A rich, chocolaty English Porter with a clean finish. We use the finest floor-malted Maris Otter malts from England, the same malts used for the best single-malt scotch. A portion of malted rye gives a spicy, slightly dry finish.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. had a dark brown color and an opaque texture. There was a small amount of foamy, off white head that quickly dissipated. Very little lacing here.

S: A decent aroma of chocolate, malt, rye, and mild hops.

T: Tasted of a little bit of rye (not as much as you would expect from a beer that advertises as such), lots of malt, a bit of chocolate, and some light hops notes. Kind of a disappointing flavor for the most part. It's dominated by the malt, which doesn't let the other ingredients shine.

F: A good shot of carbonation with a dry, smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: Certainly an uneven beer. It definitely has its good points, but comes up short in the end.

Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Dark brown, reddish when held up to the light. Very thin head that left quickly. Malty smell. Tasted of malt and fruit. Felt light bodied for a porter, but was a very nice beer. I'd buy again.

Had this with a very pleasant meal at a Nashville Italian restaurant that pops up first when "best pasta Nashville " is Googled, one of two local craft beers that they serve. The beer was poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Nice dark brown with a good beige but short lived head, decent lacing. It has an earthy smell that contributes to the taste. Flavor of chocolate and fruit, especially strawberries. This is followed by a spicy rye after taste. Great with Italian food.

Dark reddish brown color with orange-gold highlights at the edges.

The aroma first struck me as ripe figs and sweet raisins. Followed by touches of chocolaty roast malt. These aromas cover up any hop presence but I don't mind.

Taste is dark malt on entry, and lots of it, followed by ripe fig/raisiny sense of sweetness supported by dark, bittersweet chocolate. To be fair the dark chocolate is actually dark malt and bittersweet is the coffee like touch of roasted malt. Brewer says the addition of malted rye allows for a clean dry finish and I agree. IBU is 28 but doesn't really show but their not needed except as a counter weight.

Light medium texture.

If this one falls down anywhere it's in the texture but that's being descriptive rather than critical. The taste is full and rich, the flavors are complex and neatly woven together with just enough hop presence as not to be missed. A clean, dry, full flavor that stops just short of being assertive. Proof that flavor doesn't require a large shovel full of hops.

My first beer! It made a great first impression for "beer." Once I got into beer and came back to it. My second impression of the "Sly Rye" was less stunning. I did not care for the flavor the second time around, though the taste and feel were both what I liked about it my first go. I came back around to it. Like Dos Perros, it is a great middle-ground beer. It has some flavor and intensity to it but it is easy-going enough that I can relax with one and I would certainly recommend it to others. But perhaps that is more for sentimental value than anything.

An absolutely wonderful porter. Little head retention, and slight on aroma with only slightest hints of coffee and dark malt. The mouthfeel is spot on for a porter; not to thick, not to thin, but just right. The flavor is a bit surprising (imo) given the other unassuming qualities of the beer, overall taste is a solid malt backbone but the rye comes through unmistakably in the finish.

Head none. Initial pour produced a fizzy light brown head which ceased to exist almost immediately.

Flavor more of cocoa than candy chocolate; is the tongue tickling from the rye or the carbonation; no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl

Poured a deep dark brown with soft tan head. Aroma was roasted malt with some cocoa. Taste was initially roasted malt with a mild bitterness followed by bittersweet chocolate and finally tart cherry on the finish. The mild tartness stuck with me the most.

Had this on 2014-12-09 in Gallatin, TN from a bottle.

A - Dark brown with a 1/2-finger tan head and moderate lace.

S - Milk chocolate and mild-medium roasted grain, touch of milk. Fairly mild.

T - Slightly burnt sourdough rye bread, a bit of chocolate, mild pepper and earthy spice. Not very sweet.

M - Light body and medium-heavy carbonation. On the thin side.

O - The sourdough rye flavors in this brew diminished from what I like in a roasty porter. A decent brew but not in the same league as a Founders Porter.

Pours nice and dark. Nice lacy head. No light is penetrating this bad boy. Smell isn't very strong. Dark and rich flavor. Just right on the bitterness. Anymore and it would be too much for me. Porters aren't my favorite. I enjoyed this one though. First beer by Yazoo.


Wife's Review: "Oh its very good. It is kind of fruity isn't it? Delicious."

Fortunately for me, this was my first step outside of the standard domestic beers. As the bottle says, you're hit with a wonderfully rich flavor of chocolate (which was a bit of a shock to me) that is followed by a creamy body. It is ended with a slight bright of rye which continues to put a smile on my face with every sip. I hope to edit this as my palate evolves so that I may do this wonderful find in a sea of selections the justice I am sure it deserves. I can say that I am so impressed that a weekend sabbatical to the brewery in Nashville has been scheduled!

12 oz bottle served at about 55F in a goblet. Purchased and consumed a few months past BB date, but bought and stored refrigerated.

Flavor: Chocolate and sweet malts. Slighty sweet balance for style
Finish is a mess of flavors, probably due in part to the rye.

Feel: medium-full body with excellent, near-medium carbonation.

O: worth trying.

Pours a murky dark brew, sports some deep walnut highlights when held up to the light. Head is small side not even one finger and not much in the way of lace.

