Very Good
Night SwellNight Swell
Notes: Night Swell's arctic winds and northern tides make their way south, a darkness descends upon the Atlantic, and even the most hardened hop heads feel the pull of the darkness. Night Swell's nor'easter blast of hoppy aromas combines with a warming dark roast and rich malt sweetness for a full-flavored, full-bodied IPA that stretches the boundaries of the style. Surrender to the darkness and ride the swell.

12 oz can. Aroma and flavor feature pine resin, some citrus, moderate bitterness, and some nice roastiness. Delicious. Bottom line: I need to drink more black IPAs. This is so much tastier than the average IPA, especially in fall/winter.

Code on bottom is 19220 (I'm thinking Julian - Aug 8), then Best By 2/07/20.
Pours dark brown, with clarity. Light brown head. Sticky lacing. Aroma is malty.. almost chocolatey sweet. Taste is of malts and caramel. Hops were almost non-existent. Not very bitter, semi-sweet. MF was smooth, just above watery.

Overall, it's not a bad beer, I'm not sure what HS was aiming for.

12 oz can poured into a shaker.

Appearance
Rudy red with mahogany shadows. Lively carbonation. Good clarity. 1 finger of creamy tan head.

Nose
Cocoa, caramel, grapefruit, pine, candied citrus, and dark candy sugar.

Taste
Roasted barley, cocoa, and black coffee highlighted by grapefruit zest, pine needle, and candied orange. Caramel, toffee, and dark candy sugar maltiness.

Mouthfeel
Medium-plus bodied, crisp, silky, creamy, and smooth with a medium-light bitterness.

Overall
A solid Black IPA. Again, I don't think the style gets enough respect.

Night swell does justice to the category, a sweeter, maltier, creamier IPA or DIPA.
a / pours a dark mahogany brown body with ruby corners, a khaki head that splashes lace.
s / sports citrus and floral hops over a sweet maltiness, some tea, some caramel, some medicine.
t / Never rises to outright char roastiness but chocolate, dark and bittersweet, in abundance. Sweet, medicinal syrup, but not cloying, cocoa powdery bittersweet finale. Fully enjoy at cask temp.
f / medium body, gently crisp, well built, smooth finish.
o / A favorite style that is perhaps slightly too sweet but otherwise good to taste test in the black IPA mix.

Not as hoppy as I would have liked. Very malty with coffee and chocolate notes. This is an after dinner drink for me. I like it but wouldn’t call it and IPA.

Rich brown color with some ruby highlights. Tan head falls to a nice cap. Leaves some nice lacing behind. Aroma of roasty malt, dark fruit, some pine. Taste is a good, balanced mix of roasty, caramel malt and fruity, slightly piney hops. Some bitterness, but not aggressive. The flavors fade out quickly after swallowing. Feel is medium-full. Nice carbonation. Overall it's a tasty brew and a good mix of flavors.

Heavy Seas Beer "Night Swell"
12 fl. oz. can. Best by date is illegible.
$2.29 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: "Night Swell" pours a very dark mahogany brown body with a bit of a ruby sheen and glimmering orange highlights at the base of the glass. The head is a full cap of tight-bubbled and creamy, slightly yellowish, tan foam. It's interesting that they've labeled it a "dark India pale ale" because it's really not quite black so it might be a bit odd to label it as a "black IPA". The aroma is bright and fresh with lightly citrusy and floral hops over a dark maltiness that suggests roastiness and chocolate but doesn't really deliver it. The flavor, however, offers more than the aroma suggests and it's got a very nice, dark and bittersweet chocolate flavor to it. The same hops found in the nose are threaded completely throughout and liven it while not stepping out as a separate component. That's fairly common for dark IPAs but occasionally you'll find one that has the malt component seemingly on one side, and the hop component seemingly on the other, and they only really blend in the middle but that's not the case here, it's really nicely meshed together and perfectly balanced. If I had to guess at the hops I'd go with Cascade, and perhaps Loral as well but I'm not sure. A median bitterness of around 55 or so IBUs brings it to a dry conclusion that lingers for a fair amount of time. I should note that I had one of these yesterday straight out of the fridge and quite cold, and I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as this one which I let warm up for about 15 minutes. The head retention is quite good, and I've still got a solid 16th of an inch of foam covering the surface, and there's plenty of large patches of lace left behind on the glass. ... I always forget the mouthfeel until last; it's medium in body and gently crisp and then smooth across the palate. My conclusion is that I've really enjoyed the two that I've had out of my six pack, and I'll most certainly enjoy the other four. It's not a beer that breaks any new ground but it's a really solid, well put together dark IPA.

This is very nice, well-carbonated black IPA, full of a somewhat bitter, coffee-hinting flavor. It goes down nicely, and I recommend it to people who like full-bodied dark IPAs.

12 oz can with a July 2020 BB date stamp on the bottom.
Pours with a near black body with a good tan head.
Unlike too many black IPAs, this one has a harmonious interplay of malts and hops. There is, however, a sharp contrast between the aroma and the flavor. The aroma suggests a very high malt/hops ratio but these are mixed in about equal strength in the flavor.

12oz can stamped BEST BY 03/16/20 poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp 7.5% ABV. The beer pours barely hazy with some floaties in a medium brown color. The head is light brown, somewhat persistent and leaves a nice lace. The aroma is roasty and chocolate malt with pine and earth. The taste is more chocolate at first transitioning to roasty, piney bitterness on the end. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied, adequately carbonated and dry in the finish. Overall, good. I've always enjoyed black IPAs and this one is pretty solid. Could have done without the hop particulate, but one of the better beers I've had from Heavy Seas.

A: caramel brown with 1/2" head that recedes to thin effervescence with mild lacing and small bubbles.
S: Hop, malt, caramel, nice aroma, inviting on the nose.
T: Malty, but not sweet, strong bitter hop finish, alcohol warming.
M: Prickly effervescence, body is a little thin.
O: A malted dank IPA, hops are not well-balanced. There is an aggressive bitterness with insufficient floral front end to match the malt and caramel notes. Fine to try and enjoy, but not too sessionable for the winter.

Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a black color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of roasted malts. Taste is roasted malts, light coffe, hops are present but in the background. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer and maybe too easy drinking at this abv.

A: crystal clear; the color of maple syrup; 1+ finger finely pored tan head that receded to a wispy cap; very nice lacing;

S: earthy, chocolate, and roasted grain;

T: a balance between chocolate and roasted grain; the grain gets stronger toward the end; finish is moderately bitter and long lasting;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: interesting; Heavy Seas calls this a "Dark IPA", which led me to expect black - so the color caught me by surprise; if the hops had stood out in more contrast to the malt, I would have liked it more;;
