This world famous bock from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain is not meant to be rushed, but savoured slowly. As solid as a rock, Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel presides over the evening meal with a colour reminiscent of dark copper with nuances of fiery red. Its clear gleaming look harmonises with its firm, fine pored head.

Also the aroma delights the connoisseur: soft roasted accents and a nuance of dried fruit carrying a vein of caramel. This Doppelbock Dunkel from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain presents a pleasant effervescence. And then there’s the unmistakable flavour: mouthcoating and velvety, strong and yet pleasantly malty – a powerful, robust body. At the same time, it develops an easily recognisable sweetness, embraced in roasted cocoa and a light, bitter hoppiness.

Had this on 2013-10-30 in Columbia, PA and again on 2014-02-16, side-by-side with an Ayinger Celebrator.

A - Pretty clear dark brown with ruby highlights. 2-finger light tan head that sticks around and leaves moderate lacing.

S - Rich, lightly toasted dark sour wheat bread, dark fruit and some earthy spice. Not very strong.

T - Rich dark malt with plenty of dark fruit accents like tart very ripe figs, cherries and plums. Light caramel sweetness. There's a nice hop bite on the finish that balances with the dark fruit. Very rich and satisfying.

M - Medium-heavy body and light-medium carbonation. Substantial going down but dries nicely. Really good, thick feel.

O - See my Ayinger review for more detail but with the Ayinger, the contrast between the various flavors is more pronounced / bolder. The Andech's has more of an integrated / balanced flavor plus a firmer mouthfeel. In this head-to-head comparison, the Andech's wins by a nose. This is the best doppelbock I've ever had. I enjoyed everything about it and look forward to having more no that they are available in PA.

Worthy of the reputation. Pours a dark copper with a head that stays. Smells of fig and plumb, so the hops comes as a pleasant surprise. So much fruit and slice that it has a bit of a Abby taste. Right up there with Celebrator. On tap at the Sunnyvale beer garden.

THE doppelbock in my book, with an incredible caramel-chocolate flavor profile. It teeters on the edge of getting too sweet, but an earthiness, ostensibly from the hops, reins it all in. Truly delightful and one that holds up surprisingly well, as I've had bottles a good year and a half from filling that were still in good condition.

The Andechser Doppelbock is the top rated Doppelbock on BeerAdvocate.com; it was the first
Dopppelbock I tried and it was at Brauhaus with Paul. This Doppelbock pours out dark brown
with a nice foamy head. It smells a little malty and when I tasted it, it was unexpectedly
Belgian. Paul who was with me had a taste and felt that it tasted like a Belgian trappist
which he felt to be strong, rich and fruity. Yes the Andech Doppelbock had a fruity taste
to it; the maltiness is present but not as pronounced as I would expect albeit the fact that
this is my first Doppelbock. The mouth feel was slightly thicker than medium bodied which
is good; the after taste was more fruity than malty. For a seemingly thick and dark beer
going mildly strong at 7.1 ABV this Doppelbock is really drinkable and actually it was
quite a pleasure to drink it. My only issue is again the lack of malt and the strange
ressemblance to Belgian fruity dark ales. I would like a Doppelbock to be really majorly
malty but then again this is my first Doppelbock and I liked it anyway, regardless of the
style's specificities. I have another Doppelbock in my fridge to benchmark this with; that
is none other than Paulaner's Salvator which I am pretty curious about and I would probably
be trying it pretty soon.

500ml bottle poured into a mug...

A - Brownish/ruby red appearance with a one finger head. Decent lace retention on the glass

S - Nothing discernible for me. Some light malts and a little caramel possibly, a little bit of a letdown

T - WOW! An absolute stud. Malts, toffee, caramel, cocoa, milk chocolate. They all meld together perfectly. Pretty complex and unlike anything I have tasted. This is so different and so good!

M - Medium to full body feel, mild carbonation that rolls off the palate pretty smooth

O - Most importantly the taste takes the cake here. It totally raises the stock for me in this one. So unique and savoring. Although the other attributes aren't quite there, the taste of this beer is truly world class.

Smooth; not too carbonated, very malty, and at 7.1%, you can drink a couple, and still carry on a cogent conversation. And at a retail price of well under $5 for a Pint, you can buy a couple, and still pay the rent.

Purchased on New Year's Eve at RSVP in Portland, Maine, I'll make this one a frequent purchase in 2014!

Poured from a bottle into a snifter. Beautiful dark brown with a wonderful thick fluffy beige head and nice lacing. Smoky, earthy smell, very fragrant. Bold taste: smoke, chocolate, dark toaste. Sweet and malty with just a hint of bitterness. Great beer!

