12 oz Poured into snifter

Ripe fruits and sweet malts. No alcohol whatsoever. Slight sparkling apple cider but mostly sweet bready malts and fruit.

SOoo easy to drink. Probably my favorite clipper city/ Heavy seas beer. Too bad they retired it. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?

Gonna stock up on bombers before I never get to taste this beer again.

-Just tried a 2011 bottle I had been aging and it was fantastic. So sad that it was my last bottle. I believe it aged incredibly well.

deep ruby in color with a decent amount of head which quickly diminished.

smells of cherries, honey, bourbon. strong booze smell.

taste is a bit tart of fruit .. cherries and oak, strong initial taste of booze which turns to a sweet caramel like flavor. very reminiscent of innis and gunn rum cask ale.

medium body mild carbonation.. slightly creamy, a bit heavy on the booze causing a nice warmth.

this beer aged fairly well.. i think the store i got it from has a few more - maybe i'll pick up a few and give them a few more years and see how they get.

The Heavy Seas weizen doppelbock wheat beer "Hang Ten" just came in this week. I was told there wasn't a lot to go around, so it was something I had to try. I'm a big fan of wheat beers, doppelbocks, and of course Heavy Seas.
Upon pouring, the aromas are leaping from the glass at me. The pour reveals a very dark rusty colored beer, with a light fluffy head. The foam is a light beige tone, and not super thick, but very fluffy and pillowy.
A little bit a swirling creates a ton of foam with such tiny bubbles I'm mildly amazed. Its sticking to the glass a little bit, creating some subtle lacing.
With my nose in the glass the first thing I get is the alcohol. I'm not surprised, considering the label declares the "Hang Ten" at 10% abv. This might be three highest alcohol wheat beer I've ever had. After I get past the booze aromas, I'm getting some soft wheat aromas that reminds me of the Weihenstephan Hefeweis. I'm getting virtually no hops at all, with some heavy malty sweets. There's definitely a bit of spice, but its tough to pick out any distinct aromas underneath the sweet wheaty malts.
With my first sip, it tastes great, but I'm a little disappointed. It tastes much more like a good hefe than it does a doppelbock. There is some mild spice, but like the aromas, dominated by malty sweetness. The "Hang Ten" goes down super smooth, its as fluffy in the mouth as it was when I first poured. Seriously, it's weird, it feels like cotton candy!
Although I'm a little disappointed comparing this to other doppelbock brews, the "Hang Ten" quite enjoyable. I'm a huge fan of the "Vitus" from Weihenstephan, for its body, spice, and drinkability; but the Hang Ten is very tasty. Yes Chris, I used the word "tasty" in that sentence.
So, is the Hang Ten an incredible version of a doppelbock? Maybe not. But I'm quite happy with my beer tonight. Try a bottle and tell me what you think.

M - Full bodied, spiced and warming.

O - A sweet and spicy doppelweiss, tastes a bit young.

2010 Vintage! Served from bottle into a Two Brothers Ebel's Weiss Weizen glass. Poured red-orange with a one finger light tan head that subsided to half a finger quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, banana, wheat, floral, and alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, banana, wheat, metallic, floral, bread, caramel, and alcohol. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was an okay brew. Nothing on this brew really stood out to me to make it anything above ordinary. I was not really a big fan of the metallic and alcohol flavor combination going on in this at all. While it was not terrible it was not life altering either. Worth trying, but I would try to do so out of another vessel.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Paulaner weizen glass.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy, dark brown color with a large, frothy head that dissipates slowly and leaves nice lacing.

Smell: Smells wheaty and yeasty with a bit of maltiness. Strong banana flavors as well.

Taste: Very malty up front with notes of dark fruit and caramel. Finishes highly alcoholic with a continued malty/yeasty flavor. The finish, however, is so alcoholic it actually burns slightly and covers up most of what's there. Call me a pussy, but this beer might burn a bit much going down...

Mouthfeel: Full-bodied, almost creamy, but with a nice carbonation.

