Presentation: Highly prestigious looking label and bottle with the stamp of royalty. 275ml brown bottle. No freshness date. Ingredients: water, malt, lactose, caramel and hops.

Appearance: As black as a stout should be, and then some. Thick black, ruby/brown edges with a thick and creamy coffee coloured head that sticks and keeps. A light brownish froth and cascade of a head rides a top.

Smell: Candied espresso with a perfumy alcohol. Strong coffee, sweet milk and creamy caramel aromas.

Taste: Delicious and complex sweet malt flavours of roasted coffee, caramel and chocolate meld with an overall sweet milk flavour. Mouthfeel is chewy, body is full and robust. There's a delicate hop bitterness that smoothes right into the malt character, balancing but allowing the malt, lactose and caramel mix to dominate the experience. The combo creates a pleasing fruitiness too. A slight roasted astringency joins the palate and provides the right amount of roasted dryness to offset the sweet profile. Finishes a touch dry with roasted, metallic and earth flavours.

Notes: This is why we live. Very smooth and creamy, and one of the best stouts brewed to this day. I'd go as far as speculating that it might be better than the highly/over rated Guinness, as an everyday stout. But, that's just us so keep the flames minimal =) All I know is that this is a sheer delight for any imbiber willing to indulge with such a complex and oft overlooked Stout.

Great as aperitif or paired with a dessert. A magnificent and prime example of a Sweet Stout.

A gift from the beer gods, though I am giving it a lower score due to the fact that it is brewed in the US and it is not half as good as the real stuff.

Poured pitch black with nice caramel colored head, very sweet bitter chocolate smell.Very sweet earthy chocolaty taste, maybe a bit to sweet but is very good.Low in strength wich makes it very drinkable, drinking one as I write this.Sweetest beer I think I have ever had.

This beer is straight-up, pitch, bowling-ball black. Period. It is not "deep ruby", or "dark chocolate" I'm holding it right up to the light and nothing is being reflected or getting through. There was a shiny, sparkly bronzed head on this beer for a moment, but its gone now, though it has left a rich lacing.

Whoah that nose. This smells like a White Russian, with less alcohol. It is very rich and I can easily close my eyes and imagine chocolate or coffee liquor in my hand.

Taste is bittersweet then a tad metallic for a moment before going to a smooth dark chocolate with the lactic character mostly in the finish /aftertaste. Roastiness is extremely faint and only makes brief cameos. Its fairly uncomplex for a beer with all the sensory hullabaloo, but hey, she's smooth. Real smooth.

Mouthfeel is actually mid-bodied and creamy. Could I drink this all night long? I doubt it, but for a fricken Triple Milk Stout its ridiculously smooth.

Overall a really solid beer. Pours very black with ruby on the edges but not that jet oily black that the imperial stouts pour. Reddish brown head on top that laced well. Smelled good with the roast coming through. First sip is sweet with the roasted flavors and coffee coming through from middle to the end. Very mild hops add to the bitter finish which cuts through the sweetness up front. Not alot of hidden fruit flavors. Fairly well carbonated(more than typical stout) but still creamy which gave a nice feel and added a crisper note at the end than expected. Carbonation almost scrubs off the sweet flavor. Very drinkable but may get too sweet after a couple. I really enjoyed this beer-it balances the sweet and roasted flavors better than the other sweet stouts I've tried.

A: Thick brown and somewhat viscous as it was poured into a pint glass. Produced creamy light brown head that eventually diminished after several minutes. Average lacing.

S: Faint malt nose with just the lightest hint of coffey & chocolate

T: Full bodied sweet chocolate malts is predominant as it hits the taste buds. Smoothing bittering leaves the experience relatively balanced but leaning toward the sweeter side. Finishes sweet but not cloying.

M&D: Nice and chewy, full bodied with very little carbonation. Smooth going down and highly enjoyable.

I came across this brew in a World Market store in Cary, NC. Not a place I usually shop for beer but then again I don't recall seeing this in my usual haunts. What a great stout! It's incredibly smooth and creamy with great flavor and complexity. I'll be watching out for it more often from now on.

