none in there!), a hint of slightly vinous tartness like dark red fruit or wine, dark fruit skins (plum, perhaps some grape, figs), and a note of dark sugar. As it warms some green banana becomes apparent as well. (And hopefully, the vinous character has to do with pH and yeasty fruitiness and not some underlying infection that will later grow to become something more than charming!).

The flavor is less peppery/spicy, and much fuller with loads of dark fruit. It's decidedly wheaty, but the yeasty fruitiness over-rides it enough that you don't think of it as a wheat beer, but more like a cross between a Belgian dubbel and an English barleywine with weizen yeast in play. Wow!

If there's a flaw to this beer it's that it's kind of sharp and triangular in it's flavor, rather than round (although I like that! Keep in mind that Guinness is kind of out there too!); and the head is hindered by the alcohol. I love the ruby-accented dark amber/copper body though!

I haven't seen this on tap in my area, hopefully I'll get to try some in D.C. a couple of days from now. If it's different I'll post another review. Definitely a charming, kind of unique beer. Well worth trying!

Pours a hazy deep ruby-brown with an average size quickly diminishing beige head. Aroma’s sweet and yeasty with lots of dark fruit, some toasted malt, light hops, banana and chocolate -- there’s lots going on there. Flavour, in no particular order: There’s chocolate, banana, quite a lot of alcohol, toasted malt, dark fruit, brown sugar, some hops and finally, an alcoholic burn in the finish. Medium bodied, syrupy mouthfeel.

Poured from a bomber into an Aventinus glass. Vintage 2011

Two fingers of cafe colored head, deep almost opaque caramel body. This retreats into some good surface memory and some light lacing.

Smells like a weizen doppelbock should, but a bit chocolatey. Very vaguely like one of those chocolate oranges you get at Christmas. And very faint note of gin.

Flavor is nice; wheat and some maltiness, and tastes 'German' enough. There's a bit of alcohol burn to it and some faint steeliness that doesn't belong. Overall not as bold (or even as good) as I was hoping, but I probably set the bar pretty high. NB: turns out this one needs to warm up a bit-- this brings out some more of that chocolate-orange richness.

Mouthfeel is pretty standard, and nice; thick, a bit creamy, but not very carby.

It's all right, but I kept hoping for it to be better than Aventinus in some way (I guess I hold that as a gold standard) and in that respect it kinda fell flat. However, this one is probably rife with potential for aging, and the one I tried was quite young. Who knows what a couple of years could do for this?

A: Standard pour yields a .5 finger creamy, dense, egg shell white head with good retention. Beer is a slightly cloudy mahogany. Lacing is stringy and spotty with good cling. A nice looking beer.

S: Nose is interesting. Citrus, lactose, and some nice spice notes. Slightly sour overtones remind me of yogurt and infected imperial stout. Appetizing though.

T: Opens tart. Orange, peach, prunes, yogurt, and some lychee. Spicy towards the middle with some orange rind bitterness hiding in the back. Still tart and actually intensifies a bit as it lingers in the mouth. Tea leaves come out a bit towards the end. Finish is tea, dried autumn leaves, and tart cherries and yogurt. Aftertaste is slightly bitter dried leaves. The flavor profile of this one is way out of left field. Not all bad, not what I expected, but decent.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Weird because this one's lively and abrasive yet heavy and oily at the same time. Heavy in the mouth and substantial going down. Coats the palate. Finish is messy and with slightly lingering aftertaste. A stark contrast from your regular hefe.

O: So this has replaced drinkability... which means that the overall comments I always write here is now finally appropriate. A very interesting take on the style, I can't tell if this beer is supposed to taste like this, or if its infected. Either way, very interesting and worth trying if only for an experience of the style.

Dark, burnt orange with minimal head, and no carbonation. Banana esthers, clove and nutty raisin for nose, and is consistent with the taste. On the first sip, the alcohol is upfront. Maybe a tad hot.Thick & full-bodied, the alcohol only further inhibits a quick drink. This is a very nice beer, but suited more for a nightcap or with a meal. It's pretty big. Well crafted and recommended.

Poured from a 12-ounce bottle into my 22-ounce weizen glass.

Appearance: Decent. Hang Ten pours a vaguely cloudy mahogany. It's not translucent, and there's not much head to speak of -- probably due to the high ABV.

Smell: Kind of like a sharper, twangier, more aggressive Aventinus. Dried fruits (especially cherries), wheaty funk, and toffee are present.

Taste: Difficult. I'm assaulted by wheaty sourness/twang, followed quickly by sour cherries, clay, alcohol, and cooking sherry. The yeast is perceptible, but not particularly prominent in the flavor. This is not my favorite weizenbock by a wide margin. The taste is just...extreme.

Mouthfeel: Well-carbonated and reasonably thick in the mouth. Unfortunately, the face-meltingly strong flavor distracts the drinker from the beer's mouthfeel. I can't separate one from the other (flavor/mouthfeel), in this case.

