Yazoo Brewing Company
Tennessee, United States | website

Style: Hefeweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
An authentic example of a Bavarian Hefeweizen. “Hefe” means cloudy or yeasty and “weizen” means wheat. This beer is made with mostly wheat and uses a true Hefeweizen yeast that gives it a fruity, banana aroma with just a hint of cloves. The tart finish makes this the perfect summer beer.

one of the lighter takes on the style i have had in awhile, i can see the appeal though in a humid tennessee summer. there is almost no body to this, not that it feels watery, but its super light and i find it unbecoming to the style in general, but with the citrus notes in here, it almost flirts the wit line at times, and i think it works in this one instance. an exception to the rule if you will. sunny colored beer, hazy, but still more clear than opaque. not the big creamy head i like in these either, but i have already accepted this as something different. nose and taste of preserved lemons and belgian spicy yeast, less banana than others, which also keeps it light. its a good thing its super well charged in the feel, any less this would seem watery and lose its capacity for refreshment. one of those beers you could lose track of and drink 15 of, but i prefer a slightly meatier hefe, even though the context of this one is not lost on me. cool beer, a little basic, and a little less compelling than others they make, but tasty enough for sure.

Though its appearance was not very impressive -- given my affection for the Hefeweizen bench mark, Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier -- this Yazoo offering makes up for its shortcomings in smell, taste and mouthful. This has all the characteristics of a good Hefe, with a definite yeast, banana, clove smell and taste. This might be my favorite Yazoo offering, next to its Hop Project IPAs. A definite keeper in my mini fridge. Nice job, Yazoo.

Thanks to travita for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a very murky light yellow color with a white head. The aroma is basic hefeweizen with bananas and cloves. The flavor is similar but the bananas and wheat are much stronger than the cloves. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Got this one from ckeegan04 in the Secret Santa '08!

Pours a cloudy lemony/yellow color, minimal white head fades quickly into a foamy collar around the glass, no lacing to speak of, but a nice display of bubbles rising to the top. Lots of clove on the nose, some banana, slight lemon aroma as well. Taste follows right along, with a faint peppery hit. Mouthfeel is a little thin, zippy little bubbles, and ultimately pretty refreshing. Certainly very drinkable, but more suited to the summer months.

Served on tap in a pint glass. Hazy yellow body with a small head that faded quickly. Little lacing.

Decent aroma but light here as well. A little citrus and bready wheat. A hint of banana and spices in the background.

Solid hefeweisen flavor. Spicy yeast followed by banana and clove. Some light bubble gum in the background. More impressed with the flavor than I thought I would be.

Overall a nice representation of the style. Good for Yazoo.

Had on tap at Jim'Nick's BBQ in Murfreesboro,TN.Came in a standard pint glass a dull hazed medium golden with a thinner white head atop, knowing it wasn't in the proper glassware kept the score from going lower on the appearance.clove and banana aromas stood out most and they were pretty assertive, light toasted wheat underneath.alighter feel in the mouth but it made the beer go down even easier than many of the style.Banana and yeasy phenol flavors with a refreshing little lemony twang in the finish wich gave it a little complexity. Not a bad beer, not a style i go to very often but Iam sure it beats the TN heat in the summer.

As I was back in Nashville I picked up a bottle of this one, as I wanted to try the Hef brewed by Yazoo, the very popular brewery from here. I was generally impressed.

I would say I poured this 12oz bottle into a pint glass, but that would be a lie. Because as I opened it, I lost about 2 ounces due to a slippery table. Fail. Oh well, on with the review.

Cloudy appearance, more of a copper color than lemon color but still not far from what is to be expected. Taste was more than I expected. A lot smoother than I have come to find with a lot of hefs. The wheat and spices come out a lot in the glass. Very drinkable and for those in Tennessee or the South as a whole, this should be an easy to find winner of a hef.

Bottled date was Nov 30 2011.

Appearance is a cloudy light gold to straw with a hefty white head. The head faded quickly, leaving very little lacing. Clove scents were prominent, along with some lemon, but there was also a bitter metallic scent that was a bit off-putting. Thankfully, the taste was much better - typical hefe flavors of banana and clove, and it had a nice bubble-gum sweetness that I really enjoy in a good hefe. Carbonation was high, typical for the style. This has to be on the short list of good American-brewed hefeweizens.