Overall: Whew, this one'll knock your socks off; it definitely earns its "Heavy Seas" name. It's clearly a well-made beer but the high alcohol content makes it difficult to really enjoy. Normally, I find that most high-alcohol beers have strong flavors to compensate for the alcoholic "burn". This one lets the alcohol get the better of it, I think. Worth a shot, just be careful.

Served in a chilled Palm tulip glass at Semolina.

A: Dark and rather immune to light. A cheery brown, verging on blood-black. Inch of creamy head. Impressive.

S: Grapes. Booze. Brandy? A hint of tartness, but none of wheat. Candy sugar; Belgian sweetness.

T: Grapes. Rinds. Sweet alcohol. Fruity tartness as well. Great flavour. Enjoyable, but clearly strong enough to mean business.

M: Not thin, but somehow...lacking. Little carbonation. Sweet thickness isn't *entirely* pleasant.

O: Great beer! -- although I love Heavy Seas. Sweet-strong, fruity-forceful, warming-strong. Interesting beer and definitely worth trying.

A - deep reddish muddy color; thin head has shiny, rainbow inflected colors (soap on glass?)
S - sweet malt and vegetable with light herbs(what herb i dunno)
T - malty, slightly earthy vegetable, yeast; toffee, sweet finish
M - soft and smooth as expected from cask; sweet finish
D - solid but not excitable; a little too much vegi for me; nice to try but would not seek out again

[Best served in a Weizen glass]

The pour was a cloudy medium chestnut brown with the head being rather large (3-4 fingers), a frothy light tan and fully diminishing with fair lacing.

It had a sweet aroma to it that started with a toasted straw malt and a large dose of a sweet doughy yeast with notes of banana, dried fruit caramel and a strong scent of alcohol.

The taste was moderately sweet and malty with a nice caramel note at first then became a little sour with a very strong yeast flavor that had hints of some dried fruit and a heavy alcohol presence at the end. The flavor hung around for a good long time, which most definitely enhanced the drinking experience.

Mouthfeel was just a smidgen below medium in body with the texture being thick and creamy and having a slightly dry finish and a mild carbonation.

Overall an interesting mix of styles, but I got to say it works so well I will definitely be having it again.

A- Dark, murky, muddy river bottom. Small fizzy head that fades quickly but leaves a bit of lacing.

S- Chocolate covered raisins, yeasty raisin challah bread, ripe banana, clove and cinnamon. Nice, but nothing overwhelming.

T- Banana nut bread, chocolate and dark fruit. Has some hints of aged rum, sour grapes and chinese five spice. Nice little alcohol burn.

M- Yeasty breadiness never leaves. Decent carbonation and alcohol taste. Neither are overwhelming. Medium bodied with nice raisin bread flavor that really sticks around.

O- I honestly don't have alot of things to compare this to. Maybe Aventinus, but that's in a class all it's own. Really nice, bready and drinkable. I'd have this again... high abv, good price, and really nice drinking.

Live review. Poured from the 22 oz. bottle that I bought at Giant Eagle in Painesville, Ohio a few days ago for $6.99 into my Brewery Ommegang gold rimmed Westvleteren style goblet. No “best by” date observed by me but “2011” prominently printed on the right side of the label.

A Very dark caramel opaque body with a light brown dense, creamy head that sticks very well to the inside of the glass. Really, the look cannot be improved in my opinion. 5.0

S A great, big malt sweetness with banana and cloves lingering about. Really, exactly the smell that I was hoping for! 4.5

T The taste is directly related to the smell. Explosions of sweet malt with a nice accompanyment of the banana and cloves. This is a big, tasty treat and precisely what I was hoping for when I saw this label in the store. There is a burn of alcohol but it comes mid taste and it is escorted along with that big, sweet malt taste so it is fairly well hidden. I did not detect that until the 3rd or 4th sip. 4.5

M Big, thick and beautiful, just the kind of mouthfeel that I enjoy from this style. 5.0

D/O Well I am only going to be able to have one of these but what a great ride while it lasts. I think that it is very competitively priced as well, driving up the drinkability and the likelihood that I will be buying more of it. Bravo! 4.0

Picked up a 22oz bomber in a trade with Dawson's Liquor in Severna Park, MD and poured it into a hotel room rocks glass (not traditional glassware but its all that was available at the time) - thanks fellas!

