This world famous bock from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain is not meant to be rushed, but savoured slowly. As solid as a rock, Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel presides over the evening meal with a colour reminiscent of dark copper with nuances of fiery red. Its clear gleaming look harmonises with its firm, fine pored head.

Also the aroma delights the connoisseur: soft roasted accents and a nuance of dried fruit carrying a vein of caramel. This Doppelbock Dunkel from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain presents a pleasant effervescence. And then there’s the unmistakable flavour: mouthcoating and velvety, strong and yet pleasantly malty – a powerful, robust body. At the same time, it develops an easily recognisable sweetness, embraced in roasted cocoa and a light, bitter hoppiness.

Concluding with a powerful punch, this Doppelbock departs with a lingering aftertaste of quality plain chocolate. A strong Doppelbock that embodies the centuries old Benedictine brewing tradition, sip by delicious sip.

From a 500 ml bottle (date code says L1754) into a snifter.

A-The beer is a pretty garnet/ruby color. It is quite dark, but the liquid is clear and you can see through it in the light. The head starts out at nearly two fingers tall, but quickly fades to sheen on top. Foam is mocha colored. Not much carbonation and no lacing.

S-The aroma is a delicious mixture of sweet, dried and candied fruit. I smell plum and golden raisin, in particular, as well as brown sugar, a bit of earthy roasted barley, some cocoa powder, and a slight whiff of warming alcohol spiciness. Awesome.

T-The taste doesn't disappoint. There is a ton of malty, sweet fruit. Plum, raisin, and prune come to mind. I also get notes of brown sugar, toast, chocolate, and just a bit of roasted barley grain. The finish leaves my palate with a warm kiss of alcohol spice and earthy tobacco.

M-The feel is medium to full in body and slightly sticky. Carbonation is smooth.

O-Wow, what an awesome beer. This thing really blows me away. I have always enjoyed doppelbocks, but this is a whole new level of complexity, balance, and flavor. If you want hops, go elsewhere, but if you want a delicious, full-body winter beer, you will have to work hard to do better than this.

16.9 oz bottle date code L2833 into a small pokal.
L: SRM 17 Pours clear dark mahogany & tobacco brown color with a light khaki 1" head that moves quickly to edge foam, good steady fine carbonation bubbles, almost no lacing.
S: Rich roasted grains, malty, distant peat, moist tobacco, a dash of floral chocolate, a hint of dark fruits, raisins, brown bread.
T: Taste follows aroma plus sweet caramelized malts, plum, a touch of honey, light milk chocolate, darkly toasted brown bread crust, a hint of over ripe citrus, has a suggestion of smokiness in the aftertaste and slightly zesty linger.
F: Brisk then smooth medium-bodied feel with a medium-length smooth lightly drying finish. It is a little bit chest-warming.
O: Amazing taste, palate, and feel. For a moment it makes me think of a Scottish Wee Heavy except it has chocolate notes and different malt action. Quite malty overall. Rich and beautifully balanced. A companion to many foods. It is world-class in its style.

Pours a dark ruby amber with a soft cap of off white, brownish head that lingers on. The nose is bread with hints of caramel syrup. The taste is similar; dark bread, caramelized sugar, some toffee, a hint of dark fruit. The mouthfeel is full but crisp.

500mL bottle, date stamp L0893. Served in a 0.5L Weihenstephaner glass.

Appearance: Clear dark copper-amber color, with a very thin off-white head that eventually died away. Some small strands of lacing that dissipated quickly. Great color.

Smell: Malty, herbal, a little bit smoky, and a hint of licorice.

Taste: Toasted malt, noble hops, licorice, grapes. There is a lot going on here.

Mouthfeel: Good thickness, a little sticky on the teeth, prickly carbonation, and a bit of a dry finish .

Overall / Drinkability: A very different doppelbock - a lot richer in flavor and quite enjoyable. I could see myself having a second one over a long meal. Dangerously drinkable.

Quite possibly the best doppelbock I have ever had, and it might be the best beer I have had to date...

What an experience - beautiful dark caramel coloration with frothy head, a malty scent to the nose that translates to an even maltier taste on the tongue. Mouthfeel is the best ever, again, possibly - it was thick, rich, creamy, and full-bodied. I cannot remember the last time I was so impressed. Overall, it is one of the best in it's category if not *the* best. I will definitely be on the lookout for this again with the holidays approaching.

Oh lordy this is great. Pours dark, darker than expected with a lovely effervescent rise of bubbles at the end. Dark, malty brown, almost dubbel, cola dark. Aromas promising dark fruits, rum and caramel. Maltier and less sweet taste than nose would suggest with teast and bready finish. It's complex and full of character. Man, Andechs rarely put a foot wrong.

Opaque brown appearance.

Nice khaki head; minimal lace.

Burnt caramel, honeyed grain, mild cream & faint smoke notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Burnt caramel, honeyed grain & faint cream flavors.

A classic.

Appearance: Pours a clear, dark amber to deep brown color with a moderate light tan head. SRM of 18-20. (4.00)

Aroma: Strong aromas of brown bread, caramel, some hints of dark fruit of raisin, plum, grape. (4.25)

Flavor: Strong flavors of caramel, brown bread, some hints of dark fruit with some dark grains, yeasty, and bready off the end. (4.25)

Feel: Medium-bodied, strong carbonation. Toasted, mildly sweet finish. (4.25)

Compared to Weihenstephaner Korbinian 3/15/2023: Pours lighter, similar head. Stronger aromas. More brown bread, toasted grains. Less dark fruit and syrup. Less cocoa. Slightly more carbonation and yeastier.

to Ayinger Celebrator 2/2024: Pours lighter, similar aromas. Slightly less dark bread, cocoa and roast. More brown bread, caramel, toffee. Sweeter. Winner: Ayinger

Overall: An excellent doppelbock here as expected. Complex Strong and bready flavors that lean a bit toasted. Nice German yeast give a clean and dry finish. That is what makes this better than every other doppelbock I've tried. Side-by-side this is the best. (Rating: 4.29)
