BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Yazoo Brewing Company
Tennessee, United States | website

Style: Altbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.10%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Check out a piece of Nashville brewing history! Gerst Brewery was the original Nashville brewery, but never recovered after prohibition. We are excited to partner with the Chandler Family, owners of the Gerst Haus Restaurant, to bring this beer back right where it belongs – Nashville, Tennessee.

This is a very “clean” beer, with mostly German malts and a hint of flaked maize, remaining as true as possible to the original Gerst recipe.

Aroma is sweet...a little creamy perhaps....with some bread there as well. Pretty nice.

Pours a clear amber color in the glass as anybody would expect. Nothing too outstanding there.

The taste makes this a real easy drinker. Quite delicious. Has a predominant grain sweetness on the body along with a bready component to it. The finish is pretty heavy on the fresh grain all the way through...hops are pretty much completely absent on this one. Again, just a real easy drinking beer. In fact, it could be a good gateway beer to craft beer.

I haven't always been a huge fan of Yazoo, but I think this beer was done pretty well.

Dark copper in color with a lightly cloudy complexion. There's a fingernail of brilliant white resting on top. Aroma is of bready to coppery malt. I taste plenty of sourdough malt. The mouth is very smooth, crisp, and refreshing.

Small off white head quickly dies with much lacing and that goes away after not to long a span of time on this clear lightish copper colored beer.

A very light sweet lightly roasted caramel malt aroma.

A light roasted caramel malt taste that borders on sweet and yet bitter with it's slight hops touches coming through.

A light dry aftertaste with some slight sweet caramel notes on this medium bodied beer.

This is a light caramel beer, kinda like a washed out Amber Bock or Shiner Bock.

Pours a semi-cloudy amber, not surprisingly, with a minimal head of carbonation and little retention at all.

Nose is chewy grains -- malty and toasty. Pretty standard amber ale.

Taste is, again, toasty and grainy, with a tinge/hint of citrus hops at finish. Overall, a sturdy and session-worthy ale, but not a game-changer.

Yazoo "Gerst Amber Ale"
12 oz. brown glass bottle
$1.50 @ Trader Joes #664, Nashville, TN

Basic amber ale brewed for the Gerst Haus restaurants. The retro label is probably the most impressive thing about it as it's quite basic; yet surprisingly found all over town on draft! I guess it fits that Yuengling type of niche, a beer that's got just a little bit more than your average American adjunct lager. Not necessarily worth trying.

Notes: Clear copper body beneath a white head. Average head retention and lacing. Limited aroma. Golden caramel and lightly honeyish malt dominates, backed by leafy and lightly herbal hops with yeasty mineral and light fruit components. Better than an average amber but not by much.

A really solid amber ale that I enjoyed much more than I expected to. No real complexity to speak of, as the palate and aroma were pretty straightforward, but the balance of hops and malt was really on-point.
