Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
In the most worthy of pumpkin patches and during the silence of the midnight hour, the Greater Pumpkin raises up and pours a rich deep and burnished orange color. Heady aromas of bourbon, cinnamon, ginger, allspice and clove linger seductively over the thick white head of this tremendous brew. Its love at first sip as the full malt body, dominated by British crystal malt, brown sugar and pumpkin, slowly washes over your tongue. Bourbon barrel aging rounds out the flavors with notes of oak, vanilla, and bourbon. Pairs well with crisp autumn weather, crunchy fallen leaves, and the knowledge that your kids will be asleep soon so you can raid their Halloween candy bags.

Good Pumpkin Ale. Pours a hazy iced tea color with a small off white head that fades fast. Minimal lacing. Aroma is fairly mild. There is pumpkin, a little pumpkin spices and some aroma from the bourbon barrel. Taste is much stronger. The sweet malt and pumpkin come out strongest in the taste followed by the bourbon flavor. There is allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg here as well. There is also some bitterness from the oak barrel. Mouthfeel is rich with some slight booziness from the bourbon barrel flavor. Very enjoyable, especially on a cold night.

On tap (original straight 4.3 rating)
Pours a burnt orange, with initial cloudiness that fades to translucence. Head grows to a finger, but dies recede to the edges and spots on the surface. Head clings to sides briefly with each sip.

Nose is a combination of pumpkin/squash pulp with just enough spice to bring out the dessert part. Bourbon adds a decent waft of vanilla with its own light scent. It really leans a little more pumpkin bread than pumpkin pie.

Taste is similar to the nose, and definitely brings out my bready impression from the taste. The bourbon and barrel come out mid-taste, bringing a spicy woodiness to the mix. Pretty straightforward but also quite tasty. A little less sweet than the nose indicates. Some sips I actually get a little banana in the mix (later in the taste).

A little bit thin and maybe starting to show some age (it is December), a little oily aftertaste noticed.

Not as good as my original rating indicated, but a very solid pumpkin beer that I'll have to revisit next year more in season.

A very copper color and a creamy bubbly head.smells of allspice, clove, cinnamon.subtle notes of burnt vanilla.tastes of all of those favors but the bourbon barrel aging is a bit over the top the bourbon hints are more forth front than the pumpkin and makes the beer a bit "hot" and boozy.you can taste the 10%,mouth feel is pretty light but it's fine it makes the beer easier to drink.this beer may be better to cellar a year or two....it's very good and a lot going on with it.a lot better than a lot of other pumpkin beers but not for every pumpkin fan for sure.if you're a barrel aged fan at least give it a try if you don't mind pumpkin flavors.

L: Gorgeous look: A really great looking beer. Dark copper in color, with a small white head that faded fast.

A: Catching some pumpkin, vanilla, ginger and sweet malts.

T/M: Very malty and the caramel hits hard. Tasting nutmeg and clove and some raisins. Maybe figs as well. I do catch some bourbon notes but not a ton. Alcohol is very forward as is the carbonation. Aftertaste is sweet and earthy and a bit bitter. Tastes like a big beer.

O: I liked this beer at first and while my review is pretty positive, it oddly got worse as it warmed. I preferred it at the start but the taste got too cloying and the alcohol got hotter as it sat. 22oz of this is not happening unless I milk this over a few hours, which I’m not inclined to do. Nothing artificial tasting about it, which is nice. Flavors were balanced, but a bit muted for a BA beer. Not overly complex and/or alcohol just blew everything else away.

Best enjoyed at a bar in a small pour. For me 22oz was too much and it wasn’t complex enough to enjoy in that quantity. Wouldn’t seek this out again but don’t have a lot of negative things to say about it. Just not a repeat buy.

1 PT 6 FL OZ bottle
Served in a snifter

This beer pours a hazy burnt orange in color with amber highlights. It is topped with an inch of beige head that leaves little lacing.

I get some roasted pumpkin, caramel, and vanilla to start. I also get a nice blend of cinnamon and pumpkin spices. It smells like a fall treat.

The pumpkin spices are muted allowing the pumpkin to shine. The bourbon barrel is not readily apparent but does come through by way of caramel and vanilla flavors. The pumpkin spices, while subtle, are there to bring home the flavor.

Full, smooth mouthfeel

This is a solid pumpkin beer. I would have liked to have experienced more bourbon flavors, but I would have it again.

Really like how this beer is put together. The bourbon character, while apparent, is in the background as it should be, in my opinion. The first flavor I get is pumpkin which is followed by cinnamon and clove.

It pours orange with clouding, a nice head and lacing. There are aromas of cinnamon, allspice, clove, and pumpkin. It has initial flavors of pumpkin, cinnamon, clove, allspice, then the bourbon becomes evident with brown sugar and oak. It has alcohol warming and bourbon characters on the palate. It is a complex, but extremely well done brew.

From the bottle, it pours clear amber with a small head, quickly dissipating. Heavy scent of bourbony alcohol and some spice in the nose. The taste punches you with the alcoholic kick, like an assassin that announces his presence before he strikes.

L - Dark, hazy orange. Two fingers of off-white head.

S - Very, VERY subtle pumpkin, cinnamon, and oak. No bourbon.

