Style: Dunkelweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This dark Weissbier retains its aromatic character thanks to the select choice of Hallertau aroma hops and highest quality Bavarian wheat and dark barley malts.

Its characteristic, distinctive maroon colour is a feast for the eyes. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. The perfect complement is provided by the very creamy, fine pored head. This dark Weissbier from the Holy Mountain will delight connoisseurs with a harmonious interplay of fruity odours, above all ripe bananas and pineapple, with undertones of caramel and cocoa.

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel teases the tongue with a delicate tanginess carried by a round, soft body. A light caramel sweetness harmonises well with the fine hoppy bitterness. It concludes on a soft and refreshing note.

Appearance - Pours cola brown with a frothy, near two-finger width off-white head. Good retention, resulting in a solid film of suds stretching across the surface. Decent lacing, with broken lines and spotting making up the bulk of it.

Smell - The nose is greeted with toffee/caramel, banana, clove and slight tartness.

Taste - A little darker than the nose would indicate. Caramel and slight toffee that is met with a faint, roasty malt flavor. Fair touch of banana and clove, but lacks ideal strength. Light tartness creeps into the finish.

Mouthfeel - Light-bodied with low carbonation. Slightly fluffy texture, going down incredibly easy, but leaving a bit to be desired. Lightly dry finish.

Overall - Not an especially impressive example of the style. A bit weak in flavor and body. Drinkable, but quickly forgettable.

The code L 1054 is printed on the bottle.

Appearance: Dark hazy brown body with a huge creamy light tan head.

Aroma: I get a slightly spicy aroma with a bit of what smells like toast and burnt caramel.

Taste: It has a rich caramel presence with a bit of a plum note (not strong) and a papery taste.

Mouthfeel: It feels rather watery and thin.

Overall: While it smells great and tastes pretty good, I would have to say that this is another beer that would probably taste much better if found fresh. I would not hesitate to buy it on tap or even a fresh bottle. From the slight spicy note and papery finish I'm picking up that this beer is fairly aged due to the oxidation. It's not a foreign flavor in imported beers but after having fresh dunkel it leaves much to be desired.

Appearance: Dark opaque brown with a large fluffy off white head.

Smell: Banana, oragne peel, and citrus, roasted malt.

Taste/Mouthfell: Mildy sweet with very low bitterness. The banana and citrus from the smell are precent in the taste, but are overpowered by a roasted malt flavor. There is also a faint caramel taste that just doesn't fit the style. The mouthfeel is medium thick and dry.

Drinkabliity: This is a decent beer, but I have had better Dunkel Weizens. I really expected more from Andechs.

Although not a fan of wheat beer, this is a very pleasant one. Smooth, creamy body with a bit of a sour aftertaste.

Cloudy brown colored beer with a medium sized dark brown colored head.

Smells strongly of cloves. Reasonable banana scents. Dark dried fruits scents, dates, prunes and figs. Spicy some cinnamon and ginger join the clove aroma.

Starts out semisweet and spicy. Peppery tastes like a Pfeffernüsse cookie. Chocolate and spices but the flavor isn't as intense as the smell.

Mouthfeel is full.

Overall a tasty Weissbier.

Very dark on initial pour. ummm, looks like a darker chocolate milk. same constiency. just much darker. lightly tan head, thich, foamy, and laces all the way down. Smells malty, lightly roasted.

Tastes great. Mixes all sorts of interwieving flavors. Chocolate, the a-typical wheat(dunkle) mix of banna, clove, and vanilla. with all these sweet flavors, this is not an overpowering sweetness. This fact is aided by the nice, lightly hopped finish. Well made brew, nothing overpwoering, nothing disspointed.

Props again to joe Rhodes

Dark brown and almost opaque. Impressive head with good retention and lace formation. Ripe banana hits first on the nose. More like banana bread actually. Floral hoppiness. Toffee malt profile. Not much depth of aroma but what's there is nice.

Light in flavor profile, malt-forward but well-balanced by bitterness. Banana and clove notes. Nice malty sweetness. Prickly carbonation that takes a while to settle down. Good flavor for only a 5% ABV beer. This is a solid, if unspectacular dark wheat.

This beer is deepbrown with some ruby hints, a big, creamy head with very fine bubbles.

Smell of banana with caramel and chocolate, not the best of combination I think, it was a bit vegetable also.

Taste was great without the vegetables and much better balanced. Ripe bananas with some exotic fruit with caramel and dark chocolate. There is also some powdery cocao in taste and mouthfeel, which is also slightly sweet and sticky. The yeast adds a nice phenolic taste and makes the mouthfeel a little coarse (?)

Tight, beige head that starts more than four fingers thick. Recedes very slowly leaving a foam dome and plenty of stringy lace on the glass. Deep brown liquid. Appears to be quite clear in front of a bright light.

Smells like chalky chocolate milk. Light alcohol in the background. I get notes of black cherry, raw bread dough and raisin.

Mild, darker malt taste of toast and raw grains. The swallow has a hop presence, but the stronger flavor is of the wheat. Brief sour aftertaste. Thin bodied with a sizable carbonation level.

Andechs appearently has a dark side with its wiezen and lager, and it's time to check out both. This dunkelweizen was served on-tap at Andechser am Dom in Munich. On to the beer:

This is brown with an orange hues and cloudiness. The head on top is solid as a rock, in terms of size and retention. The aroma is modest in intensity, but the notes of cinnamon and cider are to be expected per style. Taste....get some toasted grain, then apples, then comes a touch of cinnamon and brown sugar. Its carbonation is low to go with the medium body.

Pleasant dunkelweizen, however I lean towards the brighter weizen of this brand.

If I'm gonna drink a wheat beer, this is the one to have. The caramel and banana make it a pleasant change of pace. On tap at the Sunnyvale Beer Garden.

Dark brown color that only got cloudy with the final ounce in the glass even after aggressively swirling the bottle. A large head forms and slowly settles. Heavy lacing is left down the glass. Strong aroma of banana and bubblegum. Also a bit of medicinal astringency. Not much difference between this and the hefeweizen. Nice wheat and banana flavors with notes of bubblegum and cloves. Liked the carbonation that had a bit of zip to it that liven the body. Almost seems like this beer was old but I see no bottle date and this beer is new to this market so not sure.

It has been a long time since I have had a Dunkelweizen. I remember the style well and I am happy to see a new example of the style on the shelves of MA by a respected brewery like Andechs.

A- Poured from the 500ml bottle to two pint glasses with a almost crimson dark red body that only allows a small amount of light to pierce the edges. A foamy, white head forms on the beer to about two fingers. The cap lowers to a thick ring and a pillow remains over the whole top. Sticky sheets of lace coat a small portion of the glass.

S- Not the most pungent of aromas but what is there is intriguing and delicately balanced. Yeast produced esters and phenolics bring a nice blend of banana, apple, pear and clove hints. Toasted, caramel and wheat malt aromatics.

T- Malt and yeast influence of the aroma carries over nicely but one big change I notice is the appearance of a Candi-sugar-esque caramelized sugar feel. Fairly sweet overall but nicely done with the malt and fruit flavors present. Base of caramel, wheat crust, banana, pear, clove, general yeast spice and slight toasted grains.

MF- Light-medium bodied thickness with a slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is at a moderately low level but very silky (that wheat fluff) on the palate. Minimal bitterness as that caramelized sugar sweetness lingers.

Spicy, malty, fruity and sweet. The carbonation was just a bit low for my liking but it didn't detract enough from the delicate balance of flavor for me to deduct too much. Between Ayinger, Weihen and now Andechs, it seems like those 500ml German bottles are always a hit.
