Andechser Vollbier HellAndechser Vollbier Hell

Brewed by:
Klosterbrauerei Andechs

Style: German Helles

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Its head is firm and fine pored. Its aroma is pure and fresh from the cellar, with soft malty accents imbued with floral hoppiness.

Its light and soft body leaves a pleasant, tangy taste in the mouth. The mild sweetness marries well with the velvety bitterness of the hops. It concludes on a rounded, harmonious note.

Andechser Vollbier Hell is therefore a classical Bavarian Vollbier.

From a 500 ml bottle (L2514 code on the bottle) to a pokal.

A-The beer is light golden-yellow in color. It is clear and shows quite a bit of active, chunky carbonation. The head is tall to start but fades to a cap that hangs around for a while. The foam is pure white. No lacing.

S-The aroma is on the sharp, hoppy end for the style with Euro-style floral flavors and some biscuit and cracker malts. Pretty clean and only semi-sweet for the style.

T-The taste is more malt forward than the smell. There is some honey, bread, and biscuit going on. I also taste a little bit of grain. The hops are milder, but still floral and lightly sharp in their taste; especially on the finish.

M-The carbonation is active, but not intrusive. The heft is medium and the beer is very drinkable.

O-This is a great lager. It drinks easily, packs a lot of flavor but doesn't overwhelm. I don't know enough about German beers to say if this is truly traditional, but a beer like this is what I think of when I think of good, light German lagers. I would happily drink more of this.

Ahh Helles lagers. I don't think I've ever drank so many examples of a style that I understood so poorly.

My lack of comprehension is no doubt compounded by the fact that many of the proper German offerings are fairly stale by the time they reach me. And, also, by the annoying trend of American brewers to amend the word "Helles" mindlessly to beer that would have once been called "blondes."

This is, I understand, a classic example of the style. And it seems pretty darn fresh.

It pours a beautiful light gold, with strong effervescence and a nice, soapy white head.

Smells crips and grassy, with light biscuity malt and mild, spicy hop. It's a delicate aroma, but assertive enough, and quite well brewed.

Tastes more complex than the aroma, but still seems very precise. Grassy, grainy start, getting fruity and crisp in the middle of the sip, and finishing with a pronounced combination of biscuits and hop spice. The finish is a bit sour, though not unpleasantly so.

I think my thoroughly American palette will always prefer the more aggressive hop presence of Czech pilseners. That does not mean, however, that I can't appreciate an excellently brewed example of this style--now that I might be getting a handle on it.

Poured from a 16.9oz bottle into a pilsener glass.

A: The beer is a light yellow color, with a large white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick but spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains grain, lager yeast, light caramelized malts and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of lager yeast, grain and a thin malt character that is quickly followed by some malt sweetness. The hops presence is very mild but complementary and brings good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, light-to-medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, very good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a long time if you’re in the mood for a lighter German-style lager.

Nice easy drinking lager with character. Bready malt notes and grassy hops blend into one great tasting beer. Has a light skunkiness on the aroma but the taste is true gold. I would call it light bodied. Epitome of a sessionable lager. Picking up some lemon zest on the finish. Very enjoyable.

Pours into a half liter stein a clear shimmering lighter golden with a large blooming bone white head that settles very nicely into a frothy mass.Toasted grains, slight mineral, and floral hops in the nose, very delicate in nature.Very dry and crisp on the palate, almost toasted cereal-like, with just a hint of sweetish pizza dough that lingers, there is a mineral element and slightly sharp hoppy finish. What a great delicate lager, great subtle flavor nuances and great to look at.A gem of a helles lager here.

I got this at Bierkraft in Brooklyn while picking up a wet hop Blue Point bottle. This refreshing and tasty beer is very bright in the glass poured from the 500 ml bottle. Golden hay notes overlay the malt nose. Great balanced flavor with plenty of heft for a helles. Even better as it warms up. This is a very well made, extremely enjoyable beer.

L: A brilliant straw gold pour kicks up a tight, persistent 3” lacy white to off foam collar with a very fine bead.

S: Spicy noble hop aromas balance light grains with a hint of sulfur.

T: Clean and smooth with moderate light Pilsner malts, a hint of sulfur and aside from the sulfur, a clean fermentation character. The noble hop character is medium low as is the Pilsner malt. Very well balanced.

F: Medium light body and medium carbonation.

O: A well balanced and easy to drink lager.

12 oz pour into a can glass

A: Bright clear gold yellow body with decent carbonation. The head is a tiny tight knit small bubbled thing.

S: Lots of herbal grass and floral notes, then you get a lot of bread and soft doughy sweetness accompanied by just the right amount of carbonation.

M: Nice crisp feel lighter to slightly medium bodied.

O: Exceptional beer flavor is right where you want it to be and the mouthfeel makes it so you could drink it for days.