Fiery red-orange-dark bronze with brighter orange highlights. The beer is absolutely pristine and is a marvelous, multi-hued prism when bright sunlight is permitted entry. Atop the liquid is a glorious crown of foam that is the color and consistency of light brown sugar mousse. Enough lace sticks to keep visual interest sky-high.

The aroma is chock full of roasted malt, dark fruit and earthy hops. More nostril-filling power would be welcome, but what's here is still very nice. My hope is that some of the nose's best tendencies will be amplified on the palate. If so, then this doppelbock will more than live up to its reputation.

This is exceptional beer and is truly world-class. While it isn't as huge as anticipated (I keep having to remind myself that doppelbocks are lagers) it's definitely on the hefty side for the style... and that's a very good thing indeed. More malt is almost always my preference when it comes to malt-dominant beer.

Dark fruits (dates primarily) lead the way on the palate, followed closely by toasted brown bread, dark caramel, cocoa and chicory coffee. Even though dates are prominent, the beer isn't all that sweet. In fact, I'd say that sweet and bitter fight to a virtual draw. The long finish even makes a move toward dry and clean; remarkable in such a malty beer.

The mouthfeel is pretty damn close to big lager perfection. Only the best beer on the planet is able to deliver this amount of mouthfilling volume coupled with a velvety suppleness and a flavor-sustaining light viscosity on the finish. A subdued amount of carbonation is icing on the doppelbock cake.

Klosterbrauerei Andechs has had since the Middle Ages to perfect this beer. One sip is all it takes to prove that they did so long, long ago. I might not even mind a several week, monk-like fast if I had Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel to sustain me for the duration. This is one of the three best versions of this style that I've ever had the pleasure to drink. I'd like to thank the incomparable feloniousmonk for his much appreciated generosity.

L: Dark, , near brown colored beer, semi-clear with bright ruby accents around the edge of the glass. Poured a light head that slowly fades away. No lacing.
S: Amazing. Has hints of dates and purple grapes, also smells like fresh chocolate. Very hearty and sweet.
T: Repeat of the smell, with dark fruit qualities layered within a light chocolate maltiness. Slight similar burnt notes to a porter but much lighter. Slightly dry/bitter on the finish
F: Very rich, mildly acrid/astringent. Body is full, carbonation is on the higher end. Drinks a little heavy, a bit of a sipper.
O: Great doppelbock, never tried before, will certainly drink again.

Served from a 16.9oz (0.5L) bottle into a Guinness 250th anniversary Imperial Pint. Fridge temp.

Grabbed by a coworker for me while he was in Germany.

Appearance- Relatively clear amber/brown with one finger of bubbly white head that didn't last long leaving a pleasant ring around the beer.

Smell- Caramel malts, mild hop earthy aroma, metalicy smells, maybe some dark stone fruit. Not too impressive. Mostly just roasted malts.

Taste- Caramel, toffee, cherry, plum, light roasty coffee, and a heavily roasted malt backbone. On the sweeter side, but not cloying by any means.Perfect example of a Dopplebock. Alcohol is hidden as well.

Mouthfeel- Smooth and rich (but not too viscous) with moderate carbonation. No booze burn at all. Very creamy throughout.

Overall- One of the best Dopplebocks I've had. Truly a fantastic example of the style.

A: Pours a deep brown color with a one finger off white head. Recedes down to a thin cap fairly quickly.

S: A big overlying rye bread note, caramel, toasted bread crust, grain, light powdered cocoa, earthy malt and some light dark fruit notes.

T: A rich wave of rye and nuttiness right away. Middle is primarily dark fruit, with a bit of banana and raisin skin. Light cocoa, molasses and rye crust on the finish. Very well balanced. A really solid doppel.

Clear amber-orange. Nicely formed head. Lasts a bit too.

Grape aroma with a touch too heavy caramel.

Velvety, big body. Light carbonation.

Not too sweet fruit. Heaviest on fig with a little banana. Not too sweet caramel. Bit of bready crust. Also get some hay/wheat in there. Hint of clove spice. Departs with some chocolate elements. Banana-raisin bread pudding.

This is an outstanding doppelbock. Pours a gorgeous dark ruby color with two fingers of light tan, smooth head which slowly dissipates while leaving plenty of lacing. Smell is of nutty malt and dark fruit, although not terribly strong. Taste is rich and complex, heavy on hazelnuts, raisins, and a light bitterness and herbal flavor from the hops. Delicious. Mouthfeel is a little lighter than average (to be expected at 7.1%) but very smooth, pretty true to style. Overall this is a world class doppelbock, a little lighter than most but extremely rich and flavorful.