T - Alcoholic squash. Cinnamon is biggest spice with some nutmeg. Finish is an alcohol sting. The spiciness and alcohol are reminiscent of rum and not bourbon. No barrel character to speak of.

F - A tad thin for a 10% barrel-aged beer. Alcohol is noticeable, but not overpowering. Lots of carbonation, but despite the alcohol sting it goes down easy.

O - No barrel character and a thin feel hold this back tremendously. On the other hand, as a standard pumpkin ale, this works nicely. I think this was a little too ambitious, but it competes with other standard, non-BA pumpkin beers.

Ginger with spices on the nose. Beautiful medium thick head. Flavor of allspice and a nice balance of seasonal spices. The perfect fall flavor and something to look forward to. The pumpkin is pleasantly subtle along with the vanilla and light booze to add to the complexity. I enjoyed this much more than I expected. This is not a goofy holiday gimmic, but a really enjoyable complex beer.

22 ounce bottle served in a pint glass.

Pours a nice caramel color with almost no head nor lacing.

The aroma is great. Malty , spicy, and biscuity.

The taste is the same. The spices are somewhat a little strong for my taste but still a good beer overall.

My first barrel aged beer. The wood gives it a character similar to oaked red wine. The smell is vanilla wih some light pumpkin pie spices. The taste is much the same. Very smooth and slightly sweet. This was a good sipper. nb

Pours a cloudy orange/copper color with a slight head and very little lacing. NOtes of bourbon on the nose very little pumpkin. Tastes is pumpkin forward, then the booze of the bourbon gets you. I wish the pumpkin flavor was stronger.

Pumpkin ale fan, or not, you should give this one a shot. Can't beat the price, and actually has a good balance without the pumpkin flavor dominating. ABV sneaks up on you, perfect beer for a cool fall night.

Pours a deeply cloudy orange-brown. There is a smidge of head when poured but it dissipates quickly. The aroma is rich pumpkin and spices and the taste is much the same but a little more restrained. It lacks the depth of other pumpkin beers but it also hides its alcohol well. The body is lighter, too but it fits the beer well. There is also a good hit of carbonation

One of the best pumpkin beers out there (and there are too many, if you ask me). Had this on cask, and the bourbon, pumpkin, and spices blended nicely. Nothing over the top in this rich, satisfying sipper.

One of the best Pumpkin Ales I've tried thus far. Color's golden, A lovely hue to compliment this season. Almost tastes like Smashing Pumpkins (which is pretty bad arse). Unlike most strong ales, it made my belly content, not irritated (per usual) as if it had consumed something spoiled. Definitely worth a try for any lover of spices.

In a snifter a dark gold color with a small off-white head.

Aroma of pumpkin, spice, and booze.

Pumpkin taste with allspice and nutmeg. A rather strong bourbon presence.

Medium mouthfeel. 10% ABV well-hidden.

2014 bomber, poured September 2015. Pours light brown/amber color. You can tell its a pumpkin beer, but the real star is the bourbon barrel flavor. Aftertaste has a great floral character with no burn. Looking forward to comparing to current years batch.

From the 650 ml. bottle. 2015 batch. Sampled on September 7, 2015

The pour is a moderately heady amber-orange color. Some haze.

Subtle aroma. Pumpkins are vague but the nutmeg and other pumpkin spices are a bit more noticeable but still kind of distant.

Medium to full body.

The taste has got some spice! Big nutmeg, cinnamon, and pepper spice finish erupting unexpectedly on the palate considering I got a very thin aroma. Where did that come from?

Very very good pumpkin beer. If you're a fan of these kinds of beer than plz at least do me the favor and try this one. I happened to come across a whole case of these in almost April and let's just say I'll b buying the whole thing. Anyone who likes weyerbacher pumpkin ale will love this it tastes similar but packs more of a punch.

2013 edition, 22 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a beautiful amber color, specked with orange highlights, topped with two fingers of white head that quickly dissolved into a thin lacing of foam that completely covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very aromatic! Lots of candied pumpkin and ginger with strong notes of clove, cinnamon and brown sugar, along with some subtle notes of wood and vanilla. Due to the aging in bourbon barrels, and the high ABV, there’s some alcohol in the nose as well.

Taste: Tons of roasted pumpkin, candied ginger and cinnamon, followed by some wood, vanilla, clove, caramel-like sweetness, and finished with some notes of bourbon from the barrel the beer was aged in. Delicious!

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied to slightly chewy. Very smooth as there is no carbonation what-so-ever. With an ABV of 10.0%, and with the aging in bourbon barrels, there is quite a bit of alcohol on the palate, imparting a pleasant warmth in the mouth.

Overall: This is a remarkable beer! I love the candied pumpkin and ginger flavor as well as the blended bourbon and vanilla flavors. Very, very good! I’m getting two bottle so this at least next year, one to drink right away, and one or two to age. Delicious!

My god, I can't stand pumpkins and I love this one. It has to be served at the correct temp, around 50 degrees or a little warmer to really bring out the the bourbon barrel aging, but does the aging ever pair with the pumpkin and spices. Pumpkins are a style I can't generally abide, everyone has different tastes, but I enjoy bourbon barrel aged beers so when I saw this at the White Oak Tavern tonight, well I had to get a taste. After a taste, I ordered a full 10 oz goblet and savored every drop.