A = a cloudy light orange-ish color with a 1/2" foamy head

S = citrus with a little bit of clove-like spiciness

T = a citrus taste with lemon dominating, but some banana and spices noticable

M = lighter than most hefe's I've had

D = this is a pretty good hefe and I like to drink it to support a local brewery. still can't top paulaner's hefe. if you're in nashville I'd recommend trying a pint or two of this stuff.

I had this one on tap at the Flying Saucer in Nashville last week. From my notes:

A= This hefeweizen poured a pale gold color with a moderate amount of cloudiness for the style. The 1/2" white head disappeared fairly quickly, and did not leave any lace (nor was any expected really).

S= Fruity and yeasty aroma, full of banana and clove as well as the expected wheat "twang". Exactly what you would expect from the style.

T= The flavor profile was good but not as good as the aroma. A bit muted, but still showing soft flavors of banana, clove, citrus, and of course wheat malt sweetness. Mildly tart finish.

MF= Medium bodied with a soft (in my opinion just a bit too soft) carbonation feel.

D= Not the best and not the worst by far. Solid middle of the road, no complications hefeweizen here.

12oz Bottle poured into a SurlyFest Stien.

Appearance: Pours a pale straw color. White puffy head which lingers, but not a lot of lace.

Aroma: Lots of banana, maybe a little malt. Actually it reminds me a lot of banana bread.

Taste: Sweet, the banana smell doesn't turn into a lot of banana taste. Bit of lemon, and then the traditional wheat base.

Mouthfeel: Thin, bit of fizz. But in line with the style.

Overall: Not bad. Very in line with the style, but nothing super special.

a - poured a two-fingers thick bubbly and white head into a weizen glass that disappeared way too quickly. the body was a slightly hazy, straw gold color.
s - yeasty with some straw hop aromas.
t - nice balance between lemons and bananas with a hint of yeastiness.
m - very crisp and thin, bubbly.
o - good hefe but i was very disappointed in the carbonation.

Still technically winter but a nice hot day makes me dream of summer, so why not a nice hefe. Thanks to pitasoup (reddit) for this one. And screw this lame-o screw cap.

Pours a light fizzy head that gets to almost 1 finger on my upside down pour bit the head fades almost instantly to a light covering like it was a fake head, hazy but I can see the column of sediment swirling in the middle of the murky golden wheat colored beer.

Nose is fairly typical hefe, wheat, citrus, a nice banana, hint of clove spices, a fruity and light malty aroma.

Taste is also typical, wheat flavors though a bit watery, some banana and hint of clove, slightly yeasty, although juicy. a bit malty, some light citrus, zest, bit fruity. Not much else going on but it's pretty much what it should be maybe slightly watery. Finish is fairly dry, lingering citrus, wheat, and light yeast.

Mouth is lighter bodied, good carb.

Overall not bad, nothing really wrong, typical hefe flavors, nice sumer wheat beer.

Poured from a bottle into a weisse vase, the beer is a hazy, golden straw coloring with a steady flow of carbonation bubbling in the body, and a halo of white head. Aromas of banana, bubblegum, cloves, nutmeg, all spice, grains of paradise, lemon zest, and hints of cream. Flavors are banana cream forward, very sweet and balanced, with a bready backbone, and hints of the spice blend, with clove and grains of paradise most noticeable. Very balanced. The body is smooth, but light, with a crisp edge from the carbonation. The aftertaste is a slightly spiced, sweet blend that almost tastes like banana cream pudding, with a hint of lemon zest coming through again. The finish is light, smooth, with a crispness at the very end. Refreshing beer.

a clean golden / orange-yellow pour.. slight amount of head which vanished immediately and completely.
smells of apples, grapes, raisins and banana.. interesting...
the taste starts off with your typical hefe, then jumps to a fruity strawberry banana flavor.. really tasty for a wheat beer.. and i'm barely getting any breadyness from the yeast. thinking outside the box, yazoo!
light body, high carbonation, sweet yet crisp and refreshing.
really good for the style, but i do wish it had some more visible complexion. it looks like it's just a flat beer. no lacing, no retention, carbonation isn't all that visible after the first minute (but it IS still actually there)

This beer was poured into a weizen glass at 42° from a 12 ounce bottle with a bottled on date notched on the label. Over three fingers of carbonated head resulted from the pour and swirl and pour. There was good head retention but no lacing as the head subsided. The beer was cloudy and pale golden.