This Doppelbock is *VERY* long-time "Want" for me, finally had the chance to try this at Portland International Beerfest 2013. A 4 oz. pour (clean glass, first taster of the day) - 1 ticket/$1!.

A: Deep amber with a distinctly reddish undertone in the sunlight. Good, steady carbonation rises and generous lacing falls from a dense ivory head that starts at nearly a finger. Would love to see this as a full pour in "proper" glassware, but this fest's glassware does it justice.

S: A bit sweet and floral, something akin to caramel apple, candied nuts and honey.

T: Plenty of fruit: apple, pear, fig and a little woody brandy. Sugary and malty/grainy (pecan pie or brittle?), but then an ashy-dry bittering follows in the finish. Sturdy and complex flavors, quite well-balanced.

M: Awesome smoothness/creaminess - probably my favorite attribute. Vaguely sticky, but not too starchy/gummy. 7% alcohol is well-concealed.

O: What a treat to try, among my favorites of this terrific festival and among the very best of this beer style that I've tried. Extremely easy to drink (as were the other three from Andechs at PIB, I should add...). Sweet at times, fruity, nutty, and a balanced bitterness - bold and satisfying. Very glad to have tried this!

Extremely dark brown body with a reddish touch and a caramel head.
Wide malty taste but not too heavy. Finish with a very strong but not annoying hint of licorize.
Awesome beer and for me a clear reference for the Doppelbock-style.
If I had to choose three beers to take with me to a lonely island this one would be on the shortlist.

Thanks to kmpitz2 who hand carried this back to the USA.

Pours into my glass a deep amber/brown with a big creamy white head and great clarity. Looks quite inviting in my glass. Aromas start with deep rich malts. Caramel, sweetbread, a touch nutty and doughy. Just intensely malty with toffee accents as well. Rich, deep and enticing.

First sip brings caramel and toffee German malts rolling all over the place. Doughy with a bit of nuttiness that moves into some dark fruit flavors as well. Flows down with rich lingering malts and a touch of bitterness. Not the most complex of beers but a clean, tasty malt bomb that does not disappoint.

Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with solid medium body. Quite drinkable and somewhat like a meal in a glass. "Liquid bread" is not a bad way to describe this one. Well worth tracking down if you love doppelbocks. I would love to try this at the source sometime.

A: Pours a dark purple/brown color with a large egg-white head on top, rather foamy. Decent retention that slowly reduces to a thin cap on top. Thin, soapy lacing forms around the entire glass.

S: Sweet aroma with some caramel, dark fruit, plum, raisins, a little bit of chocolate, and brown sugar.

T: Some more dark fruit, dates, plums, and a little raisin. There is some brown sugar, caramel, and toffee, and a little bit of cola. Hint of red apple on the finish.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Incredibly smooth and creamy. No hint of alcohol at all. Slightly dry finish.

O: Very impressed. Great flavor profile and extremely easy drinking. Mouthfeel is superb.

Pours a beautiful crisp, clear brown with red and gold highlights. Pours produces a decent head that has staying power and kicks off tremendous sheets of lace. Aroma, dark malt, toffee, wheat and spice. I swore I got a whiff of hazelnuts also.
Taste is truly to behold. Very wet malt and toffee front backed with a spicy yeast finish with a hint of alcohol power. To me this prototypical German taste and if I close my eyes I can feel myself singing county road and the Star-Spangled banner in the Hofbrau House in Munich.
Truly beautiful beer and need to find a way to import to the US (besides carry-on luggage.)

Brown/Red colour.

This is a really good Doppelbock with a distinguished taste/smell of dark bread. Very malty wich is pretty common for the style, but not too sweet.

Had this in smaller doses a couple times now so I thought I'd throw up a minimal review since I like it so much.

Pours a light brown with a slight bit of head. The aroma is light and is mostly nuttiness and some musty malt. The flavor is very nutty with a caramel maltiness. It is fairly light and lacking rich complexity, but it is a damn near a perfect session style ale (well, the ABV is a bit too high for that perhaps). If this was imported it would possibly be my "go to" beer for everyday drinking situations. Just so well balanced and zero off-flavors.

