12oz bottle into Ommegang BPA glass. BB May 2012

Pours a near pitch black with a light brown head, very pretty. Smell is lots of fresh citrusy (some tangerine) hops with a hint of roast in the back. Taste bright is tangerine and grapefruit hops with smoky chocolate finish. Aftertaste is mostly smokey and bitter. Roasted malt is subdued but definitely there. Medium in body and carb.

Best Black IPA I've had, pretty well balanced although it leans towards the IPA hops. Something I would certainly get again. Tangerine hops are the most stand out part of this brew.

Received in trade from budznsudz, thanks for the opportunity.
Pours a solid dark brown with the faintest of garnet highlights when held to light. Smallish off white head rises and falls quickly leaving a moderate amount of lace. Smells of grapefruit and pine with hints of bread and caramel. Taste follows the aroma fairly well but adds a small bit of chocolate and roasted grain. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet slick mouthfeel. Decent beer, quite drinkable if not a little simple.

I had this on tap not long ago and really liked it. From the bottle this black IPA shows a pitch black color with a decent light-tan colored head that fades to a more wispy film and lots of lacing. My smeller picks up a mild malty swamp hop. Not real strong but pleasant. The taste buds finds a near stout-like malt with more swampy, herbal hops. It’s got an almost grassy touch in a medium bodied brew with fine carbonation. Plenty drinkable and highly enjoyable.

A: A shining black with a short fizzy head; little lacing or retention.

S: Pine, earthy grass (like a fresh-cut lawn), and a gingery potpourri scent emanate from this hoppy body. Fair amount of chocolate and biscuit dough in there, as well.

T: A blend of toasted bread, pecan, cocoa, and cola - mostly dark sugars. Earthy hops with tastes of grassy pine give a pretty bitter display, though they remain balanced the whole time. Only slightly roasted on the ends, with a mildly dry, grainy aftertaste.

M: A hefty beer, but with enough carbonation to keep it drinkable. Thicker than most IPAs.

O: A big black ale that I wouldn't mind having another bottle of - simple as that. This is not an overly complex beer, but it is one I definitely enjoyed.

12oz bottle, best by May 2011.

Pours dark brown, almost black with a two finger foamy light brown head that leaves some clumpy lacing and holds a good cap.

Aroma is floral and citrus hops with some roasted malt and chocolate. Also some coffee, caramel, toasted bread, nuts and the roast aspect really starts to come out as the beer warms. Good to very good strength.

Flavor starts with the hops, citrus/grapefruit, floral, a bit of pine and finishes with nice smooth chocolate, roasted malt, and some coffee and caramel. Mild sweetness, moderate bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slick, medium carbonation.

An excellent Black IPA, nice balance of hops and malts, very drinkable and enjoyable.

A- Pours an almost black color, I'd say a really dark brown with a light tan head. Head is pretty nice, with good retention and leaves some nice lacing.

S- The aroma is really nice just a bit weak. Hops are here, mainly citrus (grapefruit and pineapple for sure, along with some roasted malts, and a bit of chocolate.

T- I really liked this one. Citrus hops are first to come through then followed by malts. Finishes with a nice coffee and almost charcoal taste.

M- Probably a bit on the lighter side of medium and good carbonation.

D- Was pretty surprised by this one. I really enjoyed this one and will have this one again for sure.

On tap at RFD Washington, DC, 2.16.12.

Black opaque body, one finger off-white head, small bubbles. Nose is more roast than citrus. Taste is opposite the nose, citrus over roast, no resin. Mouthfeel is light for style, medium dry finish. OK but not that great, I guess having drank Barley Brown's Turmoil you can call me jaded.
