BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Klosterbrauerei Andechs
Germany

Style: Dunkelweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This dark Weissbier retains its aromatic character thanks to the select choice of Hallertau aroma hops and highest quality Bavarian wheat and dark barley malts.

Its characteristic, distinctive maroon colour is a feast for the eyes. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. The perfect complement is provided by the very creamy, fine pored head. This dark Weissbier from the Holy Mountain will delight connoisseurs with a harmonious interplay of fruity odours, above all ripe bananas and pineapple, with undertones of caramel and cocoa.

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel teases the tongue with a delicate tanginess carried by a round, soft body. A light caramel sweetness harmonises well with the fine hoppy bitterness. It concludes on a soft and refreshing note.

Dark brown and almost opaque. Impressive head with good retention and lace formation. Ripe banana hits first on the nose. More like banana bread actually. Floral hoppiness. Toffee malt profile. Not much depth of aroma but what's there is nice.

Light in flavor profile, malt-forward but well-balanced by bitterness. Banana and clove notes. Nice malty sweetness. Prickly carbonation that takes a while to settle down. Good flavor for only a 5% ABV beer. This is a solid, if unspectacular dark wheat.

I must start off by saying how much of a fan I am of Andechser Weissbier Hell. It is my favorite hefeweizen, beating out Weihenstephaner and Ayinger by a slight margin. Needless to say, expectations were high for the Dunkel.

Look: Deep reddish-brown color with a thick, creamy, off-white head that has great retention. Very cloudy after adding the yeast from the bottle.

Smell: Strong banana aroma with some light clove and even a bit of vanilla. Caramel and bready malts.

Taste: Plenty of fruit and spice. Banana, clove, wheat, caramel, and toasted malt.

Feel: Medium-light bodied with a dry finish. Body was a little too thin and I would have like it to be creamier. Lots of carbonation gave a fizzy, effervescent feel to it on the tongue.

Overall: All of the flavors you'd expect from a weissbier, but the thin texture hurts it a bit. The rich malt provides a bit of added complexity, but also holds it back from being refreshing and quenching.

My first Andechs beer.Pours into a weizen glass a chestnut brown with a large blooming tan head atop.Roasted bananas in the nose along with clove and chocolate.Bananas are big on the palate with a bit of nuttiness and chocolate, the phenols are not in your face.Wow a great dunkel weiss here flavor packed but subtle.

Thanks to blutt59 for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours an amber color with a white head. The aroma is dark fruit, yeast and caramel. The flavor is similar with dark fruit, caramel, toffee, yeast, bananas and cloves. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very good dunkelweizen from a very good brewery.

We need to import more of this over here. The aroma of fresh baked banana bread and a rich ripe fruit and caramel taste to match. Unfiltered and dark with more ester flavor than most of the other German imports typically available. Exceptionally smooth with a slight tart finish.

After going through several bottles from my local bottle shop (Capone's) I found a distributor who sells it by the case. This is the closest beer I have found to my all time favorite "Black Walnut Dunkel" by Artisan which is no longer available since it was apparently only brewed once. This has a nutty, tannic finish as one would expect from black walnuts.

Bottle shared by Joe - much obliged!

Pours a hazy light brown color with a 1.5-finger tan head. The head recedes slowly into a thin layer on top leaving thick lacing.

Smells of caramel malts overloaded with bruised banana and various spices. As the beer warms the sweetness in the aroma subsides just a bit.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Smooth caramel malt flavors kick things off and are almost immediately overtaken by strong spices - clove mostly with hints of nutmeg and brown sugar. Midway through the sip hints of banana flavors work their way into things before they fade out into mildly earthy hops. The hop, malt, and spices carry through to a crisp and mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a smooth thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could have a few more.

Overall neither the aroma nor the flavors blew me away with this beer although both were very solid. Everything else was solidly above average making this beer well worth a shot.

An excellent little wheat dunkle, very smooth, nice chocolatey banana flavour, and even though its dark i thought it was even refreshing, excellent stuff.

Powerful aroma of mixed spices fruit, yeast and sweetness...deep rich colour, all matched to the taste...deep, rich, fruity, real depth of character, though the powerful tastes do not encourage it as a session beer, maybe a bit too sweet for that in my opinion, but - as always with Andechs - a wonderful beer not to be missed.

Served in improper glassware, a snifter, but that's all I've got available.

Wondrous head, chewy and foamy, oatmeal-colored and persistent. Lace is plentiful. The body is surprisingly dark, almost pitch-black. I guess I was expecting something more dark brown. Either way, it's elegant. 5

Aromas of dark bread, rye, toast and caramel all occur to me. Molasses becomes more noticeable with a few more passes of the nose. 4.25

Think raisin bran without the raisins and that's about right for the taste. Very cereal-like with a touch of sweet molasses. Clove and banana become more noticeable as the beer warms and linger on the finish. 3.5

Lighter in the body than I was expecting, but also lighter in carbonation, so the feel here is decent. I'd probably like a bit more body, but you have to appreciate how easily this brew drinks. The finish is grainy and again leaves a feel in the mouth like cereal, which makes it feel quite hearty. 3.75

Not as lovely as their Helles and not at the level of Weihenstephaner, but this brew is plenty enjoyable.

Appearance - Pours cola brown with a frothy, near two-finger width off-white head. Good retention, resulting in a solid film of suds stretching across the surface. Decent lacing, with broken lines and spotting making up the bulk of it.

Smell - The nose is greeted with toffee/caramel, banana, clove and slight tartness.

Taste - A little darker than the nose would indicate. Caramel and slight toffee that is met with a faint, roasty malt flavor. Fair touch of banana and clove, but lacks ideal strength. Light tartness creeps into the finish.

Mouthfeel - Light-bodied with low carbonation. Slightly fluffy texture, going down incredibly easy, but leaving a bit to be desired. Lightly dry finish.

Overall - Not an especially impressive example of the style. A bit weak in flavor and body. Drinkable, but quickly forgettable.

Pours a finger and half of head on a cloudy light brown colored body.
The aroma is wet grain, light caramel and slight chocolate.
The taste is amazing: caramel, toasted malt, plum and a little banana. Excellent balance.
The texture is smooth and soft with a nice fizzy.
The taste and texture are both outstanding.
