Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
This year's Rare Beer Club/Pints for Prostates beer is Yazoo's Vérifiez Vos Fruits! A donation will be made to Pints for Prostates for every bottle sold. The hefty base beer is somewhere between a tripel and golden strong ale, and its incredibly intricate yeast profile originates from Chimay Saccharomyces and 12 (!) different strains of Brettanomyces, plus souring bacteria and over a year of aging in French oak merlot casks. It was then refermented with cranberries, sweet dark cherries and tart cherries, making this one of the most intriguing beers we have sampled in a long while.

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into snifter.
A: Pours a nice cloudy dark pink hue with 1 inch white bubbly head that fairly quickly settles to a thin skim.
S: Dark cherries, earthy funk, cinnamon, cranberries, oak, and a hint of leather. There's a bit more here too...hard to parse it all out.
T: Sour cranberries (more apparent here than in the aroma), sweet dark cherries, cinnamon, oak, earthy funk, leather, tobacco, pepper, and berries (raspberries, blackberries).
M: Medium body with the fruit sweetness hiding much of the ABV! Sour, tart, and sweet. Brett funk and spice. Lingers nicely on the palate (fruit and funk).
D: A complex brew with definitely an interesting construction (a tripel with Brett and souring bacteria, aged over a year in French oak merlot barrels, then refermented with cranberries and cherries). Let this one warm to fully enjoy. Seek it out!

5/5/19: Released 2017.
After a bit of cellaring... Poured from 750 mL bottle into snifter.
A: Pours a clear red-amber hue with 1/4 inch white head that quickly dissipates. (3.75)
S: Dark cherries, sour funk, cranberries, and a hint of grape juice. (3.75)
T: Dark cherries, tart funk, cranberries, and a hint of vanilla. (3.75)
M: Light body. Not very carbonated at this point. A bit on the flat side. Sweet and tart/sour. (3.5)
D: Definitely has lost a few steps over time. Still has remnants of its past glory. (3.75)

Small head production, but not unexpected for the style. Brew is slightly pink on the pour, and a mixture of ruby red and light brown in the glass.

Tannins, vinegar, red wine, and sour fruit on the nose. Really nice, deep, and complex blend. Cherries, oak, red wine, vanilla, leather .... really fantastic nose.

Flavor does not disappoint, with an up front sourness as strong as any in the game. Tons of vinegar, oak, cranberries, cherry pits and meat, red wine, all atop a malt base that shows in the smoothness. Really little sign that this is originally a "Belgian Tripel" given the predominance of the sour tones.

While the pucker factor makes this a sipping beer, there's really no indication the ABV is sky high - it's smooth, easy, lively.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a tulip.

Pours murky-berry-red with a fast-dissipating head, and just a hint of lacing around the glass.

The aroma is funky as promised, but not overwhelming. The other notes are there too. Cherry, strawberry, cranberry, barrels and spicy tobacco/saddle notes abound. Outstanding complexity and balance.

The flavor is a much tarter counterpoint compared with the aroma, and less balanced. The tartness is almost sweet-tart/malic acid level sour. Hints of clove/allspice show up and then give way to funk and oak. But the funk doesn't feel like someone is trying to win a prize. Nicely balanced for the most part, except for the sourness during the second half of the drink. This one might be more satisfying as part of a flight, rather than a full quaff. Just a hint of tripel-level booze warmth comes through as the brew warms, at the back of the palate.

The mouthfeel is as dry and crisp as can be, with plenty of lightness considering the ABV. But again, the tart pucker factor gets to be a bit much with a full glass. Again, this one might be better had as 4-6 oz serving, rather than a standard pour.

There is much to credit here, and plenty of complexity and funk to enjoy, but it felt a little heavy handed on the sour notes. Still, very glad to have tried this and would recommend to anyone who is loving the "sour" trend, but wants something with a little more than just tartness.