A: Pours a hazy burnt orange, almost rootbeer brown hue, with a thin tan head that dissipates quickly leaving good lacing in my glass from start to finish.

S: A bit underwhelming overall, but what comes through is sweet and bready, very malty, cinnamon raisin toast with a very faint trace of grassy hop on the back end.

T: Pretty much on point with the nose but the hop character is completely lost in the mix, which isn't a major flaw for the style, but the nose suggested there may be some nice hop in the flavor.

M/D: Nothing special here - chewey and slightly overcarbonated. I'm impressed with the lack of booziness for a 10%'r but the malty sweetness of this brew is a bit overwhelming and difficult to drink. I honestly couldn't finish this one.

I was expecting a typical banana and clove weizenbock with some kick, but there's more here than just that. It's sweet like any doppelbock, but the booze really stands out, like in an eisbock. Don't get me wrong...the rum-like alcohol notes do not overwhelm and work pretty well here. Another surprise was the raisin-like flavors that seemed a little out of place. I associate that flavor profile more with Belgian dubbels rather than German doppels.

This is definitely an experience and a pretty good one at that. Pour into a weizen glass and your eyes will be satisfied. Down the whole thing yourself and you'll not be unhappy.

A: Nice robust caramel colored head with a deep rich brownish body with some amber back ground color.
S: The beer has a good wheat bready malt aroma with some nice hoppy undertones that combine to give it a fruitiness.
T: Very good bready doughy malt flavor with some nice banana and spiciness under the layers of malt flavor
D/O: Very crisp and strong beer. Drinkable while still presenting a strong sense of alcohol. A very good interpretation of the style.

Poured from a bomber into an Aventinus glass. Vintage 2011

Two fingers of cafe colored head, deep almost opaque caramel body. This retreats into some good surface memory and some light lacing.

Smells like a weizen doppelbock should, but a bit chocolatey. Very vaguely like one of those chocolate oranges you get at Christmas. And very faint note of gin.

Flavor is nice; wheat and some maltiness, and tastes 'German' enough. There's a bit of alcohol burn to it and some faint steeliness that doesn't belong. Overall not as bold (or even as good) as I was hoping, but I probably set the bar pretty high. NB: turns out this one needs to warm up a bit-- this brings out some more of that chocolate-orange richness.

Mouthfeel is pretty standard, and nice; thick, a bit creamy, but not very carby.

It's all right, but I kept hoping for it to be better than Aventinus in some way (I guess I hold that as a gold standard) and in that respect it kinda fell flat. However, this one is probably rife with potential for aging, and the one I tried was quite young. Who knows what a couple of years could do for this?

Complex flavor of dark fruit, chocolate, and even a hint of smoke. It has a rich mouthfeel from the wheat and it tastes at least as dark as it looks, but also carries a well balanced crisp fruit flavor from beginning through the middle and even after the sip.

Don't miss the fact that this delicious beverage is 10%abv! However, I was surprised - and probably should have been scared - by how easy this 10 percenter is to drink!

Not cloying or harshly high on alcohol fumes. The creepy surfer skull label is deceptive because this smooth treat is neither scary nor comical.

This could be a great match for bbq pork!

Purchased at Hop City Craft Beer store in ATL on a work trip. If you're in the area - check it out. Poured into a pint glass. Yup, a regular ol faithful.

A ruby brown colored beer settled into the glass, and left a cm of foam around the top. Very odd willow-tree-esque lacing was left after the first few sips.

Smells of sweet, wheaty characteristics. Light malt nose, slightly fruity - smells like a german.

Taste is a strange wheat mixture of banana, clove, and awkward spices. I will admit that for 10%, the alcohol is pretty well masked. Just pokes through a bit in the finish with a small burn and a tinge of spice.

The beer has a creamy, medium mouthfeel. It is lightly carbonated.

To be honest, I'm about ready to give up on Clipper City/Heavy Seas. After the dismal outing of their Vanilla Porter offering (which i was REALLY looking forward to), this Weizen Dopplebock left a lot to be desired. Overall, just an average beer that I wouldn't reach for again.

