Style: Doppelbock

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.10%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This world famous bock from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain is not meant to be rushed, but savoured slowly. As solid as a rock, Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel presides over the evening meal with a colour reminiscent of dark copper with nuances of fiery red. Its clear gleaming look harmonises with its firm, fine pored head.

Also the aroma delights the connoisseur: soft roasted accents and a nuance of dried fruit carrying a vein of caramel. This Doppelbock Dunkel from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain presents a pleasant effervescence. And then there’s the unmistakable flavour: mouthcoating and velvety, strong and yet pleasantly malty – a powerful, robust body. At the same time, it develops an easily recognisable sweetness, embraced in roasted cocoa and a light, bitter hoppiness.

Concluding with a powerful punch, this Doppelbock departs with a lingering aftertaste of quality plain chocolate. A strong Doppelbock that embodies the centuries old Benedictine brewing tradition, sip by delicious sip.

Dark brown with a light tan head

Has a slightly sour smell of dark bread and dried fruit

Taste is similar to smell with more sweetness. A definite caramel overtone with some molasses. The malt flavor becomes more evident as you continue to drink it.

Based on the score, I was expecting something a little better, but it is still very good

I've been wanting to try this for ages, since the days when it was an unobtainable Europe-only treasure. Picked up at a local bottle shop. Tasted 27 May 2015 and 11 August 2015.

Pours a very deep reddish brown, clear with the light behind it, but opaque brown under normal lighting. Half a finger of off-white head, good retention, okay lacing. But that color... More impressed with the head and lacing on the second go-round. Good-looking beer!

Smell is fantastic, once it warms up enough to release. Rich, sweet, bready, complex. Dark fruits, figgy goodness. Brown sugar. Fullness underneath that. Yum-town.

Taste is nearly as good, but thinner, less complex, and less sweet. Also quite bready, rather rich. A little grape-y. Tasty. And once again, I'm liking it even better on my second tasting.

Feel is stellar, though it declines as it warms up, crossing paths with the improving smell and taste. Medium-bodied with a delightful low fuzz of carbonation, the perfect amount of vibrancy for this weighty beer.

This is a darn tasty doppelbock. It got much better as it warmed up, and the sweet delicacies started to come out. Holds its own with the rest I've had. Yummy stuff, and I'm very happy it's now (somewhat) readily available.

Dark mahogany color, with tan head. Dark dried fruits (fig, raisin, prune) on the nose with a hint of chocolate. Rich caramel flavors along with some chocolate. Rich mouthfeel. Really excellent brew. great for a fall day outside.
