Fall LagerFall Lager

Brewed by:
Yazoo Brewing Company
Tennessee, United States

Style: German Märzen / Oktoberfest

Alcohol by volume (ABV): not listed

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
From the Yazoo newsletter:

Fall has officially arrived, the season and Yazoo Fall Lager. In years past the Yazoo Fall has been a ale but we decided to change it up this year and use a lager yeast. This gives the beer more of a even bodied mouth feel that has a full robust malty flavor. One sip and you will instantly think of the season.

A: Pours a crystal clear light golden color. Solid finger of white head...decent retention. Filmy cap with good lacing.

S: Sweet, biscuity malts with grassy hops. Not terribly complex, but good.

T: Toasted, biscuit malts with the grassy hops from the smell. There's also a slightly citrus finish lingering along with the biscuit.

M: On the thin side of medium, but that's not out of the ordinary for a smaller beer of this style. Good carbonation creates a tingling effect.

O: Highly drinkable and pretty enjoyable, Fall Lager isn't the best marzen I've had, but not the worst. Won't buy again, but wouldn't turn it down.

Update 2016: this beer is now a more amber marzen type beer. Nice malt with just a crisp finish from hops. This is not my favorite style but this is a nice example and fairly enjoyable.

Beers pours a light golden with a white head half inch head. Aroma of sweet malt and grassy hops. Flavor was pleasant malts with some hops in the back for balance. Very light, almost bland and un-Octoberfest-like for my tastes. I think someone got the summer lager recipe mixed up with the fall recipe.

Seriously, this would be very tasty in Nashville during July & August when it is 100 degrees but not in the cool October/November.

Pours a clear amber color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Decent retention and slight lacing. Smells of pale malt, sweet malt, slight caramel malt, hint of rice, hint of wheat, and a hint of citrus hops. Fits the style of a German Marzen / Oktoberfest. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, pale malt, slight wheat, hint of rice, slight citrus hops, and slight caramel malt. Overall, a more traditional Marzen with a decent blend and body.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a clear light copper with a thin white head. Somewhat poor head retention with no lacing at all.

Aroma has a metallic quality to it that is a bit off-putting. A touch of caramel along with some floral notes.

The flavor is heavy on the caramel and toffee with a nice little floral/fruity think goin on. Some floral hops come rushing in with a bitterness that is a bit over the top. I enjoy bitter beers but like them to be balance with some malt and this just does not deliver. At least the mouthfeel is pretty good with a dry finish.

Overall, a very lacking Oktoberfest. Too much bitterness and not a good balance at all. Oh well glad I could try it.

Poured from bottle into pint glass

A- Burnt orange in color with a white head that quickly dissolved into nothing.

S- Mostly bread notes with caramel malts followed by a tart floral end

T- Similar to the nose only the malt is way more prominent, hints of hops at the end.

M- Medium in body with light carbonation

O- This beer would be perfect for Octoberfest type events. That said, it's really just OK. I'm a big fan of Yazoo, but this one is pretty average.

Fresh 12 oz bottle from TN with a bottling date of 23 Sept. 2015. Served in a Belgian snifter.

Pours with an autumnal orange-amber body topped by a small head that soon dies to a thin ring. High clarity.

As the color suggests, this has some medium roast and (I think) caramel malts. Both the aroma and flavor are lightly sweet. A faint hint of vinegar in the aroma seriously detracts from the otherwise pleasant aromatics, but this doesn't carry over to the flavor (or gets masked).

Feel: medium-light body and carbonation.

Overall: a lightly sweet, malt-dominated lager.

Pours a nice honey color with a decent finger of off-white foam on top. Lacing is scant and doesn't last long. The aroma is more malt than anything else, slightly grainy but mild. The body is unsurprisingly light, but given the near absence of lacing I expected that. The flavor has some light toasty malty notes, but not much else that hits me. Frankly this beer is ok, but boring. It's a beer well suited for quaffing liberally, both for its overall mellow characteristics and for its lack of specialness. I'm not sure why the 4-pack carrier (4? really?) bears the words "brewmaster's reserve", considering the relatively pedestrian nature of this beer, but at least its only $5.

On tap at Rattle n Hum, NYC. Geat on the moment beer. Weather has taken a serious turn to seasonal & this has arrived on the scene.

Appropriate copper color, like a new penny. Creamy head leaves almost no lacing but stays to cap the drink to the end. Easy toasted malty aroma leads to a very pleasant, thirst quenching & robust mouthfeel of a brew. It may test the definition of a lager to some as it leans into the realm of an ale, but whatever YOU call it I'll say "1 fall lager, please" to have second. Here's to the rise of the Fall.

Tasted On: 10-02-2011
Freshness: Unknown
Packaging: Growler
Glassware: Mug
Purchased: Filled at Yazoo Taproom, Nashville

Pours a clear, bright amber in my mug, with little to no carbonation seen in the way of bubbles. The head is white and a modest 1 finger high and fades fairly quickly, leaving only a little lacing.

Aromas are not strong, highlighted by some floral hop notes with maybe some citrus. There's also some secondary, soft caramel malt smells.

The taste, as in the smell, seems to have the hop bitterness overshadowing the malt sweetness, in a style that should feature more malt character.

The mouthfeel is crisp, with a light body and moderate amount of carbonation. Finishes well, with a somewhat bitter aftertaste.

Overall this is an OK entry for a fall lager, but I think it comes up short in the malts to feel like an Oktoberfest.

Pours burnt amber with no head. Aroma is malt forward with a heavy dose of sweet biscuit, maybe a little nutmeg, and a kiss of some earthy hops. Flavor follows suit. A medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel with some activity, Overall, average beer from Yazoo here. Probably won't drink again.