A- Dark brown with red hints if seen through light. A medium beige head recedes quickly leaving good lacing

S- Malt sweetness with some caramel/dark fruit hints. A faint smoked feel brings some balance to the sweetness

T- Mostly what the smell suggest. Sweet malt to give a light bready character, some caramel and maybe some clove hints at times. Maybe also some vague hop bitterness in the finish. Quite boring

M- Light for the style, with not enough carbonation in my opinion. Goes down easy without much to be worth remembering

D- Extremely drinkable for its ABV, but not that interesting. Still a beer that i would happily drink if there was nothing better avialable

Overall an enjoyable beer but i'm really suprised with such a high average rating. This beer had no bad flavours, nor bad aromas, nor nothing that may suggest a bad pouring, so i assume there was nothing wrong with mine. Just to make sure i was not wrong will try it again and re-review if necessary

As prosimed, after scoring this beer a c+ i went back to it (november 22 2011) and it is now quite obvious that the on-tap version i had was a bit off. Second try is a 500ml bottle, i'm just pointing out differences between first and second tasting

A- Same colour and all but very much better retention

S- A roasted feel is now more lively, with some toffee hints as well

T- Not as sweet as first tasting. Still some caramel and bready notes, but now much more in balance with a strong chocolate/toffee taste. Some hints of roastiness and dark fruits as well. Kinda reminds of a porter

M- mouthfeel was quite watery on first tasting, now it is not. Dense, creamy body, but still very smooth with just a hint of carbonation

O- Amazing beer. Strong and dense in body and flavour but still as amazingly drinkable and balanced as the best bavarian beers are

Served in a 1-Liter mug. Brown in color with ruby hightlights and a large, beige head. Really pleasant aroma, heavy on roasted malts, raisin, and fig. I found myself going back over and over again to smell it. Medium bodied, not overly sweet as some dopplebocks can be. A touch of alcohol in the finish. Overall, a very enjoyable beer and maybe the best in its style I have had to date. One I would order again in a heartbeat.

Long-awaited, much anticipated -- was surprised to find this sooner-than-expected.

Half-liter bottle with an odd coding that I hope isn't the bottling date (would decipher around June of 13, so I'm going to ignore it and hope for the best).

A -- Clear, deep chestnut color with ruby highlights and smooth, tan head that settles slowly, leaving a thin, but presentable cap.

S -- Dark breadcrusts, mild molasses, some light earthiness and fruit, and mellow pepperiness from alcohol.

T -- Rich, bready malt -- very pumpernickel-like with a sweet molasses and bready toastiness. There is some underlying bitterness from hops in balance, a light hint of dark fruits, more bready sweetness in the finish and a dry, peppery character from alcohol in the aftertaste -- but stopping just shy of hot.

M -- Mouthfeel is soft and smooth with a dry finish and a medium body bordering on full.

O -- A very classic rendition of the style, yet definitely projecting its own character to distinguish itself. The Andechs is a little drier in the finish than other Doppels, yet the dark bread character up front is just what German (specifically Bavarian) brewers produce so much better than the majority of US micros can duplicate.

Have never had the opportunity to sample this brew so I have no idea what it tastes like fresh, and I was skeptical of a 7% doppelbock holding up well. Boy was my skepticism wrong!

Poured a light brown mahoghany in color w/ a 1 finger creamy tan head, that left nice lacing all over the glass. The nose was of light toffee, caramel, dark fruits, and a touch of bread dough. The taste made the nose seem pretty muted. Deep, rich dark fruits in your face w/ an interesting spiciness in the middle(reminds me almost of a scotch ale), and a finish of breadiness. This brew is really all about the malts. The mouthfeel was medium bodied and lush. I could drink this all night w/ ease! The Germans pride themselves on making great session beers and this higher ABV version is no exception.

Overall, tremendous brew from Andescher! I thought this brew would be hyped simply because it is non-imported, but it is a delightful brew to sip. Basically non-imported + tremendous brew = ISO. Glad I have another bottle.

A: Pours deep amber with a large thick, very thick off-white head that takes a really long time to dissipate. Pretty nice lacings.

S: Sweet rich malty smell. Dark dried fruits, galore. Nothing else - they don't mess with the basics. Neat and clean.

T: Sweet malt, very sweet - just right. The dark dried fruits dominates (there are so many different ones; figs, plums, raisins, cherries to mention a few). Faint bitter hops.

M: Sadly this is the weakest part of any Doppelbock; aftertaste is to short. Body is full and carb. is mild.

D: Doppelbocks are great and this one is a great exampel of the style. The brewer doesn't mess with anything besides the basics and that is what makes this beer fantastic. The only thing that could make this beer better is time - I'm so happy that I bought myself a whole case and put most of it in my beer cellar for the future. Maybe I'll review another bottle from this batch in a couple of years after storing it properly...