A friend of mine raved about this stuff, so I bought a six pack and nearly gagged. Each bottle tasted like someone had poured iodine in it.Went for a second try a week ago. 180 degree difference. On my 0 to 100 scale this work of art is in the 90's, and I only have about 5 rated that high. It poured dark brown with a one inch head, that dissappeared quickly.Chocolately aroma, wonderful soft, mildly sweet chocolate, mocha taste, which faded into an exquisite roasted malt aftertaste. As you finish the bottle a nice and smooth sweetness lingers in your mouth. There will always be at least one bottle of this in my house.

Georgeously pitch chocolately brown dark with a wonderfully light brown creamy head. Scents of coffee, espresso and chocolate. Scents of cigarettes -not fresh tobacco, but an ashtray... But yet the scents are still great. Taste of espresso and chocolate, darkened toast, toffee, bit of vanilla, maybe a bit of rum. Bit oakey. Vanilla vodka comes to mind. Very easy drinking, such really good flavors. Not a heavy stout at all. Really enjoyed this one!!

Got this in a "Beers of the World" sampler I received for my birthday.

Pours a thick, viscous black with a mahogany colored head - inch thick, creamy, dimpled.

Lots of nose. There's a slight metallic whiff, a little alcohol, malt, and what could be described as cherry liqueur.

This is a very sweet stout. Flavors of thick and sweet malt, black cherries and cherry liqueur, and a passing coffee flavor. And something else that I can only call "fresh hay", a very earthy and grassy flavor. There's a suggestion of hops and alcohol in there, but not much. Some metallic notes as well hiding. The beer has a thick, chewy mouthfeel.

Very drinkable, very pleasant and refreshing. Much more body than oatmeal stouts I've had.

Pours an inky, pitch-black with an enormous, creamy, caramel colored head that retains magnificently. Great lacing left on my glassware as well.

Aroma is of huge, sweet milk chocolate, cream, coffee tones, dark sweet malts. Yummy!!!

Taste is more sweet dark malts, milk chocolate, hints of roastiness, sweet cartamel and toffee, mild coffees. This is ridiculously smoooth...WOW.

Mouthfeel is extra creamy, chewy, and luscious with just the right amount of carbonation.

This stuff is phenomenal. One of the smoothest, richest, and downright tastiest stouts I have ever had. Ridiculously addictive and drinkable.

12 oz bottle pours dark and opaque with a small tan head. Plenty of patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate milk and a hint of coffee. Medium body is thinner than expected with a low medium carbonation. Taste is milk chocolate, RC Cola, an aggressive lactic note, and a hint of coffee. No real bitterness and a bit too sweet to have more than one.

12 ounce bottle, with no dating. Pours black with a dark tan puffy head. Nose is sweet malt and coffee notes. Medium body, creamy smooth mouthfeel. Flavor notes include sweet malt, coffee, toffee. light chocolate, also some sugary, burnt flavors present. This is a tasty and interesting stout, worth seeking out an enjoying.

Opened 12oz bottle, poured into a pint glass.

Color is a beautiful black, no head, very little lacing, a few bubbles. Smell is of chocolates (a little dark, mostly milk), a tad bit Smokey, some malts.

Taste is very creamy, clarifies smell: chocolate - although taste is more of dark chocolate than milk. A little bit of smokiness, good smooth finish. I think that this is a great beer, and I can't get enough, although it seems hard to find at times.

mouth feel is great, if not super, and this is a very smooth and drinkable beer.

Pours an amazing, ruby-tinged darkness that is a sight to behold and experience. Minimal, yet long-lasting caramel-colored head exists as wispy rings and patchwork lacing on the glass. Aromas are freshly-brewed coffee, confection sugar, with some bittersweet chocolate mixed in. I also detect just a whiff of smoky aroma, too. Taste is very good. Crispy chocolate-covered toffee, roasted coffee, caramel, creamy sweetness, and just a bit of hoppy bitterness are all found within each sip (the wife said it tasted like chocolate milk). Good, full-bodied mouthfeel. Drinkability scores high as this is a very creamy-smooth beer that just massages your palate. Very tasty and easy-to-drink. Very glad that this is a ready find in Richmond.

poured into a nonic glass from a 12oz brown bottle with a twist off cap. A beer from England made in Cincinnati,OH. They do it with cars why not beer. eh?