22 oz bomber at 45 degrees into a 20 oz mug.

A: It pours a deep mahogany-red color with two frothy inches of off-white head that has average retention but excellent lacing.

S: Cherries, strong yeastiness, sweet maltiness, and some grass.

T: Caramel maltiness, sweet dark fruits, a little tart cherry flavor, and some grassy yeastiness.

M: The body is medium-thick with slighly below-average carbonation and a slighly syrupy texture.

O: This is okay; it would be much better with a little complexity and if it wasn't so sweet.

A murky, cloudy dark brown with copper hints in the light with a thick,creamy tan head that last a while and leaves nice walls of lace. The smell is of ripe bananas, caramel, brown sugar, with hints of vanilla and faint whisps of spice. Cinnamon and faint clove, perhaps some nutmeg. A bit too sweet on the taste with loads of ripe banana, toffee, caramel, and brown sugar, hints of cinnamon and spice, and a background of earthy hops that faintly make an appearance. Taints of vanilla and butterscotch. A little bit of booze burn. The body is creamy and medium. Overall a nice and easy to drink beer.

Poured a very clear and very bright golden yellow with a large three finger deep head of white foamy lace. Some of the most visible carbonation I have ever seen streaming up off of this one. Just an absolute ton of carbonation refilling the head every moment.

Aroma was light, there was lots of grassy grain like smells in hear with a decent enough amount of yeast thrown in for good measure.The flavor was brilliant, full of life and grain for that matter. A very Belgian like flavor, witha good amount of light fruit like yeast and hints of pears and apples mixed in among the various grain like flavors. very light with huge carbonation. This was so amply carbonated I do not even know where t begin. Just a great light feel and smooth, crisp, clean finish. Really a winner here for sure. Very light bright flavors mixed in with a ton of carbonation to give it just that right feel really made this a winner. I could have easily had a few.

Overall I thought this was excellent. Really a great beer and something that I think everyone should try. \

Poured into a Scheider Weisse glass.

A- Pours a cloudy brown body with a thin 1 finger pillowy head, but it shows some very good retention. Not showing too much lace, but that's because the head stays for so long.

S- Sweet off the bat, bubblegum and banana aromas show through most. A nice aroma, but just a little too sweet.

T- A little musty, burnt flavor that drowns out any of the banana or bubblegum flavors, but still manages to be very sweet. Also, some bitterness in the finish that seems out of place.

MF- Medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

Poured from a bomber into a weizen glass

A - A rusty hazy brown pour. The beer is definately cloudy and has a reddish copper hue to it as well. There was a big head on this one that died slowly with an off white cream color.
S - A decnet nose. I pick up a good malty carmalized brown sugar sweetness on the front end, this opens to a wheaty and strong bready aroma in the middle, and it finishes with a slight ripened banana or even a light banana pudding aroma. After my second pour the aroma was even greater and the sugar and banana were far more prominent
T & M - The taste is much like the nose. The strong malt sugar start it off and open up to a good amount or grainy wheat. The beer has a good amount of chew in my opinion as the low carbination dies. Then comes the banana as it mingles with the carmalized malt flavor. A nice tasting beer overall. The alchohol is warming for sure in this beer as it is only decently hidden in the mouth.
O - An interesting beer from a good line of beers from heavy seas. I enjoy it, but it is nothing that blows you away. I think of this style as more summery and this one is warming and a little on the heavy side. Good beer, not incredible.

Purple-orange. Headless. Aroma of caramelized pear atop sweet bread. Ridiculous flavor. Rich and silky. Oily-malty, slick doughy-yeasty, honey-spicy. Peripheral wheat tartness, booze slinking beneath - held down by the medium-light, smooth malt juice. Packs some stealth power and startling drinkability.

This beer was a little on the dark side which makes me interested right from the start. This beer had so many flavors going on in it. There is the wheat aspect of it that it light and refreshing and it also has the strong power of a doppelbock. It's like a blend of the two, it's a neat idea but it wasn't my favorite.
