Yazoo Brewing Company
Tennessee, United States

Style: Baltic Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The south is famous for smoking everything. Why not beer? Sue is a big, rich, smoky malt bomb of a beer, with mellow smokiness coming from barley malts smoked with cherry wood, and assertive bitterness from Galena and Perle hops to cleanse the finish.

Original tap version was 7.5% ABV, bottled version is up to 9%.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick texture. There was an inch and a half of foamy, tan-colored, somewhat long-lasting head. Good lacing.

S: An incredibly muted, underwhelming aroma of malt, a smoky quality and hops.

T: Tasted of a bit of the smokiness, light hops notes, the advertised cherry wood notes (not as much as I expected), a good amount of malt, a bit of chocolate, and coffee. A surprisingly bland, watery flavor with little character to recommend it. Not nearly as aggressive as other Baltic porters and quite tame.

F; A good amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: The overall ratings of this beer are perplexing, It's very forgettable. Wouldn't try it again.

Absolutely love the smokiness. Once they raised it to 9%, it was a game changer. Slightly bitter, which makes it not uqie a smooth, but this is an great beer.

750 ml bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger desne khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, wood smoke, nuttiness, caramel, toffee, molasses, and toasted dark bread; with lighter notes of raisin, plum, cherry, date, tobacco, leather, herbal, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready/smoked malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, wood smoke, nuttiness, caramel, toffee, molasses, and toasted dark bread; with lighter notes of raisin, plum, cherry, date, tobacco, leather, herbal, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/spicy hop and roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, wood smoke, nuttiness, caramel, toffee, molasses, toasted dark bread, light dark fruit/herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready/smoked malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from hop/roast bitterness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 9%. Overall this is a fantastic smoked Baltic porter! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready/smoked malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to sip on for the ABV. A perfectly executed style representation with the addition of cherrywood smoked malts. A really amazing offering.

Bottle poured into snifter; dark color with no carbonation, no head. I was excited to try this smoked beer! Subtle hint of smoke to the nose. Medium body with slight smokey bite on palate; the cherry wood presents a different flavor then oak (I am use too). While a decent Rausch beer, Schlenkerla remains at top of my list.

I was so impressed with this beer that I created an account exclusively to review it. I purchased a bottle from Craft Brewed in Nashville and was not prepared for the gloriousness that ensued. Wonderful and unique scent, taste, and chewy mouthfeel characteristic of a malty stout; an all-around stunning effort. Will buy it whenever and wherever I encounter it. Thanks Yazoo!

Pours opaque, dark black in color, with 1/3 inch head. Taste is deep smoke. Black licorice, roasted malt, and faint black cherry show as the beer warms. Medium heavy bodied, low carbonation, sweet with roasty bitterness. Complex and tasty. Almost tastes like a meld between a smoke beer and a quad. Very well done. Glad I got a chance to try this one.

S: smoke, chewing tobacco and some roasted malt.
T: smoke, roasted malt, bitter sweet chocolate, and slight tobacco aftertaste.
F: not very thick, but appropriate for a porter
O: this one is not for me.

750 ml bottle into a snifter.

Pours a dark brown, mostly opaque, with not very much of a head, some light lacing. Smell is roasted malt, molasses, smoke, caramel, vanilla, some chocolate. Pretty nice aroma. The taste also leads with the roasted malt, cocoa and chocolate pushing a little more to the front, vanilla, caramel, molasses, light licorice. A light bitterness throughout. Pretty smooth, medium body, good level of carbonation.

Solid flavor, great aroma. Did not think it was very smoky, but I seem to be in the minority on that, so go with the majority. Enjoyable to drink. Incredible price point, so it's well worth a purchase.

Found this at the Yazoo counter in the Nashville airport, waiting for a delayed plane. Pours dark, dark and a tan thick head. Smells smoky, tastes smokier. Heavier than most porters, and I like it. Smooth and creamy. A little dark cherry and dark chocolate, lots of roasted flavor. It's an imperial, so it's a slow sipper.

Astounding smoked layers. That is Sue. This beastly porter pours a deep black with a
nice light tan head of foam that subsides to a thick ring, thick pool, and fantastic lacing.
Nose of rich smoked malts and layers of subtle coffee and dark cocoa. Flavors follow the
nose with mellow coffee and rich cocoa awash in waves of smoked dark malts with a hint of
dark fruit in the background with a touch of cola. Solid mouth feel, medium light carbonation
and a lightly dry smoky finish with a touch of herbal hops.

Excellent.....little else to say. A real pleasure!

Dark, espresso like appearance with small tan cap and little lacing.

Aroma of deeply roasted malt with touches of dark fruit.

Flavor is heavily influenced by the roasty malt to the extent that other flavor highlights are covered over like a blanket. This singular taste lasts to the finish with lingering coffeeish bitterness in the aftertaste.

Texture is full with a low carbonation level.

This is a heavy powerhouse of a brew in the Baltic Porter style. Over the top roast bitterness for me but the house Guinness fan likes it.

Love Porters, not so sure about smoked ones, until I had this. Smoke hits you on the nose right away, followed by chocolate, roasted malt, some hops (dank not fruity). Small head recedes quickly. Felt kind of thin, but the flavor made up for it - vanilla, caramel, chocolate, maybe even dark fruit. Nice beer.

