Andechs Weissbier DunkelAndechs Weissbier Dunkel

Brewed by:
Klosterbrauerei Andechs

Style: Dunkelweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This dark Weissbier retains its aromatic character thanks to the select choice of Hallertau aroma hops and highest quality Bavarian wheat and dark barley malts.

Its characteristic, distinctive maroon colour is a feast for the eyes. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. The perfect complement is provided by the very creamy, fine pored head. This dark Weissbier from the Holy Mountain will delight connoisseurs with a harmonious interplay of fruity odours, above all ripe bananas and pineapple, with undertones of caramel and cocoa.

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel teases the tongue with a delicate tanginess carried by a round, soft body. A light caramel sweetness harmonises well with the fine hoppy bitterness. It concludes on a soft and refreshing note.

Taste: caramel semi sweet toasted malt, wheat, bread brown sugar spice smooth finish. Same with the nose. Brown cola hue, mostly clear, with tall tan carbonated head and ring of lattice. Medium body. Again would pair well with many dishes.

Relative to its style which has few good-lookers, Andechs has produced one only slightly above average.
I expect Smells like their helles weiss, but I figure that dark bananas means spoiled. So they handled aroma correctly, also.
Initial Tastes are slightly better, mostly for the balance and refreshment; but still part of an integrated beer.
While I am not a fan of this much carbonation in dark beers, Andechs handles this well too. (I suppose not much can be done about the clubs of yeast... it does with the style.
Overall: a nice dark wheat beer, modest in its approach and balanced throughout. A great value.

Pours dark brown to orange/ruby in the neck with a 2 1/2 finger chunky, dark tan head that leaves attractive lacing.

The aroma is of banana bread and raisins with sweet/sour doughy malt.

The taste is more raisin, and lighter banana bread, especially as the beer warms. Cloves rise in the middle with tart wheat

Light to moderate in body with light syrup and light carbonation., becoming drying in the end.

Tasty, smooth, and well rounded. A really good beer.

Poured 500ml into Weiss glass. A light mahogany brown with a 2.5 finger creamy tan foam head that fades into a thick cap. It has a light banana and plum aroma, with some caramel and roasted malt. Flavor is bready malts, wheat and barley with some fruity banana notes, light caramel in the middle, and finishes with some clove. Feel is full-bodied with a creamy feel and excellent carbonation, but has some grit. Enjoyed this one.

500ml Bottle
Binny's - Willowbrook, IL

Andechs' Weissbier Dunkel glugs into the mug a muddy, ruddy, ruby hued garnet. The ruby hues glow along the sides of the glass when backlit. The muddiness of the body make the beer nearly opaque. An off white, khaki crown of foam forms easily on the pour and is continually bolstered by the aggressive streams of carbonation running up the glass until the last drop. This is a fine looking bier.

The nose is richly wheaty and complexly estery & phenolic driven. Warm banana bread kicks things of and is as enticing as it gets. Fresh cracked wheat abounds with a little doughy character. Soft clove and brown sugar pop up here and there with the clove in just the right amounts, very little. Mild baking spices hug the periphery. A drizzle of caramel and a mild herbal quality round it all out.

The flavor profile picks up where the nose left off and may be even more well rounded. Soft clove starts it out before the banana bread joins the fun. Cracked wheat pops up in the middle along with a drizzle of caramel and that brown sugar note. It finishes with the banana fading, the clove stepping back up and being met with the soft baking spices, and an herbal hoppiness. An excellent beer with no edges.

The mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium with an ample carbonation that makes it feel lighter yet. You can tell there is some plush weight but it's also sped up with the bubbles. These attributes keep this beer an easy drinker. It dries out over a few seconds and leaves a little spiciness on the tongue. I could slam this stuff.

Andechs yet again hit the nail on the head. A beautifully rounded, even handed beverage. Every aspect is done well from the depth to the drinkability. I might have to keep a few of these handy from now on.

Pours a very deep brown, nearly opaque, billowing head with a tan hue with excellent retention. Beautiful looking beer.

Really not much aroma to this one, very light roasted malts and caramel, only a slight amount of banana and straw. Taste expands and gives off big banana, malt and caramel flavours. Notes of straw, raisin, light cacao, clove and toasted bread. Well balanced and tasty.

Finishes light-medium, smooth and clean. All the flavours rounding out well, delivering an easy drinking brew. Really close to being something great.

Nice dunkelweizen, a real classic example of the style even if it's not the best one. Nutty and estery, it's more similar in taste to a hefeweizen than some

Feel: It has a moderate body. The taste starts off sweet and is bitter in the finish.

Overall, this is a fruity dunkelweizen that has excellent balance and taste.

On tap at Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.

This one took a while to pour- but it was worth it. It looks very pretty. There's a large fluffy white head, sitting on top of a golden brown body. As the beer is drunk, huge swaths of lacing are left down the glass.

There's slight roast on the nose, a hint of chocolate-covered caramel, some clove and wheat, etc.

This is extremely well-crafted. It's got a wonderful malty creaminess to it, with caramel/clove/wheat/roast all in perfect harmony. One thing doesn't dominate the other- it's just well made all around.

This has a nice thick creaminess to it, with a good level of carbonation.

This is definitely one of the best German breweries we can get in America.
