Somewhat Lambic, somewhat Flemish, but all of American ingenuity, Yazoo brings a patient but spontaneous taste of the of Northern Belgium to the Tennessee Valley.

Dark and burnish maroon, the Deux Rouges version of Embrace the Funk releases a short but racy foam cap while the earthy, tangy, winey and savory scents of toasted oak, pitted fruit, dried fruit, wine and balsamic offer an acidic twinge with a robust perfume that tightens the jaws and evokes mouthwatering responses. With an earthy twinge of peppercorn, weathered oak, leather and general cellar-like funk, the mossy scent complements the racier aromas perfectly.

But with the first sip, a candied flavor of hard lifesavers come to mind along with a steely caramel, savory nuttiness and and a near mocha character. With the fruitiness of red grape, cherry, blackberry, plum and blackcurrant stewing on the middle palate, a wine-like presence comes to mind. Very savory with the umami leading taste of balsamic, toast and hints of cocoa, its balance comes with a rebuttal of crabapple, grilled limes and blueberry with a slight peppery heat.

Medium bodied and highly complex, Deux Rouges finishes spicy and dry with a slightly solventy taste of acetone and acetic acids in a mouth puckering and light prickle to the tongue. Enamel-stripping in its sour effects the beer is not for the timid as its a mustier, earthier, and much more peppery experience than the current kettle sour ales that dominate the beer shelves. But for those with an adventurous palate or thirsting for a traditional sour taste, this beer provides a welcomed session.

Decanted from a 25.94 oz (750 ml) bottle into a muffin top taster pint; batch number 4.
A: Pours a cloudy, orange-brown/copper color with ochre highlights, a less than finger, orange-tan head, short-lived, largely rim retention, and little or no lacing.
S: Tangy/tart without being acrid. Aromas of caramel more than molasses, green apple, Macintosh, cranberry, raspberry, and lactate.
T: Sweet and very tart. Flavors follow the nose with an emphasis on green apple. Bitterness not appreciable.
M: Medium bodied with robust initial effervescence, but solid moderate carbonation throughout.
O: This is a delicious and fun, Flander Red, as good as any I have had before. Not sure I taste the merlot, but I can believe it. Amazing, and the bonus is I have the Davey Crockett song going through my head.

 

 

 

Carnivale Brettanomyces 2019. Draught @ Beer Temple, Amsterdam. Pours a deep red colour with a small light beige head. Aroma's are vinous, sourish and wood. Retronasal it's firm wood, vanilla, sourish and even a bit of sweetness. Flavour is moderate sour, but mild, with a hint of sweetness and vanilla. Medium bodied. Long finish, dryish and tart.

 

on tap at the source. best for not being too merlot. a good flanders.reddish colour. above average mouthfeel. Nice for the style, could show for Yazoo.

Great tasting flavors all around. At $19.99 a bottle it’s a bit much. I live in Nashville where it’s brewed so I have a lot of respect for Yazoo. I enjoyed this sour and red drink. Only complaint is the very high price! Cheers!

L - 1/2 finger brownish head atop a burgundy body.

S - vinegar, grapes, wood, funk. Damn.

T - vinegary, acidic dark fruit. Grapes, red wine,lots of wood, a bit of cheesy funk. Moderately sour and very tart. No bitterness. Low sweetness. No booziness.

F - medium body and carb.

O - the acidity of this beer is sure to kill any lingering bacteria you have in your digestive tract. I love how tart it is.
