Appearance: Poured into a Goblet is a very nice looking rich mahogany beer with about one finger of head on top.

Aroma: A bready dryness in the nose along with ripe fruits, banana, plum and a touch of citrus fruit. Notes of fruity esters along side some yeasty bits.

Taste: Toffee with a little bit of chewy mouthfeel with a touch of hop bite. Plum, fig, raisins and banana. Yesty breadiness with brown bread sweetness. Fairly malty with a good dry finish.

Notes: A hearty beer that's very drinkable. Cheers.

This brew poured out a little darker than I expected. The color was a brownish gold with a fizzy white head on top. The lacing and head were pretty gone right after pouring... Not a pleasant sign for an ipa. The smell of the beer smell Belgian for sure and had some hops in there too. The taste of the beer wasn't the greatest combo in the world to me. I found that the blend of a Dubbel and an IPA was just not what I was hoping for. The mouthfeel was pretty good, it had a nice thickness to it and a decent carbonation. Overall I just felt that this brew was a little off on most aspects. I prefer the normal loose cannon well before this one.

A: Nice rich golden color with some nice dark sun gold to it. Decent white head.
S: Sweet candy sugar nose that couples with a nice deep bitter hop aroma.
T: The beer has a good rich sweet dark fruit malt flavor with some hints of bitter hops. It has a good candy sugar and full bready taste.
M/O: Very slight carbonation that helps enhance the flavor of the beer. Good but lacks a little in the hop flavor. Overall, a good interpretation of the style.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a medium brown color, with a thin but dense off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick on the glass.

S: The aroma contains brown sugar, fruit, caramelized malts, some Belgian yeast and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel, brown sugar and fruit. Then some bready flavors of Belgian yeast and a hearty malt character come in. The hops presence is very faint for the style and isn’t strong enough to create the type of balance you look for in this type of beer. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sweet.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, not the best representation of style, this is a decent beer to drink for a while but there are better beers within the style.

A: dark amber with sticky head

S: hoppy, bready, wintry spices

T: interesting, can't decide whether it wants to be an IPA or a belgian

M: smooth, easy going down

O: As mentioned before, this beer is confused. Like the smoothness of the belgian style but the IPA component isn't coming through enough. Still tasty, but pales in comparison to Loose Cannon, a beer that knows what it is, and what it wants. Don't have much experience with the style, but from what I would expect from a "belgian IPA," would hope for more of a balance. 75% belgian and 25% IPA. Not bad, and like heavy seas in general.

Unfortunately no decent glassware for this style so poured into a standard pint glass. Poured with less then a finger of head, no lacing to speak of for me. Its appearance is not what I expect of for this style, maybe I'm a novice on it, but from what I know of this style it is much lighter, this is a deep amber color, not the color I would associate with an IPA, Belgian or not.

While I taste some hops, there is no smell of them to speak of. Smells of malt and sugar.

Taste, now this is where it shines for me personally. Taste the Belgian for sure, but I must admit, not so much IPA. Maybe it's my love for Belgians here, but I like it. So I've rated it high, perhaps a little higher then deserving for it compared to others of the style, but damnit, I like the taste of this beer! A little to highly spiced for the style, but I like it. Yeast, dark fruits, banana, maybe a touch of bubblegum. A light touch of citrus from the hops, but in reality not much hops here for me, which is why I don't rate it a IPA much, if at all.

Medium body, almost no carbonation to speak of. A touch syrupy, but nothing much to it.

Overall I like this beer. I tried to rate it as accurate as possible to the style seeing that I like the beer myself. Again as I said, probably just my love of Beligans. Can't say it matches up well to the promised similarity of Loose Cannon, but hey, it is what it is. I like it!

Pours just a half fingers worth of off white head. This dies down immediately to just about nothing. Wow this is bubble less. Looks like root beer soda.

This smells like root beer soda as well. I'm serious when I say this. Clove, sarsaparilla, other root beer like spices. No hops that I can discern can be found.

Tastes similar to root beer. Sasparilla, vanilla, clove, some banana yeast notes. A touch of herbal hops. Quite sweet with a mild hop bitterness. This leans towards the very sweet side in the end.

Mouthfeel is medium with it's light carbonation and very mild hop bitterness in the finish. A solid sweetness hits in the mid palate.

Overall this is a let down. Its a weak attempt at an IPA, never-mind if it's Belgian or not. Quite sweet and root beer flavored.
$1.80 a single. Probably never to pick this one up. Maybe it's a bad batch, maybe not.

On tap @ Meridian Pint in DC. Served in a Shaker Pint.

A: Reddish brown in hue. Not much head.

S: Hmm...kind of sweet smelling...berries.