Had at Nashville airport brew kiosk. Very nice smoked beer. Full rich tasty porter with a very complimentary smokiness. Gotta say...grabbing something this good...and being able to walk airport with go cup?...Stunning.

Bottle courtesy of Toby. Tennessee , check! Nice American version of the German rauch style. Dark and smoky, like sitting around a campfire. Rich, dark malts rule.

My 49th state reviewed!

Pours a black body with a nice cascading ecru colored head. Semi-sweet chocolate hits at first followed by coffee notes, almost creamy like espresso. As it warms, creamy milk chocolate and wisps of smoke. Worth tracking down for sure.

Pours a very dark brown, essentially black and has a nice size tan foam head that dissipates somewhat quickly but leaves a little lacing. Outstanding smokey aroma, filled with chocolate, vanilla, and cherrywood malts. Amazingly well balanced porter; the malts hit up front and then the bitter hops ride through at the end. Vanilla, dark chocolate, various smokey/roasty notes. The smokiness is apparent across all aspects of this brew, really great stuff. The smokey and bitter hops are what's left to complete the mouthfeel...medium carbonation and not too thick for a porter.

Brought this one home from a work trip to Nashville, I'll need to be bringing home a few more next time!

Look: Dark brown body, thicker creamy-mocha head. Nice moving legs and clingy lacing.
Smell: Lactose, roast, and a touch of smoke.
Taste: Roast, lactose, and some superb smokiness. Bitterness is absent. Smoothness.
Feel: Thin

Overall - This is nice. I like it. Very good mouth feel and the touch of smoke gives this a leg up.

Bottle shared by Curran tonight, thanks man.

This one pours a fairly dark black, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.

Smells nice and sweetly smoky, like cherrywood smoke, with some chocolate, a bit of piney hops, and a good helping of roasted malt. Can't wait to dig into this one.

This is one of the best smoked beers I've ever had. The cherrywood smoking lends a rich smoke complexity I don't usually find in these sort of beers. The smoke is sweet and woodsy, with a good chocolate and very roasty malt backbone behind it. It's 90 IBUs, and that shows- with a big bitter kick at the end of each sip. This is an absurdly well crafted porter here- everything is done the way it should be. Beer at it's best.

This is medium bodied, with a nice and creamy mouthfeel.

An exemplary example of a dark smoked beer. Really tasty and memorable.

Granted, I am pretty averse to hop-flavor, but I thought the hops really overpowered the sweet malt flavors in this brew. While hop-lovers may enjoy, it was only barely palatable for me personally.

Had on draft at Taco Mac. I am not a huge smoke bomb fan so the fact this one is light on the smoke is appealing. Beer has a very small head - which means more for me. :-). Waiting on it to warm up to give me more flavor so the fact I already rated it pretty high says a lot. I don't taste 9%. I am highly doubtful of that, but maybe. It is a pleasant Porter with some smoke attributes. I think I mostly like it because the smoke is subtle which I appreciate. That is hard to do. I could drink this all day.

Bomber bottled 4/1/15 at 41 degrees into tulip
Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, hint of smoke at 41 degrees, mostly gone as the glass warms to 48 degrees. The chocolate becomes more prominent at 48 degrees.
Head large (6 cm, aggressive pour), light brown, frothy/creamy, diminishing to 5 mm frothy ring and partial frothy layer
Lacing fair – some broken archipelagoes of small to medium bubbles
Body dark brown/black, opaque
Flavor begins with roasted malt, a hint of chocolate, and more prominent smoke than evidenced in the nose but still much less than in a rauch beer. No hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate medium, initially creamy but seems to become more watery as it warms, lively carbonation

Appearance 4, Aroma 3.5, Flavor 4, Palate 3.5, Overall 3.75

This brew pours dark and the foamy head has a sweet smell. The taste is very smoky and has a nice blend of smoky malt, and a mix of hops that really comes off with a lot of flavor. There is not much carbonation, I think what's in there, goes to form the head. Anyway, this beer goes down smooth, and if you belch, you will taste some grill smoke.

Overall, a very solid beer. Upon my first sip I got a little bit of smoke and lots of coffee and chocolate notes. There was a little bit of fruitiness, but it was perfectly balanced with the other flavors. For a beer with such a high % ABV, it didn't taste overly boozy either, which I rather liked.

Had on draft at the airport in Nashville. True American Smoked Porter. Poured super dark chocolate black with 2 full fingers of tan head on a titled glass pour. Rick, dark hue. Lacing throughout. Really good lacing. You can smell the smoke, chocolate, dark fruits like raisins, malts and hops. Feels solid like a good porter should. Not as thick as a stout but the exact right fullness in the mouth. First taste is chocolate and smoked wood upfront. Almost like a camp fire. Dark fruits. Malts with a little hops on the back end. Not bitter. Very complex. Hides the big abv well. No burn until you are more than half way through. Truly excellent smoked porter. Not too much smoke flavor. Just right. Cheers! Well done Yazoo! OBTW, this is the BEST bang for your buck beer. It is $7 for a bomber.
