A= very dark black, fair tan head when poured carefully into a pint glass.

S= strong nose, hops and roasted malts.

T= although I'm a big fan of Loose Canon, this beer is like a black & tan that just doesn't quite come together for me in flaor. It's got the black beer flavor and the rich roasted malts and the IPA effect but....

M= clean, a bit zingy with hops bite.

O= not quite. I'll keep trying and revise my review as necessary.

Poured into a nonic.

Pours a near black with some ruby along the edges. Has a thick, dense light tan head. Very chunky head settles to a finger thick. Nice lace stays behind as well. Great looks.

Brew smells of lots of hops; earthy, floral, piney. As the head settles the big malty roasted notes are detected. Really good nose.

Brew is perfectly balanced; silky smooth malts balance the nice sticky hops. Big floral and earthy hops here. Some sweet grapefruit or citrus as well. Nice bitters here. Really nice roasted notes as well; nutty, malty cocoa as well. Maybe even coffee in the aftertaste. Finishes dry, brew drinks like a stout. Wow this is a great brew here. Very full bodied and full of flavors. Great stuff.

A case worthy brew here, perfect balance of roasted dark malts and lots of sticky oily hops. Awesome stuff here.

A: Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. Body is coca-cola-black with a small tan/light brown head that leaves behind good thick rings of lace.

S: Very nice nose - strong. I get citrus, pine and tea. Also some roastiness - more so as it warms up a bit.

T: Follows the nose somewhat - some underlying roasted barley malt followed by a touch of char, a hint of cocoa, and then it's the hops: pine and pine resin and a bit of citrus. Juicy at times. Finishes without any noticeable alcohol (despite the relatively strong 7.25% ABV), but heat is felt in the belly right away.

M: Medium in heft. Very smooth - lower carbonation levels, but it's not at all slick.

O: I like a wee bit more chocolate malt in my American Black Ales, but the roasted barley and charcoal provides a nice enough contrast to the hops that it's a fairly minor quibble. Good stuff, and highly drinkable.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours black, with a couple fingers of creamy light mocha head. This retains with a tight and creamy ½ finger, which whips up a foamy cascade that slowly recedes down the sides of the glass and leaves back thick swathes of clingy lace. The soft creamy richness of the head very much looks a nitro pour here. Impressive. The aroma has a fresh leafy and citric feel to it, with a fair amount of spice as well. Unfortunately not a whole lot of the malt is coming through here, with maybe just some light sweetness and roast sitting along the sides and back of this. Hops definitely sit at the forefront of this though, especially those peppery spice notes.

The taste is green citrus throughout, with a moderate bitterness and like the nose, pretty darn spicy. Chalky feeling chocolate malt and a coffee roastiness surround the hops but this overall isn’t coming off as flavorful as it feels like it wants to be. The finish is dry and pity with some lingering spice. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a VERY smooth and creamy feel that packs a bit of crispness into it as well. The overall silky presence and easy drinking nature of this almost has this feeling like it is on nitro (just like that rich look from the pour).

A robust look and easy drinking body were about the highlights here for me, as this came off as overly leafy and spicy feeling and just not as overall flavorful as I was expecting it to be. There is enough potential here to maybe try a bottle yourself though and make up your own mind.

Best before May 2012; Poured in a pint glass.

A - One inch of light tan creamy, fluffy head with decent retention; Color is approaching black with a garnet glow when held to the light; Good webs of lacing scattered around the glass

S - Very pleasant aroma with a nice showing of roasted coffee with cream; Pretty closely balanced with floral and citrus hops; Sweet chocolate is lurking in the background

T - The hops don't have much of a presence here as they do in the nose - I taste very subtle grassy hops; Lots of roasted coffee with cream flavor here with a good bit of smokiness and earthy qualities; Bittersweet taste comes through up front, but subsides quickly

M - Carbonation is a little below moderate; Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, and smooth with a pretty dry finish

O - Having enjoyed Loose Cannon in the past, I was excited to see this beer and give it a try. This beer might be based on the Loose Cannon recipe, but it tastes like a totally different beer to me. I thought it was fairly tasty with its coffee, earthy, and smoky flavors, but I was hoping for a bigger showing of hops in the taste like I detected in the nose. That said, I still enjoyed this beer and wouldn't mind having some more.