T: The taste starts off with that sweet, berry thing but finishes crisp and dry.

M: medium to light in body with nice tight carbonation.

I like this one. A nice take on a Belgian IPA.

Served in a frosted pint glass at Brixx. From notes. Reviewed 20 June 2011.

A: Orange-ish brown. Cloudy-clear. Little head, but good lacing.

S: Banana and cloves? What's going in on in my IPA? Yeast, apparently.

T: Weird. As. Balls. But a great Belgian IPA. At first, it tastes like its namesake dubbel, with berries and Belgian yeast, but it finishes like an American IPA -- hoppy bitter, lined with citrus. Good beer.

M: Slightly carbonated, medium-bodied, neutral.

O: Really odd, but I really like it. A good introduction to Belgian IPAs. A little sweet maybe, but recommended.

A deep nutty copper color with a decent off-white head that settles to a thin full cover with lots of even lacing. The aroma is an interesting yeasty cinnamon knockwurst with just a hint of sweet clove and a citrusy overtone. Very unusual and likable. The flavor is a delicious blend of light licorice over malty sweet toffee. Really tasty and highly drinkable for the style. It’s medium plus bodied with a pleasant but full carbpnation that lends a luscious and refreshing feel. The hop factor is somewhat understated but a very nice earthy green leaf that mixes so well with the sweet malty licorice ideas. This is a fabulous Belgian choice, something a bit atypical but that will appeal to most any beer/IPA lover. Nice job.

12 ounce bottle, best by Sept, 2011. Pours crystal clear reddish orange color with a fairly dense 2 finger off white head with good retention that reduces to a decent lacing cap. Some lacing sticks to the glass as you drink as well. Aromas of big spicy yeast; with some citrus, bubblegum, and banana notes underneath. Some nice and interesting aromas, with good strength. Taste of big spicy yeast, banana, bubblegum, clove, citrus, and pine. Decent amount of bitterness on the finish that lingers with banana, bubblegum, and spicy flavors. Medium carbonation and body. Also has a bit of a creamy mouthfeel. Decent balance of flavors. No alcohol in the taste or finish, well masked for the alcohol level. Very easy drinkability for the alcohol level, very smooth. Overall a very nice Belgian IPA. I would have it again.

I am getting killed here. I love this beer. In the summer of 2011, this is my go-to!

You are not going to get hop-slapped silly with this. But you're not going to get the same new old Kolsch wanna-be like other summer offerings.

This is a good overaller. Stock it for picnics and b-b-ques. Red Sox vs NYY on NESN? This beer rules!

You can drink it, yournwife will drink it and so will your Bud Light loving Uncle Ed.

A: Two and a half finger thick slowly dissipating head. Browinish amber color.

S: Aroma was trapped for a while under the thick head. Once it got down, malty. A little sweet.

T: Caramel, floral, dark fruits... its a great combination. The touch of hops is there but it isn't overwhelming which is fine with me. Little spicey.

M: Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. It sours a little as it sits which is why I its not a 4.5 as I didn't care for it.

Overall: I really liked this one. It has a great taste and mouthfeel.

Serving Type - Bottle

Appearance - Dark brown/tan, 1/4 head that dissapeared fast. Decent lacing.

Smell - Yeast, spices, Sugars, very floral, dark fruits like plum, grape, rasin.

Taste - Floral spices, carmal and some yeast make up the bulk of flavor. Hops are pretty hidden beneath the for mentioned flavors. Not much else going on. Alcohol is masked well.

Mouthfeel - Its rather thin and light, flavor is simple and easy to enjoy. Mouth really doesnt get much done to it. PAlette recovers fast.

Overall - Pretty week and standard for a belgian ipa. Not alot of flavors, would be a good starter for this style. Not bad but nothing special or new, not worth my time to drink again.

12oz bottle. Part of the Sunken Sampler mix 12 pack. Pours a murky, golden dark brown color with very little head. Minimal lacing. Aroma is a big whiff of tangy yeast. Slight hop aroma along with some banana and brown sugar. Taste is more of the yeast flavor with faint hops. Tangy and sweet with some bitterness towards the end. This definitely has more "Belgian" to it than "IPA". A bit floral tasting from the hop presence. This is just an alright beer. I was hoping for more hop flavor to this once since the bottle said it is a variation of Loose Cannon which I like alot and has a good amount of hop flavor to it. Unfortunately, I didn't really taste that. I'm all set with this beer.

Bottle indicates this beer is best drank before sept 2011.

A. Head from a moderate pour is half a finger. This dissipates in just over a minute, leaving frosting and a ring. Body is a nice mahogany tinged with orange.

