Style: Doppelbock

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.10%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This world famous bock from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain is not meant to be rushed, but savoured slowly. As solid as a rock, Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel presides over the evening meal with a colour reminiscent of dark copper with nuances of fiery red. Its clear gleaming look harmonises with its firm, fine pored head.

Also the aroma delights the connoisseur: soft roasted accents and a nuance of dried fruit carrying a vein of caramel. This Doppelbock Dunkel from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain presents a pleasant effervescence. And then there’s the unmistakable flavour: mouthcoating and velvety, strong and yet pleasantly malty – a powerful, robust body. At the same time, it develops an easily recognisable sweetness, embraced in roasted cocoa and a light, bitter hoppiness.

Concluding with a powerful punch, this Doppelbock departs with a lingering aftertaste of quality plain chocolate. A strong Doppelbock that embodies the centuries old Benedictine brewing tradition, sip by delicious sip.

I picked this up at Utobeer in Borough Market in London. Poured this .5 litre brown bottle into a .5 litre Spaten mug. Coded: 111007. The body was a clear clover honey/amber color. The two fingers of khaki, coarse bubbles faded moderately slow.

Smell was rich caramel. Sugary. Lightly bready. Nutty. Faint cherries and raisin bread.

Taste was spicy, roasted bitterness up front. Dates. A sort of liquid sweet-roll, but countered with enough hops to prevent it from being overwhelming. Truly like a dessert to me. Extremely drinkable.

Mouthfeel was medium in body with a zippy bite of carbonation. This is a very well constructed beer (like the world doesn't know that already). Cheers.

150 reviews as of this writing. Thanks to redhaze for the chance to try this gem. I've had a number of US interpretations of this style and enjoyed them. This.... This beer set's the standard for me and is one I'd be happy to enjoy again except for the whole getting access to it. If you like your dopplebock malty, crisp and oh so easy to quaff try this one. If you get the chance definitely go for it!

I've had this one on tap, served in a 1 liter glass directly at Andechs monastery. The trip and ambiance played certainly influence my perception and appreciation of this beer. Very nice dark roasted malts without being too sweet which makes it one of the most easy drinking doppelbock. Wish they would import bottles of this in Canada.

500 ml bottle, had a bottle date but I forgot to write it down, poured into a snifter.

A- Pours a dark brown color with an inch of off-white head, very good retention and lacing.

S- Sweet aroma of dark fruit, caramel, brown sugar and bread. This actually smells really, really nice. I'm usually not into doppelbocks because of excessive sweetness, but the aroma here is sweet and complex without overdoing it.

T- Again, not too sweet at all. Flavor has a really nice dark fruit component, along with nuts, bread, caramel and brown sugar.

M- Medium-bodied, soft, creamy and smooth.

O- I was very pleasantly surprised by this, it's damn tasty stuff, easily my new favorite in the entire style.

A brownish dense head disappears into a very thin color. The color is impressive: a beautiful brown-red, almost purple, opaque. The smell is of dark malts, non sweet caramel, and a warming winy grapes aspect. The taste is very enjoyable and complex. Raisins with a sweet and refreshing citric aspect (almost like the soda aspect of Belgian stouts); then dark malts, with a thick almost chewy impression of chocolate; the chocolate announces the veil of hoppiness that covers the mouth without overwhelming it. Finally, a warm alcohol feeling. Very well balanced. My favorite Doppelbock .
