Style: Hefeweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
An authentic example of a Bavarian Hefeweizen. “Hefe” means cloudy or yeasty and “weizen” means wheat. This beer is made with mostly wheat and uses a true Hefeweizen yeast that gives it a fruity, banana aroma with just a hint of cloves. The tart finish makes this the perfect summer beer.

Poured into weizen glass. It pours a cloudy, golden-orange color with a thin, milk-white head and minimal lacing. It smells of yeast, banana, orange, clove, wheat cracker, and a whiff of tobacco. It tastes like a classic hefeweizen, except that the flavors were rather subdued. There was less sweet citrus and it was a little more tart than I anticipated. There was no date on the bottle and the taste may have fallen off a little. That said, it's not a bad rendition of the style particularly when compared with its German cousins. It's light in body, nicely carbonated, and with an ABV of 5% it is welcome on a hot day. Overall, it's a creditable American Hefeweizen. It isn't Weihanstefphaner, Franziskaner or Ayinger but it is comparable to Flying Dog and close to Sierra Nevada's Kellerweis.

Usually, am not a hefe fan but I tried this during a brewery tour and it was awesome and really took me for a surprise. Definitely would drink this again!

Appearance: Light hazy yellow, white cap.

Aroma: Sweet malt wrapped in spiced yellow fruit.

Taste: Just the way it sniffs with the fruit and spice more prominent than in the aroma. Hops barely perceptible but a tartness emerges mid palate right through to the finish which is clean with a slightly sweet aftertaste.

Texture: Relatively thin.

Overall: A little disjointed for me, the parts are correct but don't come together in the seamless whole that the Germans pull off routinely. For effort I would grade it a C. It looks, smells and taste like a Hefe but is a mite tart to serve as an introductory brew. I might mix it with some lager and see how that turns out.

Gold in color and fairly hazy in complexion. There's a fingernail of eggshell white resting on top. Moderate lacing. Aroma is of fruity banana esters. The taste is a nice blend of those banana esters from the yeast and pale wheat. The mouth is very smooth and quaffable.