Black.opaqe color,1" creamy mocha head falls quick to just a thin coating with some spotty lacing.

Very sweet aroma, lots of roastyness. Coffee, chocolate.candied carmell smell, sort of like a Milky Way candy bar, would be a good description to me.

Creamy milky taste like coffee creamer, also burnt/roasty and chocolaty with a hint of vanallia. Smooth bittersweet finish with a nice chocolate overtone. The taste was a bit hard to discribe, but it was enjoyable.

Very light creamy mouthfeel feels airy.Goes down easy not as filling as it looks. Could drink a few of these, but not a beer I could drink all night. Worth a try,not as good as I once remember, but not a bad offering, worth a try.

This was by far the sweetest beer that I have ever had. Almost tasted soda sweet.

Poured a dark brown/black with garnet around the edges. The head was rocky and brownish and laced the glass on the way down. The smell was lighter than some stouts in that I did not immediately detect coffee but it was there, just not as obvious. The taste was exceptional!! I have never had a beer like this. It was sweet like a shake and almost seemed to coat the mouth the same. The mouthfeel was like velvet. I could taste it almost an hour later.

The first one went down incredibly easy but it was so sweet I don't think I could have had too many more.

Edited 5/18/2006:

Decided to edit this one rather that posting a new review. Lot's of fruit in the aroma and flavor. Kind of like dark preserved fruits. Still the most excellent beer I have tried!

Heard terrific things about this beer and am disappointed, perhaps inevitably. Perhaps this sample is old? Anyway certainly a serviceable stout, with molasses (not chocolate) and a burnt smoky undercurrent, plus what seems like a bunch of sugar dumped in and stirred around. Is that the result of the lactose? Mouthfeel thinnish and sugary, as if the corners of sugar crystals are slicing your tongue. I do like many things about this stout, including the strong (for the style) hop presence, and lingering finish. Super as a digestif, but for casual drinking it's just too sweet for me - surprising, considering how much I like sweet stouts.

Dark dark brown, almost black. Light doesn't even penetrate it. Head is brown and foamy and lingers long. Dark rings form around the glass and slowly slide down. Aroma is strong chocolate and roasted malt. Flavor is big and rich, milk chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. Aftertaste of sweet chocolate with hints of espresso and brown sugar. Surprisingly drinkable.

Pours engine-oil black from the bottle, like a good stout should. Beautiful, frothy, cocoa-colored head rises to the occassion, settling down slowly into a satisfying network of foam-islands and lacing (in a micro-sea that reminds me of the milk in your bowl after enjoying a healthy serving of cocoa puffs). Smells great - I can tell from the get-go that this is a milk stout: the velvety cream and bittersweet chocolate!

The taste is even better (I gave it the very rare, 5, because, if I can't call this exceptional, then I don't know what else in this style is). I detect not only milk chocolate (emphasis on milk), and roasted barely, but also oatmeal (this isn't an oatmeal stout, is it?). There is also a hint of coffee bean, balanced by sweet cream. Very nice.

Mouthfeel - if I didn't know better, I'd actually believe that this milk stout was made from milk (and yes this would be a good thing, in this case). At an ice cream shop near where i live, they have a guinness flavor - but perhaps a Mackeson flavor would fare better.

But, not unlike my (pleasant) experience with Young's Chocolate Stout, I really can't do more than one of these in a sitting. Too rich, maybe (as in 'death by chocolate' - "oh, that looks sinful" - triple threat, baby!)

Overall, excellent, and a very fine example of the style.

Pours thick dark brown/black with brown head which dissiaptes quickly. Aroma is chocolate and sweetness. Taste is coffee, sweetness from the lactose and maybe a little tartness in the finish. Mouthfeel is full bodied and creamy. This is a great beer, it may be a little too thick to drink more than one or two of these, but I'd highly reccomend this beer.

Very dark color and dark brown head as well, head of 1/2 inch but decreases pretty quickly. Low carbonation. Smell has a touch of blueberry to it. Starts flavorful, light bodied and fruity sweet -- finishes thicker with a nice coffee and chocolate combination. One of the better finishes in "beerdom", tasty. Gets a high mark for "swapping" two good flavor profiles in the sip.