Cloves and spices were predominant in the aroma. The beer also displayed fruitiness.

Spices, cloves, and bananas came across quickly. Cloves continued with the bananas fading later on.

This one was short and sweet and to the point. Good flavors were enjoyed throughout the mouth.

This was a simply made hefe with refreshing qualities. It would be a good session beer and thoroughly enjoyable during the warm summer months.

Had this on tap at Broadway Brewhouse

Pale honey gold with a finger of foamy bright white head. This beer is all kinds of hazy. Looks very enticing

The scent given off is dominated by bananas. Subtle clove background with some really nice bubblegum notes

The taste follows the nose. Great banana taste but lacking depth. Still, very refreshing

Medium bodied with ample amounts of carbonation.

I thought this was a very refreshing Hef and not a bad first beer for me to try in Nashville. I definitely recommend trying this out if you have a chance

Bottle into a pint glass.

A - Poured cloudy, golden color with lots of head that slowly dissipated leaving lots of lacing around the glass.

S - Straight forward smell of wheat and yeast. Hints of grass and floral are present as well.

T - Wheat and grass upfront followed by yeast and slight presence of hops.

M - Light bodied with high carbonation.

D - Very drinkable and tasty, very light as well. Would definitely want to drink more in the future.

Gold in color and fairly hazy in complexion. There's a fingernail of eggshell white resting on top. Moderate lacing. Aroma is of fruity banana esters. The taste is a nice blend of those banana esters from the yeast and pale wheat. The mouth is very smooth and quaffable.

Poured into weizen glass. It pours a cloudy, golden-orange color with a thin, milk-white head and minimal lacing. It smells of yeast, banana, orange, clove, wheat cracker, and a whiff of tobacco. It tastes like a classic hefeweizen, except that the flavors were rather subdued. There was less sweet citrus and it was a little more tart than I anticipated. There was no date on the bottle and the taste may have fallen off a little. That said, it's not a bad rendition of the style particularly when compared with its German cousins. It's light in body, nicely carbonated, and with an ABV of 5% it is welcome on a hot day. Overall, it's a creditable American Hefeweizen. It isn't Weihanstefphaner, Franziskaner or Ayinger but it is comparable to Flying Dog and close to Sierra Nevada's Kellerweis.

Had this on 2014-12-10 in Gallatin, TN from a bottle

A - Straw with a 1-finger white head and moderate lace

S - Banana bread with a bit of clove. Fairly mild.

T - Much like the aroma with some more clove. Touch of balancing bitterness. Dries nicely.

M - Medium body and high carbonation. Good for the style.

O - Pretty authentic hefe. Nice flavor and feel. One of the better Yazoo beers I've tried.

This stuff is everywhere in Nashville, and definitely is as good as any hefeweizen I've had from the US. Had a few of these in bottle and pints, and took my notes on the pints.

Pours a golden white with a sunny glow that makes this a good looking brew. Head is bright white, two fingers, and remains throughout the drink. Nose really lacks - slightly metallic to me, with a subtle bit of citrus.

Taste is where this one really scores - great creamy body with excellent balance of wheat and citrus, with just a hint of vanilla, and a little bit of banana. Goes down very smooth, and really is enjoyable for a single or quite a few.

Thanks goes out to JohnQVegas for this one.

Bottled On: 3rd Week of May

Pours a nice cloudy pale yellow color, nice carbonation, nice one-finger fizzy white head, with some nice sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, yeasty, with some bannanas, corinander. The taste is slighlty sweet, malty, nice touch of yeast, with some bannanas/corinander. Medium body. Drinkable, a nice thirst quencher on a hot day.
