Style: Baltic Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The south is famous for smoking everything. Why not beer? Sue is a big, rich, smoky malt bomb of a beer, with mellow smokiness coming from barley malts smoked with cherry wood, and assertive bitterness from Galena and Perle hops to cleanse the finish.

Original tap version was 7.5% ABV, bottled version is up to 9%.

Had on draft at the airport in Nashville. True American Smoked Porter. Poured super dark chocolate black with 2 full fingers of tan head on a titled glass pour. Rick, dark hue. Lacing throughout. Really good lacing. You can smell the smoke, chocolate, dark fruits like raisins, malts and hops. Feels solid like a good porter should. Not as thick as a stout but the exact right fullness in the mouth. First taste is chocolate and smoked wood upfront. Almost like a camp fire. Dark fruits. Malts with a little hops on the back end. Not bitter. Very complex. Hides the big abv well. No burn until you are more than half way through. Truly excellent smoked porter. Not too much smoke flavor. Just right. Cheers! Well done Yazoo! OBTW, this is the BEST bang for your buck beer. It is $7 for a bomber.

Black. Thick, tan colored, frothy head.

Caramel malts, smoked malts, maybe some dark fruit round out the aroma. Basically, its malty smelling. I dont notice much of a smokey aroma as I was expecting to.

Heavily smoked flavor. The sip continues to get even more smoked after I swallow it. Tough enough that it reminds me a bit of a campfire and a bit of smoked whitefish.

Bold. Rich, creamy mouthfeel. Just enough carbontation. Undeniably a great beer.

One of my all time favorite porters. Delicious.

A: Dark black. Pours with two fingers of a tan head. Beautiful spiderweb lacing.

S: Raisons, chocolate, some coffee notes. A hint of smoke.

T: A smoked porter that lives up to it. Such an awesome smokiness which complements well with the raisony, chocolate and coffee notes.

F: Fuller bodied than your average porter. Thick and chewy. Moderate carbonation.

This is what I've always wanted in a Smoked Porter. Truly a great beer. Too bad it's in Nashville, but I'm glad I stopped and brought some home.

22 oz. bottle, date illegible. Purchased at Craft Brewed, Nashville, Tenn. Poured into Spiegelau stout glass on March 7, 2015.

L: Appearance is black with a rocky, light mocha-colored head. An impressive three-finger head retains its shape for a few minutes before subsiding. Great lacing; look is very-enticing.

S: Light campfire smoke aromas leap out of the glass. Dark chocolate, smoked malt, coffee, toffee and dark fruits are also present in the nose.

T: Caramel malts, roasted grain, earthy hops, toast, hint of smoke touches the lips. No noticeable alcohol despite the 9+% ABV. Delicious; a very fine drinker.

F: Medium carbonation and mouthfeel. Slightly chewy with a balanced finish.

O: The smoke is toned down a bit when compared to more rauch-forward beers like Alaskan Brewing’s Smoked Porter. However, this point enhances the beer’s drinkability factor, in my opinion. I tend to seek out this beer whenever I’m in the Nashville area. An excellent representation of a smoked porter with a very-attractive price point (under $5 a bomber).

Never even heard of this beer until I saw it on tap close by. Checked the BA score and thought why not . . . Glad I did. Very tasty.