Aroma is nice malty notes, earthy peat notes, chocolate maybe slight coffee hint and touches of spice from the rye maybe.

Taste is nice malty goodness, some nice sweetness hints of chocolate covered peat. Has good down to earth notes with nut hints. Maybe some light hints of dark fruit in the finish with some light spiciness from the rye mingled with earthy herbal hop notes.

Mouthfeel is solid medium carbonation seems light but offers some pep in the finish.

Overall very nice porter, favorable easy drinking and enjoyable. Only knock really is the lack of any good head.

A - Dark brown with big brown egg shell head that maintains nicely.

S - Roasted malts, chocolate, maple syrup, brown sugar.

T - Malt forward, roasted coffee, dark chocolate, finishes with a semi bitter aftertaste.

O - Really solid porter - I enjoyed this one the most of the mixed Yazoo sixer I received from a friend in Nashville.

Served in a perfect pint glass

A - It is very dark brown with ruddy highlights. There is an inch and a half of tan head that just sits on top and is thick as hell. It reminds me of a Guinness head.

S - The smell is full of rich chocolate and fresh roasted coffee. I even get some earthy, nutty notes.

T - The taste carries what the smell brought to the party. At first I thought is was a bit mild, but these flavors jump out at you. The is some chocolate through the middle. This beer finishes with a strong black coffee taste with its bitterness.

M - Moderate to full

O - This beer fits right in with the Sam Smith's beers. This is a great English porter. It is loaded with aroma and flavor. This beer exceeded all expectations.

Poured into a Stella Artois glass

A: Dark brown with a tan one finger head that dissipates to foam. Great lacing.

S: Chocolate, cocoa, toasty.

T: Charred chocolate with light coffee notes. Malty. Sweet, Hearty. Rye slides in on the finish.

M: Medium with medium to heavy carbonation. Frothy. Dry.

O: A solid porter. Great with a chocolate chip cookie. Nice dessert beer.

Brewed on- 12/14/12

A - The porter pours out with clarity of fresh coffee...and about the same carbonation. The head never fully forms, instead islands of foam coalesce and then dissipate leaving nothing. The color is right on though.

S - The rich and roasty Maris Otter malts come wooshing up in the aroma hitting all the right notes: cocoa, leather, herbal. Even the belches smell good. Slight alcohol.

T - Creamy chocolate rounds out most of the taste profile, but there are other faint tastes of peaty-ness. Also a very mild hop presence, with a long mouth watering finish of roasty maltiness.

M - Thin and reminiscent of coca-cola. Lively carbonation with light body and a touch of smoothness.

I think that Yazoo does a great job of making solid beers that most people would approve of. But I think that drinkability is too important for them in most of their core beers. I would love to see them just crank it to 11 and see what happens...I know they want to.

taste: chocolate, lots of bready notes, coffee aftertaste, very well balanced, somewhat watery taste.

mouthfeel: really smooth, sits well on the palate

overall: great balanced porter, but wish it had a higher ABV and it would be a truly outstanding beer, just a little too watered down for my liking. You can thank tennessee beer laws for that one. I'd rather have YAZOO's SUE anyday, even though that's not a porter.

Dark tobacco juice brown with a short, 1/3rd inch head. The foam fizzles away quickly (not as fast as, say, Dr. Pepper). Come to think of it, it looks like cola. Not a speck of lace.

Tangy roast aroma with rye and cocoa. Nutty overtones. Hints of some subtle dark fruit; plum perhaps? Though it smells sharp, the taste is smoother. Dark roast, modest rye and bitter chocolate. Earthy finish. When coupled with the body the beer seems thin. Carbonation is reasonable by comparison.

Not too bad. I like it better as it warms up. Pretty dismal appearance though.

A-Pours very dark, almost black with a thin tan head that dissipates immediately.

S-Some chocolate, roasted malt, and hint of dark fruits

T-Dark fruits along with a hint of chocolate and coffee, and a touch of roasted malt

M-Syrupy and somewhat thin

D-One could drink this all day long, no problem. A true session beer.

Overall, this beer was great. It was unlike any other porter I've had before because it seemed much more dark fruit forward than roasted. It was semi-sweet, but no where near too sweet. I'm glad I tried this while in Nashville.

A very dark brown in color with a creamy tan head. Aromas of light cocoa. Taste begins with a bit of coffee, and some chocolate. Next was some sweet grain, and a hint of hops in the finish. Mouthfeel is good. Overall a quite good porter! The spiciness of he rye works well here.

A buddy brought a variety pack back from a trip to Nashville. The beer pours a nice color which was slightly less dark than Guinness, with a tan head. The rye was indeed sly - the beer wasn't as astringent as I had anticipated. While not as bitter as I would expect from a porter, I found it quite drinkable, and wouldn't hesitate to purchase it if I found it in my part of the country.

From a bottle that was bottled Mar 7 2012 and tasted Nov 2 2012

Pitch black with minimal lacing.
Heavy smell of carmel sweetness.
Taste is more like an ESB than a Porter. It is lacking a dry black malt character.

Reminds me of a Guiness Extra Stout. No real flaws but not what I look for in a Porter.
