Even more Lambic, even more Flemish, and even more of American ingenuity, Yazoo Brewing expands their Embrace the Funk palate to the cherry fruit to bring and even more patient and spontaneous taste of the of Belgium to the Tennessee Valley.
Similarly dark and burnish maroon as their original Deux Rouges, this Cherry Deux Rouges releases the same short and racy foam cap while its earthy, tangy, winey and savory scents of toasted oak, pitted fruit, dried fruit, wine and balsamic offer a stronger acidic twinge with a robust cherry scent that tightens the jaws and evokes mouthwatering responses much the same. With an earthy twinge of peppercorn, weathered oak, leather and general cellar-like funk, the mossy scent complements the fruitier aromas perfectly.
But with the first sip, a candied cherry flavor of hard lifesavers leave strong impression along with a steely caramel, savory nuttiness and and a near cola-like character. With the fruitiness of red grape, blackberry, plum and blackcurrant stewing on the middle palate, a cherry and robust red wine presence spring to mind. Very savory with the umami leading taste of balsamic, toast and hints of cocoa, its balance comes with a rebuttal of crabapple, grilled limes and blueberry with a slight peppery heat.
Medium bodied and highly complex, Cherry Deux Rouges finishes spicy and dry with a slightly solventy taste of acetone and acetic acids in a mouth puckering and light prickle to the tongue. Nearly enamel-stripping in its sour effects this beer is also not for the timid as its a mustier, earthier, and much more peppery experience than the current kettle sour ales that dominate the beer shelves. But for those with an adventurous palate or thirsting for a traditional sour taste, this beer provides another welcomed session.

500 ml bottle into tulip glass; Batch 5, 2018 vintage. Pours slightly hazy deep orange/copper/light reddish color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with solid retention, that reduces to a thin ring of lace that lingers. Minimal spotty lacing, with some clinging bubbles on the glass. Aromas of big sweet/sour red/black cherries, fruit skin/pits, almond, lemon, lime, orange, peach, plum, pear, raspberry, melon, apricot, red/green apple, red grape/wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, caramel, brown sugar, and toasted bread; with lighter notes of peppercorn, leathery/musty funk, red wine vinegar, and yeasty/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, cherries, wine barrels, and moderate dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big sweet/sour red/black cherries, fruit skin/pits, almond, lemon, lime, orange, peach, plum, pear, raspberry, melon, apricot, red/green apple, red grape/wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, caramel, brown sugar, and toasted bread; with lighter notes of peppercorn, leathery/musty funk, red wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tart/sourness, fruit tang; and light yeast/wine tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/sour cherries, fruit skin/pits, almond, lemon, lime, orange, peach, plum, pear, melon, apricot, red/green apple, red grape/wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, pepper, light leather/funk/vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, cherries, wine barrels, and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tart/sourness, and tangy fruit/wine balance; with no puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering tart/sourness and tangy fruit/wine. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, and acidic/tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 7%. Overall this is an awesome Flanders red ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, cherries, wine barrels, and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly acidic/tangy/tannic/drying finish, not overly lactic. Awesome balanced juicy/jammy cherries, Brett/bacteria complexity, wine barrel presence/integration, and malts against acidity. A really enjoyable offering, and spot on style example as expected.

A winner here. While I'm not a huge fan of the style, I really love Yazoo's dedication to toying with their base here in a very simple way. Blood red with a head that quickly fizzes. An aroma of authentic sourdough with a hint of sugar.
Anyone else picking up on the honey? I feel like I'm crazy, but it's VERY present to me. Tartness and black cherries greet me but the honey lingers long after the swig.

Appearance: Pours the color of tawny port, with a fizzy head that quickly fades to a ringlet; spotty lacing all over the tulip glass
Smell: Cherry and red wine grape with oak; some funky acidity develops as the beer warms
Taste: Red wine and cherry acidity forward with oaky barrel tones building underneath; through the middle, there is a growing acetic character married with a touch of funk; tart and fruity, in the finish
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation
Overall: I am a huge fan of the base beer and, while this is good, it comes nowhere near the mastery of the Flanders style that the base beer presents
Thanks, WPZY, for the opportunity

750ml
Gold Wax/Capped
Release Number 4
Also received the glassware from John.
Poured into a Yazoo glass a pretty nice cloudy dark reddish color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice quick/fizzy small off-white head, which leaves minimal sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, yeasty, lots of dark red cherries, tart, slight funk. The taste is pretty nice, malty, yeasty, with a nice touch of dark red cherries, nice tartness/sour, nice little funkyness. Medium body, ABV hidden very well, with a nice dry/bitter finish. Overall, a pretty tasty Flanders Red. Thanks John!

Woody balsamic and cherry stone. 4
Earthy, some lemon zest, cherry skin, shiny acetic middle that settles back into wood barrel. 4.25
Light, crisp, clean. 4
Does justice to Flanders Red and cherries both. Way nuanced, with a brightness that’s unexpected. Creeping into Cascade levels of quality. 4.5