S. Hops, a bit of yeast and nice malt tones. I also detect a little spiciness in the nose.

T. Taste follows the nose, although adds a bit of breadiness near the end to compliment the spices.

M. Refreshing and clean. Medium bodied, slightly sticky, slight dry ending.

Poured from a 120z bottle into a tulip. Notched on bottle as best by August of 2011.

A - Slightly cloudy copper colored beer with minimal white foam and minimal lacing

S - Nose of belgian yeast and spices, with faint citrus hops. Some caramel and sweet malt smells as well.

T - Get more of a hop presence from the taste, but not overpowering. Blends nicely with spices and a sweet malt flavor.
A bit dry on the finish.

M - Medium bodies with minimal carbonation evident.

Not my favorite from this brewery, but I enjoyed this beer. It is a nice balance of malt and hops, with some spice to add to the complexity.

ST: 12oz poured into a Tulip glass.

A: Dark chestnut brown with a fluffy white head that sticks on the glass.

S: Malt, pine, citrus, and banana.

T: Citrus, banana, bubblegum, herbs, with a bitter sweet finish that is syrupy.

M: Surprisingly on the light side of medium bodied.

O: A pleasant Belgium IPA that is not as rich or complex as actual Belgium IPAs. However, it is not a bad beer and does have some balance. It is slightly thin towards the end (though the finish stuck in the throat).

12 oz bottle. Purchase-before month clearly notched on bottom of front label.

Pours a halfway clear, nice, dark-amber. A light-tan head rings the glass. Smell is equal parts gum, spices, and vegetable sugar. Of note, this brew taste has a really smooth, buttery feel to it, like a lightly oaked chardonnay. I get some bitter, tannin-like hops, caramel, and ample, clovey spice. Feel remains incredibly wine-like & viscous. Finishes dry from some effective hops. An interesting Belgian IPA.

I picked this up as part of a mix-a-six at Al's of Hampden -poured cool into my Duvel tulip.

The color is deep copper bordering on bronze with very good clarity, bubbles are seen rising like a twister from the laser etching. The rocky ecru cap measures about 1 inch froma vigoorous pour. The lace sticks pretty well and bead is of average size. The smell is very malty, a bit of caramel with some light bready and gentle yeast esters from the Belgian yeast which are more ripe banana than anything. there might be a tinge of pine from the hops in the background. The feel is pretty malty as well, but the hops come through in the back end. The carbonation is moderate and the sweetness level is more than average at least for a Belgian ipa. The astringency and spice are very low in the feel.

This label made me wonder -'Is this a hoppy dubbel?' since it uses dubbel in the name and loose cannon is their ipa. The flavor is fruity and caramel in the malt with gentle toast notes but the yeast is very mild and the hops are very submerged under the candy-like malt that is tasty, but almost becomes cloying. I think it is balanced in general but the balance favors the malt. The yeast could be more of the focus as well as the hops since they market this as a Belgian IPA. Overall I was kind of dissapointed expected more of a hop forward beer but the overall flavor is not bad. I think if you expect more of a dubbel you should be allright, but the label seems to send a mixed message.

Sampled from a bottle, best by September 2011. Dark copper orange in color with excellent clarity. Poured with a frothy off-white head with staying power that left sheetes of sticky lacings on the glass. Belgian yeast and spice aromas hit you first with citrus hop aromas beneath. Medium bodied with lively carbonation. Nice balance of tangy citrus hop and Belgian yeast flavor from beginning to end with a nice malty backbone. Finishes semi-dry with a bit of spice. A nice assortment of flavors and aromas.

Medium amber color when poured into any style of glassware.
A smallish white head is produced when poured into your glass. It's small but quite dense and lingers a while. Leaves some lacing.
Nicely carbonated.

Backs up the label. This beer does sport a rather robust and tangy hop bouquet. And the malts linger in the background.

A nicely balance ale with the malts having a sweet caramel taste and hops having a tangy citrus taste.

Smooth and balance mouthfeel. Clean with no aftertaste.

A good beer and dead on as far as BIPA's go.
Not overly hopped and no malt overkill.

appearance: pours a clear, vibrant reddish-brown amber, with moderate carbonation, thin, filmy foam leaving similar lacing.

smell: balanced blend of hops and yeast, light overall, with an even lighter essence of fruit notable in the undertones.

taste: begins lighter and cleaner, elements of hops and spice quickly present themselves, hops are dry and piney (much like Loose Cannon), but the characteristics of the yeast enhance the mellow aspects, finishes more on the spicy side with a more lasting lingering.

drinkability: great example of the style, Belgian style notes of yeast are complementary and not forced upon this already mellow IPA, good abv, definitely achieves "bridging the gap."