Drinkability: Average at best. The 10.00% ABV is a lot to contend with, and the flavor doesn't mask that well enough to allow more than one bottle at a time. Maybe this stuff is better in colder weather. As it is, it's not very good, and I'm now wondering what I'm going to do with several more bottles of Hang Ten.

A- Best before Nov 2010 notched on label. Pours a cloudy dark brownish amber color with an off-white head.

S- The aroma is a lot of very sweet malt and bananas with some esthers as well. There's a lot of alcohol in the nose, something that a little age would probably help mellow things out a bit.

T- The taste like the aroma is sweet from all the malt with a lot of banana flavors (almost like banana bread) and a good dose of alcohol in the finish.

M- The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation.

D- The sweetness and high alcohol makes this one a pretty slow sipper. I think this one is a little hot when fresh but could benefit greatly with a year or so. Worth a shot.

Looks like iced tea. Thin white head that is gone quickly.

Smells good, like a combination of chocolate and licorice.

Taste is very complex, so many things going on it's hard to dinstinguish one taste from the next. Licorice seems to be the most prevalent.

Very much of a neutral feel in the mouth, nothing dominates til the slight warming from the alcohol in the finish.

It's got a unique taste to it that makes me want to drink more, but at 10% alcohol, I probably shouldn't.

Hang Ten pours a dark copper/bronze color. It's hazy, and has a distinct burgundy appearance with backlighting. A soft, off-white head sits on top, and stands about a finger and a half tall. It's quick to recede to a surface covering, and leaves a moderate coat of sticky lace trailing down the glass.

The nose is alright. It's a little sweet and malty up front. It has a grainy, earthy scent that permeates throughout. Clove and pepper spices are noted, but are more subtle than strong. Banana is definitely in the mix and smells nice. Yeast plays a rather prominent role. It complements the other scents very well. Alcohol is noticeable. Perhaps a little more than it should be.

The flavor is a little better than the nose. Enough to trigger a score bump. The malt base is sweet and brown-esque. Spices are stronger in the mix here. Clove and pepper are notable. Banana works really well in this one and complements the clove flavor nicely. Very well done. Yeast is rather pronounced throughout. Nonetheless, it has a nice flavor and adds something positive. Alcohol is a little too prominent. It has a warming effect, and isn't too far from hot. It finishes spicy with a touch of banana and alcohol heat.

Hang Ten has a medium body. Carbonation is mid-range. It has a rather smooth feel and goes down really easy for a double digit abv beer. Drinkability is good. The flavor here is pretty good and I'm enjoying the bomber.

Clipper City's one of those breweries that's been really hit and miss for me. This one's definitely more hit than miss. The only slight misstep might be that the alcohol comes through a little too strong. Honestly, it'd be just fine at 8%, rather than 10%. Other than that, it's good stuff. I'm a Weizenbock fan, and this is a pretty good one. Worth checking out.

I find this to be one of the better Heavy Seas brews, though it still has room for improvement. It follow a lot of the same lines as Aventinus with the heavy, sweet wheat along with dark fruits and a touch of spice. This beer, however, isn't quite as refined or complex. Individual flavors take hold of the beer and don't allow much else on your palate at times. Also, I found a very slight mustard note in the back that would point toward improper sanitation. Still, all things considered this is a good weizenbock and worth trying.

Pours a murky brown with an off-white head that doesn't leave a lot of lacing.

The smell is really awful. It's like a funky combination of bananas and soy sauce.

The flavor is a little bit better than the smell, but still has a very obvious funk to it. It's as if they got ahold of synthetic Bavarian yeast. It doesn't taste like an authentic weizenbock. It just tastes off. Far too sweet. Imagine an alcohol-soaked banana Laffy Taffy covered in caramel. That's what you're working with here. Dios mio.

Mouthfeel is very creamy and the beer has a dry finish. This is definitely the area in which the beer excels the most.

Drinkability is pretty fucking low. After having Clipper City's Holy Sheet -- which is pretty tasty, and a decent stab at a Belgian strong dark -- I was expecting similar results from Hang Ten. Seriously, this is some disappointing shit. I only paid $2 for a single, so it's not like I'm losing for trying this. I'm just bummed out that this stuff sucks so much. I honestly can't believe that this crap is pulling a B+ right now. Yeesh.

I'm sure I've rxd this in trade before, but no review is showing & I picked up a 4 pack in NC, so here goes...

Pours amber on the bottom the glass& chestnut on the top when looking down, caramel throughout when held to the light with a finger of tan head.. No head retention & no much more lacing

s: Bananas (ripe & green), cloves

T: Green bananas, slight lemon signature & cloves up front. More bananas, slight apricot & plum notes plus a touch of astrigency, cinamon apples & breadyness as this warms, plus a hint of warming booze. Finishes dry, with much green banana & cloves & some warming booze, came close to a 4.0

MF: Semi-chewy, low carbonation, slight stickyness, plus warmth

Drinks fairly easy for the style & ABV, a nice entre' to the style, but I've had better weizenbocks to be sure
