Style: Doppelbock

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.10%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This world famous bock from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain is not meant to be rushed, but savoured slowly. As solid as a rock, Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel presides over the evening meal with a colour reminiscent of dark copper with nuances of fiery red. Its clear gleaming look harmonises with its firm, fine pored head.

Also the aroma delights the connoisseur: soft roasted accents and a nuance of dried fruit carrying a vein of caramel. This Doppelbock Dunkel from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain presents a pleasant effervescence. And then there’s the unmistakable flavour: mouthcoating and velvety, strong and yet pleasantly malty – a powerful, robust body. At the same time, it develops an easily recognisable sweetness, embraced in roasted cocoa and a light, bitter hoppiness.

Concluding with a powerful punch, this Doppelbock departs with a lingering aftertaste of quality plain chocolate. A strong Doppelbock that embodies the centuries old Benedictine brewing tradition, sip by delicious sip.

Nice smooth easy drinking beer, as it should be... Nothing stands out and I mean that in a good way, fine example of the style .. Maybe just a hint of too much caramel sweetness for my taste but nothing to be turned off by.

Good stuff. Slightly effervescent. Smooth. Tasty. Creamy. Malty. Right amount of rich. Perhaps a very slight too caramelish and effervescent for my taste.

Picked up for a reasonable five shekels at Downtown Crown in Gaithersburg. Classic dark brown with a big head and plenty of prune and fig notes in the nose. Big, flavorful taste, with coffee, caramel and chocolate joining the dark fruit for a trip down tastebud lane to a clean but tasty finish. A bit of smoke lingers, as it will. This is rich and smooth and sweet and balanced. Just really good.

Poured into dimpled seidel.

L: Dark ruby brown. Nice beige head, retained as a ring.

S: Lots of dark bread, some fig.

T: Same as above, dark malt, figs, very light cocoa. Boozier as it warms, but not overly.

Fee: Big, but very smooth. Some carbonation on the swallow.

No twists with this doppelbock, just a solid beer that does everything well. A grand dame of dark lager, rightfully celebrated.

This is a beautifully deep chestnut-cherry colored liquid. The head is cream colored and thick. Very malty aroma with a bit of dark fruit and bread rust underneath. Sweet and malty flavor, with light toasted flavors and a little firm hop bitterness. Full in body and smooth.

Poured 500ml bottle into weizen glass. It is a beautiful mahogany with deep amber highlights and a foamy 2.5 sandy colored head that fades slowly. Lacing is present all over my glass. Sweet aroma of dark fruits -fig, plum, and raisin- along with waves of caramel, toasted bread, and chocolate malts. Taste follows with a delightful chocolate malt flavor, caramel, ripe figs and raisins followed by hints of toffee. Feel is rich and smooth, medium bodied, soft carbonation. A very decedent and delicious dopplebock dunkel.

One of the quintessential dunkels this one is a bit on the sweeter side with that dark malt really coming through which balance out the sweetness.

Not my favorite but really appreciate what it is.

Poured into a pilsner glass, the appearance was a rich dark brown color. A rich semi-thick one finger-ed eggshell white foamy head started and dissipated. Smooth foamy rings of lace form nicely. The aroma starts with rich sweet dark fruity bread. Rich sweet roasty nuts with sweet milk chocolate malt balls comes through to blend with the Lager yeast very nicely. Robust enough to bring about caramel and toffee portions. Candied fruits somewhat show their face as it warms. The flavor takes in all of the previously mentioned aromas sweetly with a nice bready smooth aftertaste leading into a sly dark fruity sort of finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a damn nice sessionability about it. Carbonation feels low. Slight sticky but acceptable. Overall, damn nice doppelbock.

Poured into a 13 oz teku glass not sure when it was bottled. Pours a mahogany blown, with a 2 finger tanish head that leaves a thick layer of lace.

Smell is fig, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, and peanuts.

Taste follows fig, toffee, brown sugar, vanilla, and biscuits.

Mouthfeel is about medium, plenty of carbonation, a tad dry, and drinks easy enough.

Overall this is a very solid example of the style, but not really my thing.

One of my favorite styles, and when done right (Celebrator, Korbinian), the brewer is difficult to differentiate. This is a good thing. Pour is mahogany with small foam that fades to a ring. Aroma is on point with dark ripe fruits and raisins residing in a malty sweet that hints of chocolate. Flavor follows the same. Very tasty.
