Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Siren Noire isn’t your father’s chocolate stout. We’ve used almost 3 pounds of Belgian coco nibs per barrel. We’ve aged it for five weeks in bourbon barrels with vanilla beans added. A mix of dark malts gives Siren Noire a well-rounded body that is decidedly chocolatey—but without being extraordinarily sweet. Brewers Gold hops contribute an earthy spiciness, with notes of black current.

What I like about this beer it is balanced by an assertive flavor of roasted malts, which add a bitterness that aids drinkability. Notes of bourbon, vanilla and oak, however, the alcohol is well masked.
The mouthfeel is on the low side of medium bodied. The palate is semi dry and the finish is roasty and bitter. Gently carbonated and smooth.
A solid and good barrel stout. Try founders backwoods bastard for a step up too a wee heavy...

L Poured down the center of a snifter, dark brown color with 1/4" of light mocha head that dissipated quickly leaving a slight ring around the glass. Very minimal lacing.

S Light peat smoke, oak, bourbon, vanilla, caramel and chocolate.

T Starts with caramel and vanilla, oak, smoke and more caramel in the middle with a slight bitter finish with bourbon chocolate and vanilla. The chocolate is more of a milk chocolate and the vanilla is muted.

F The feel is on the thin side of medium bodied with medium prickly carbonation. In my opinion too thin for an imperial stout.

O Not bad but lacking in complexity and texture. I like my stouts chewy and complex and this one is neither. Definitely not a drain pour but the remaining three from my four pack will not be kept in my stash, they will be available to both friends and in laws. There are so many great options for BA stouts that I doubt I will revisit this once it is gone.

Pours an opaque dark brown color with a fingernail length high tan creamy head. Pretty decent retention for a high alcohol beer with lacing sticking to the glass.
The aroma is very inviting. Notes of dark chocolate dominate, and are complimented by bourbon, oak, vanilla and toffee.
What I like about the taste is that despite a prominent chocolate and dark caramel sweetness, it is balanced by an assertive flavor of roasted malts, which add a bitterness that aids drinkability. Notes of bourbon, vanilla and oak, however, the alcohol is well masked.
The mouthfeel is on the low side of medium bodied. The palate is semi dry and the finish is roasty and bitter. Gently carbonated and smooth.
A solid and enjoyable imperial stout. I paired it with a creamy pasta and leftover birthday cake dessert. It worked out well.

I am venturing into Heavy Seas this evening as I watch the 2018 Winter Olympics & the Kings/Pens game, both on TV. These are good times to be a hockey fan!

From the bottle: "Rich and velvety, this smooth brew owes its full body to imported specialty grains. Belgian cacao nibs impart a decadent chocolate nuance. Bourbon barrel aging adds tones of vanilla."; "Imperial Stout Brewed with Chocolate and Aged in Bourbon Barrels"; "Uncharted Waters explores the unique changes that happen to beer when exposed to wood. Each beer showcases a robust style, carefully matched with a wood treatment to produce a range of complex flavors. Vintage dating encourages further exploration of the aging process. As much about the voyage as the destination, we hope you enjoy these beers in the spirit in which they were brewed."; "Fearless. Bold. Independent."

I Pop!ped the cap & began a slow, gentle pour into the awaiting glass. There was no need for any further action on my part as it formed just over two fingers of dense, foamy, deep-tan/light-brown head with good retention. Color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing garnet highlights only at the edges. Nose was heady with notes of smoke, dark chocolate & especially bourbon. I find it ironic that I am not a big fan of bourbon, but I really dig the flavor in beer. Mmm. Mouthfeel was big, full & creamy, like a dollop had been scooped onto my tongue. That being the case, I just allowed it to roll around, warming up to release notes of vanilla, caramel & coconut in addition to the aforementioned dark chocolate, smoke & boozy bourbon. Phew! Wow, was this ever good! Jeez-O, man, this was dangerous. The taste was so smooth & mellow that it was going down like it was nothing, which was certainly NOT the case. Finish was semi-dry with the chocolate and bourbon barrel aging fighting it out for supremacy. Phew! My heart is really pumping from this one. Proceed with caution.

Just about pitch black with minimal tan head and foamy sporadic lacing. Heavy malts and light chocolate and bourbon on the nose. Taste is sweeter than expected with a light bourbon burn, roasty malts, some chocolate and vanilla coolness and a nice balance of hops to finish it off.
