Style: Doppelbock

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.10%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This world famous bock from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain is not meant to be rushed, but savoured slowly. As solid as a rock, Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel presides over the evening meal with a colour reminiscent of dark copper with nuances of fiery red. Its clear gleaming look harmonises with its firm, fine pored head.

Also the aroma delights the connoisseur: soft roasted accents and a nuance of dried fruit carrying a vein of caramel. This Doppelbock Dunkel from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain presents a pleasant effervescence. And then there’s the unmistakable flavour: mouthcoating and velvety, strong and yet pleasantly malty – a powerful, robust body. At the same time, it develops an easily recognisable sweetness, embraced in roasted cocoa and a light, bitter hoppiness.

Concluding with a powerful punch, this Doppelbock departs with a lingering aftertaste of quality plain chocolate. A strong Doppelbock that embodies the centuries old Benedictine brewing tradition, sip by delicious sip.

One of the quintessential dunkels this one is a bit on the sweeter side with that dark malt really coming through which balance out the sweetness.

Not my favorite but really appreciate what it is.

Poured into a pilsner glass, the appearance was a rich dark brown color. A rich semi-thick one finger-ed eggshell white foamy head started and dissipated. Smooth foamy rings of lace form nicely. The aroma starts with rich sweet dark fruity bread. Rich sweet roasty nuts with sweet milk chocolate malt balls comes through to blend with the Lager yeast very nicely. Robust enough to bring about caramel and toffee portions. Candied fruits somewhat show their face as it warms. The flavor takes in all of the previously mentioned aromas sweetly with a nice bready smooth aftertaste leading into a sly dark fruity sort of finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a damn nice sessionability about it. Carbonation feels low. Slight sticky but acceptable. Overall, damn nice doppelbock.

Poured into a 13 oz teku glass not sure when it was bottled. Pours a mahogany blown, with a 2 finger tanish head that leaves a thick layer of lace.

Smell is fig, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, and peanuts.

Taste follows fig, toffee, brown sugar, vanilla, and biscuits.

Mouthfeel is about medium, plenty of carbonation, a tad dry, and drinks easy enough.

Overall this is a very solid example of the style, but not really my thing.

One of my favorite styles, and when done right (Celebrator, Korbinian), the brewer is difficult to differentiate. This is a good thing. Pour is mahogany with small foam that fades to a ring. Aroma is on point with dark ripe fruits and raisins residing in a malty sweet that hints of chocolate. Flavor follows the same. Very tasty.

Short review but worth it. Smells incredible like figs, brown sugar and chocolate milk, tastes like a dark chocolate yoohoo with Kahlua.

Really good stuff.

500 mL bottle. Deep brown body with a small off-white head. Smells of caramel, bready malt, some dark fruit. Tastes very bready with some sweet caramel and brown malts. A touch of cola before becoming earthy and a little bitter. Medium bodied. Wanted to try this a long time ago. Glad I got to try it. While it’s good, it’s not all that remarkable.

Tasted from a 500 ml bottle.

L - Beautiful chestnut color with lots of red when held up to the light. Very clear. Thin but solid, creamy and resilient layer of a light tan head. Lots of lacing. A gorgeous beer.

S - Some bready malt but balance is toward slightly skunked noble hops. Not a great nose, perhaps a dated bottle?

T - Lots of bready malt; a bit of raisins and prunes add complexity to it. Mid and late palates show lightly floral hops. No yeast character, as expected for the lager.

F - Medium body. Light to moderate carbonation. Bracing hops bitterness. Light alcohol presence for a 7% ABV beer.

O - Overall a good doppelbock, but I have had others with more malt character. The aged hop aroma and lack of malt depth give me the impression I have an older bottle. As judged today, it is not my favorite German doppelbock.

Got one on tap at Churchkey, DC.
Smell of light smokey roasted grain, a very pleasant smell.
Taste some of that smokiness also. A sweet malt backbone follows that. Not much hop flavor.
A bit light aftertaste though.

An excellent (and strange) doppelbock from Andechs. Will definitely recommend it.
